To qualify in Florida, household income cannot exceed 150% of the federal poverty level or 60% of the state median income. For 2025 that came out to about $32,155 for a single person and $61,837 for a family of four.4FloridaJobs.org. The county also passes Human Services grant funds to local nonprofits that hand out short-term help with utility bills, rent, and food. Those grants have covered roughly 2,800 people and families.5Lake County Government. Community Services Division
Hardship Reimbursement for Solid Waste and Fire Fees
If you own your home with a homestead exemption and can’t easily pay the non-ad valorem assessments on your tax bill, the county’s Hardship Reimbursement Program will pay back up to 50% of the solid waste and fire assessment charges. To qualify, your total household monthly income has to stay at or below 100% of the federal poverty guideline, and your property taxes need to be current. Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8)
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federal subsidy where the housing authority pays part of your rent directly to your landlord. SHIP Programs

- Security and utility deposit assistance for people at risk of homelessness.
- Foreclosure prevention for income-eligible homeowners who are at least two months but no more than six months behind on their primary mortgage, and whose home isn’t already in active foreclosure.
- Owner-occupied home repair and replacement for extremely low- and low-income residents needing essential repairs.
- Down payment and closing cost help for first-time buyers who meet income limits.
Which SHIP program is accepting applications shifts throughout the year. Emergency Rental Assistance Has Ended
The federal Emergency Rental Assistance programs (ERA-1 and ERA-2) that many Lake County renters used during the pandemic are no longer available. Apply at Florida’s MyACCESS portal, myaccess.myflfamilies.com, where you can also apply for Medicaid and Temporary Cash Assistance in the same session.14MyACCESS. The Women, Infants, and Children program provides free healthy foods, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, and healthcare referrals for pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children under five who meet income and nutritional risk criteria. Cash Assistance for Families

How to Apply
The paperwork varies by program, but most applications ask for the same core documents. Pull these together before you start:
- The last 30 days of pay stubs, Social Security award letters, pension statements, or unemployment paperwork for every adult in the household.
- A government-issued photo ID for the applicant and Social Security cards for all household members.
- A current utility bill, lease, or mortgage statement showing your Lake County address.

If You Get Denied
A denial isn’t the end. Federal rules give SNAP applicants the right to request a fair hearing within 90 days of any adverse action, whether that’s a denial, a reduction, or termination of benefits.
