A Kentucky road test appointment is scheduled online through the Kentucky State Police TeleGov portal at telegov.egov.com. The Kentucky State Police run all skills testing; the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet issues the license once you pass. Since July 2022 you can book at any regional testing office in the state, not just the one tied to your county, so if your closest office is booked out, look wider.
How to Book Through TeleGov
Go to telegov.egov.com/ksp/AppointmentWizard and choose “Driver License Road Test” from the appointment type list. Pick a regional testing location from the list published on the Kentucky State Police driver testing page, then use the calendar to select an open date and time. You’ll need your permit number, full legal name, and date of birth to finish the booking.
The system emails a confirmation once the appointment is set. Keep that email. It contains the link you’ll use to change or cancel the appointment later. If nothing arrives within a few minutes, check your spam folder or log back in to make sure the booking went through.
When You Can Schedule: Permit Holding Periods
Kentucky law requires you to hold your instructional permit for a set number of days before you’re eligible to test. The clock depends on how old you were when you got the permit, and there are no exceptions.1Justia Law. Kentucky Code 186.450 – Instruction Permit – Application – Age Requirements – Restrictions on Driving With Permit
- Under 18: at least 180 days with no moving violation. A conviction during that window resets the 180 days.
- 18 to 20, permit obtained before turning 18: at least 180 days, plus a driver training program.
- 18 to 20, permit obtained at 18 or older: at least 180 days.
- 21 and older: at least 30 days.
An instructional permit is valid for three years and can be renewed.
Extra Steps if You’re Under 18
Kentucky’s Graduated Driver Licensing Program adds requirements on top of the holding period. Before you can test, a parent or guardian must sign a form certifying you’ve completed at least 60 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 of those hours at night. The supervising driver must be at least 21 and hold a valid operator’s license.2Kentucky Legislative Research Commission. Kentucky Code 186.452 – Intermediate License to Operate a Motor Vehicle
Passing at this age doesn’t produce a full license. The examiner puts an “Intermediate License” sticker on your permit, and you enter a phase with a midnight-to-6 a.m. driving curfew (unless you can show good cause such as work, school, or an emergency) and a one-unrelated-passenger-under-20 rule. You’ll hold that intermediate license for another 180 days and complete a driver education course before applying for the full unrestricted license.3DRIVE. Graduated Driver Licensing Program
What to Bring on Test Day
A licensed driver at least 21 years old has to accompany you to the site. It doesn’t have to be a parent or guardian for the test itself; anyone 21 or older with a valid license qualifies.4Kentucky State Police. Kentucky State Police Driver Testing
Bring your original Kentucky instructional permit, current vehicle registration (temporary tags are fine as long as they match the vehicle and are still valid), and proof of liability insurance. Acceptable insurance proof is a card from your carrier, a current policy document, or a written binder from an insurance agent showing coverage is in force. If the car is a rental, bring the rental agreement, be listed as the renter, and make sure the agreement shows you’re insured for the vehicle.
Vehicle Safety Check
Before you leave the lot, the examiner inspects the car. The check covers brakes, headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, horn, driver-side windshield wiper, rearview mirror, muffler, steering, and seat belts. Non-working brake lights, non-working turn signals, or any passenger seat belt that doesn’t work will end the test before it starts. If you’re borrowing a car, walk it the day before with someone outside confirming every light and signal.
What the Examiner Scores
The road test runs through a specific set of maneuvers:
- Reverse two-point parking: driving past a space and backing into it, with attention to mirror use and how many corrections you need.
- Backing in a straight line: about 50 feet at low speed, looking over your right shoulder toward the rear.
- Quick stop: a controlled stop from around 20 mph on the examiner’s cue.
- Signaling and turning, both directions, from the correct lane, with the signal on for the last 200 feet before the turn.
- Right-of-way: yielding to pedestrians, pulling over for emergency vehicles, and staying out of intersections you’d block.
- Following distance of three to four seconds behind the vehicle ahead.
Throughout, the examiner watches whether you physically turn your head to check mirrors and blind spots. A glance isn’t enough. This is the single most common place applicants lose points.
Backup Cameras and Park Assist
Backup cameras are allowed, but you can’t use one as your primary view to the rear. The examiner expects a full 360-degree visual scan before you reverse and expects you to look out the rear window for the duration of any backing maneuver. Treat the camera as an extra mirror. Parallel park assist and self-parking features aren’t allowed at all; parking maneuvers have to be entirely your own work.4Kentucky State Police. Kentucky State Police Driver Testing
Rescheduling or Canceling
Open the link in your confirmation email. From that page you can change the location, change the date and time, or update your contact information, and you’ll get a fresh confirmation email once the changes are saved. You can also cancel from the same link.5TeleGovProd. Help – Appointment Scheduling Application Rescheduling ahead is better than a no-show, which may affect your ability to book again at busier locations.
If You Fail
You have to wait seven full days before scheduling a retake.3DRIVE. Graduated Driver Licensing Program Book the new appointment through the same TeleGov portal. The examiner should tell you which areas cost you the test, so spend the week on those specific maneuvers rather than running through everything again.
After You Pass
If you’re under 18, the examiner puts the intermediate license sticker on your permit and you enter the intermediate phase. After 180 days on that license plus a driver education course, you visit a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet regional driver licensing office for the full unrestricted license, and a parent or guardian must come with you to that appointment.3DRIVE. If you’re 18 or older and you’ve met the holding period and any training requirement, passing clears you to visit a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet regional office to have your full operator’s license issued. Bring valid proof of residency and be ready to pay the credential fee at the counter.
