The Lawrence County, Ohio sales tax rate is 7.25 percent on most retail purchases. That combines Ohio’s 5.75 percent state sales tax with a 1.5 percent county levy, and it applies countywide across every municipality and unincorporated area.1Ohio Department of Taxation. County Rate Table by ZIP Code June 2026
How the Rate Is Built
Ohio’s statewide sales tax of 5.75 percent is set by Ohio Revised Code Section 5739.02.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 5739.02 – Levy of Sales Tax – Purpose – Rate – Exemptions Section 5739.021 lets counties add up to 1.5 percent of their own to fund general operations, criminal justice, or regional transportation.3Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 5739.021 – Additional Sales Tax Levied by County Lawrence County takes the full 1.5 percent, which is why the combined rate hits 7.25 percent.
Across Ohio, county rates range from zero in counties with no local levy up to 2.25 percent where a transit authority tax stacks on top. Lawrence County sits mid-pack.
What the 7.25 Percent Applies To
The rate applies to the retail sale, lease, and rental of tangible personal property: electronics, clothing, furniture, motor vehicles, and other physical items.4Ohio Department of Taxation. Sales and Use Tax Ohio also taxes a wide list of services, which is where buyers are most often surprised. Taxable services commonly billed in the county include:
- Repair and maintenance of personal property, pest control, car detailing, and warranty agreements
- Landscaping, snow removal, and building cleaning or janitorial work, taxable once the provider earns $5,000 or more annually from those services
- Laundry and dry cleaning, except coin-operated machines
- Private investigation and security
- Streaming subscriptions, satellite TV, certain telecom services, and data processing
- Gym memberships, massages, tattoos, and tanning
- Hotel and short-term rental stays under 30 days at facilities with five or more rooms
The $5,000 revenue threshold catches small operators out. A neighbor cutting your grass for cash owes nothing. A professional landscaping company billing above that line must add 7.25 percent to every invoice.5Ohio Department of Taxation. Sales and Use Taxability
What’s Exempt
Section 5739.02(B) carves out several categories that matter to most households:
- Unprepared food taken home from the grocery store. Sodas, alcoholic beverages, and dietary supplements don’t qualify and stay taxable.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 5739.02 – Levy of Sales Tax – Purpose – Rate – Exemptions
- Prescription medications dispensed by a licensed pharmacist.
- Prosthetic devices, durable medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, and similar items prescribed for medical use.
Businesses and nonprofits buying for resale or for an exempt purpose can hand the seller a completed Ohio Blanket Exemption Certificate (Form STEC B), which the seller keeps on file.6Ohio Department of Taxation. Sales and Use Tax Individuals report it by opening a Consumer’s Use Tax Account with the Ohio Department of Taxation using Form UT 1008, which costs nothing, and filing through the OH|TAX eServices portal monthly or quarterly.
In practice, most major online retailers now collect Ohio tax automatically under the state’s economic nexus rules. The obligation still shows up for purchases from smaller out-of-state vendors and for private cross-state sales.
Ohio Sales Tax Holiday
Ohio holds a back-to-school sales tax holiday on the first weekend of August each year. In 2026, it runs Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9. During the window, these items are fully exempt from state and county sales tax:
- Clothing priced at $75 or less per item
- School supplies priced at $20 or less per item
- School instructional materials priced at $20 or less per item
The thresholds are strict. A $74 jacket is tax-free; a $76 jacket pays the full 7.25 percent.7Ohio Department of Taxation. Ohio Sales Tax Holiday 2026
