Las Vegas Traffic Ticket: Fines, Points & Response Deadlines

If you were cited in Las Vegas, your Las Vegas traffic ticket has a hard response deadline printed on it, and the smartest first move is figuring out which court holds the case so you can pay, contest, or ask for traffic school before that deadline runs. Miss it and the fines grow, a bench warrant becomes possible, and the DMV can suspend your license.

Find Out Which Court Has Your Case

Tickets written inside Las Vegas city limits go to Las Vegas Municipal Court. Tickets written in unincorporated Clark County or outside city boundaries go to Las Vegas Justice Court at the Regional Justice Center.¹ Henderson and North Las Vegas run their own municipal courts for stops inside their limits.

The court name and address are on the citation itself. If you’ve lost your copy, Justice Court has an online case lookup by name or case number, and Municipal Court has its own lookup. Filing a response with the wrong court does not count.

Civil Infraction or Criminal Violation

Nevada splits traffic offenses into two tracks, and everything about your deadline and your options depends on which one you’re on. Everyday moving violations — speeding under 30 mph over the limit, running a stop sign, failure to yield — are civil infractions. They carry a monetary penalty and DMV demerit points, no jail. Criminal traffic violations include reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, driving without insurance, and speeding 30 mph or more over the posted limit. These require a mandatory court appearance and can carry fines, community service, or jail.²

Your citation tells you which category applies. Check it before you do anything else.

How Long You Have to Respond

For civil infractions at Las Vegas Justice Court, you have 90 calendar days from the date the citation appears in the court’s online system to resolve it.¹ The clock runs whether or not you’ve checked. For criminal traffic violations, there is no 90-day cushion; you must appear on the specific date printed on the ticket.

Municipal Court citations run to the date on the ticket. Whichever court you’re in, a specific court date on the citation is the hard deadline.³

What Happens If You Miss It

Nevada gives you at least a 30-day grace period after a missed court date or missed payment before a court can issue a bench warrant. That grace period does not apply to reckless driving, DUI, or vehicular manslaughter, which can trigger a warrant immediately.⁴ After the grace period runs out, the judge can order your arrest.

The costs stack fast. A bench warrant adds $110 to what you already owe. Thirty days after a failure to appear, a $100 collection fee is added and the debt goes to a collection agency. The court also notifies the DMV, which can suspend your license.⁵ Reinstating a suspended license costs $75.⁶

Going to the court’s traffic office to clear an old warrant generally won’t get you arrested on the spot, but the warrant stays active until the court formally resolves it. Any other police contact in the meantime can land you in custody.⁵

Ways to Respond

You have three real choices on a civil infraction: pay, contest, or ask for traffic school. On a criminal violation, you have to show up on your court date.

Paying Online, By Mail, or In Person

The fastest option for a Justice Court civil infraction is the online payment portal, where you can look up your case, review the amount, and pay by credit card. Municipal Court also takes online guilty or no-contest pleas with payment.³ Save the digital confirmation. You can also pay at the clerk’s office listed on the citation, or mail the response form and a photocopy of the citation by certified mail so you have a postmark. You’ll need your citation number (top right of the ticket) and your driver’s license number.

Just paying resolves the case, but it counts as a conviction, and the court reports it to the DMV for demerit points.¹

Contesting the Ticket

To fight a civil infraction at Justice Court, you go to the Customer Service Division on the first floor of the Regional Justice Center in person and file a Civil Infraction Response form. You post a bond of either $150 or the full penalty, whichever is less. The court then sets a contested hearing, and the bond is refunded if you win.¹ For a criminal violation, a not-guilty plea leads to arraignment and a trial date.

Traffic School

Traffic school is usually the smartest play on a routine moving violation. At Las Vegas Justice Court, if the citation is your first in the past 36 months, you can have a moving violation reduced to a non-moving violation (illegal parking, zero demerit points) by finishing a DMV-approved 5-hour traffic safety course. Violations carrying five or more points require a longer Level 2 course.¹ You still pay the fine, but you avoid the points and the insurance hike that follows them.

Separately, the DMV lets you knock three demerit points off an existing record by completing an approved course, but only if you currently sit between three and 11 points and the course isn’t part of a plea bargain. You can do one voluntary reduction course per 12-month period, and many providers offer it online.⁷⁸

These are two different tools. The court reduction changes what the conviction is; the DMV reduction trims points from a record you already have. Depending on your history, you may qualify for one but not the other.

Points and License Suspension

The Nevada DMV logs every moving violation conviction on a scale of one to eight points depending on severity.⁸ Common assignments:

1 to 10 mph over the limit: 1 point
11 to 20 mph over: 2 points
21 to 30 mph over: 3 points
31 to 40 mph over: 4 points
41+ mph over: 5 points
Running a red light or stop sign: 4 points
Failure to yield: 4 points
Following too closely: 4 points
Careless driving: 6 points
Reckless driving: 8 points

Points fall off 12 months after the conviction date, not the date of the stop. Accumulate 12 or more points inside any 12-month window and your license is automatically suspended for six months.⁸ That suspension is a DMV action separate from anything the court orders, and reinstatement costs $75.

Speeding Fines

Nevada caps the fine at $20 per mile per hour over the posted limit, so 15 mph over could mean a fine up to $300 before court fees and administrative assessments, which are added on top.⁹ At 30 mph or more over, speeding becomes a criminal misdemeanor with a mandatory court appearance.

Nevada law also creates a legal presumption in favor of reducing a speeding violation from a moving to a non-moving offense if you pay the full fine and fees before your first required appearance. A judge can override that presumption if your record shows a pattern.⁹ Paying early can genuinely change the outcome, not just clear the case.

What the Ticket Costs Your Insurance

The fine is often the smaller number. According to the Insurance Information Institute, auto premiums rise an average of 20% for three years after a single speeding ticket. On a $2,000 annual premium, that’s an extra $1,200 across three renewal cycles. Serious violations like reckless driving trigger larger increases, and some insurers won’t renew at all. Insurers look at your DMV record, and a non-moving parking violation doesn’t move the needle the way a speeding conviction does. That’s the practical reason traffic school and the moving-to-non-moving reduction matter so much.

If You’re From Out of State

Flying home doesn’t make the ticket go away. Nevada belongs to the Driver License Compact, an agreement among 45 states and the District of Columbia to share conviction data. A moving violation conviction in Nevada goes to your home state’s licensing agency, which treats it as if it happened there.¹⁰ Ignoring the ticket is worse: the National Driver Register tracks license suspensions and serious offenses across state lines,¹¹ and a Nevada suspension for failure to appear can keep your home state from renewing your license until you clear it. The compact does not cover non-moving violations like parking tickets.

If You Hold a CDL

Commercial license holders face a separate layer under federal rules. The FMCSA treats certain offenses as “serious traffic violations” that can disqualify a CDL even when committed in a personal vehicle, including speeding 15 mph or more over the limit, reckless driving, improper lane changes, following too closely, and any violation tied to a fatal crash.¹² Two serious violations within three years bring a 60-day CDL disqualification; three within three years bring 120 days.¹³ For a working driver, a routine speeding ticket can become a career problem, which is exactly the case where getting the citation reduced to a non-moving violation is worth the effort.
