Leavenworth Jail in Kansas: FCI, Other Facilities, and Visits

When people say “Leavenworth Jail” in Kansas, they almost always mean FCI Leavenworth, the medium-security federal prison at 1300 Metropolitan Avenue in Leavenworth, about 25 miles northwest of Kansas City. The city itself hosts several separate correctional facilities, though, including two military prisons on Fort Leavenworth, a county jail, and a privately operated detention center. Which one you need depends on who you’re trying to find.

FCI Leavenworth

The Federal Correctional Institution at 1300 Metropolitan Avenue, Leavenworth, KS 66048, is run by the Bureau of Prisons and classified as medium-security for male offenders. An adjacent minimum-security satellite camp sits on the same grounds and houses lower-risk inmates, while the main facility holds general-population prisoners and pretrial detainees.1Federal Bureau of Prisons. This is where the confusion about security level comes from. For most of its history, the facility operated as the United States Penitentiary (USP) Leavenworth, a maximum-security prison with a reputation as one of the toughest in the federal system. The Bureau of Prisons downgraded it to medium-security in 2005 and renamed it FCI Leavenworth. The old name and the old reputation still travel with it.

The Other “Leavenworth” Facilities

Four other facilities in the area get grouped under the Leavenworth name. They’re separately run and hold different populations, so make sure you have the right one before you drive out or send mail.

Visiting an Inmate at FCI Leavenworth

You can’t just show up. Every visitor has to be on the inmate’s approved visiting list first, which allows up to 20 people total, with no more than 10 of those being friends rather than family. Friends have to show they had a relationship with the inmate before incarceration.7Federal Bureau of Prisons. USP Leavenworth Visiting Regulations

Visitors can be denied for incomplete paperwork, failure to prove a prior relationship, inability to get authorization from a probation or parole board if they have a criminal record, or posing a security threat. No more than five visitors can see an inmate at one time.7Federal Bureau of Prisons. USP Leavenworth Visiting Regulations

Visiting hours at the main institution run 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The satellite camp is open Saturday, Sunday, and Monday during the same hours. Weekends are assigned on an alternating schedule based on the inmate’s register number, so not every inmate can receive visitors on the same weekend. Federal holidays that fall on a weekday are generally open to all visitors.7Federal Bureau of Prisons. USP Leavenworth Visiting Regulations

Why the Name Carries So Much Weight

Leavenworth was one of the first three federal penitentiaries authorized by the Three Prisons Act of 1891, and for decades it was the largest maximum-security federal prison in the country.8Federal Bureau of Prisons. Historical Information The massive stone walls and the roster of notorious inmates it housed over the years built a reputation that outlasted its 2005 reclassification. If you grew up hearing “Leavenworth” as shorthand for serious federal time, that’s why. The facility operating under that name today is a medium-security institution.
