A legal name change in Michigan after marriage runs on a fixed order: get certified copies of your marriage certificate, update Social Security, then update your Michigan driver’s license, and only then work through everything else. Order Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate
Everything downstream depends on this document. A certified copy is the legal proof that authorizes each agency and institution to change your name in its records. You can request certified copies from the county clerk where your marriage license was issued, or order them from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Order at least two or three. Several agencies want an original in hand, and some hold onto it for a stretch before returning it, so having multiple copies keeps the process moving in parallel where possible.
One boundary to note. Michigan’s marriage license does not include a space to designate a new name at the ceremony. The name change happens entirely through the document-update process below, not on the marriage license itself.
Update Social Security First
The Social Security Administration comes first because every other agency will eventually check its records against SSA. If the names don’t match, things stall.
Depending on your situation, you may be able to make the change online through your my Social Security account at ssa.gov.2Social Security Administration. Change Name with Social Security If the online path isn’t available to you, complete the paper Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) and bring it to your local SSA office along with your certified marriage certificate and a valid photo ID such as a driver’s license or U.S. passport.3Social Security Administration. You don’t need the physical card in hand to move to the next step; you need the SSA database to reflect the change, which usually happens within a day or two of processing.
Update Your Michigan Driver’s License or State ID
Once SSA reflects your new name, visit a Michigan Secretary of State office. Bring:
- Your current license or ID
- Proof of the SSA name change (your new Social Security card or a verification letter from SSA)
- Your certified marriage certificate showing the change from your previous legal name to your current one
If your name has changed more than once over the years, you may need documents creating a paper trail from your birth name to your current one, particularly if you’re applying for a REAL ID credential at the same time.4Michigan Department of State. License or ID Name Correction
A corrected standard driver’s license is $9 and a corrected standard state ID is $10. While you’re there, you can also correct your vehicle title. Bring your valid license or ID, the title, your registration or plate number, and proof of the legal name change if it isn’t already on the license. Update Your U.S. Passport
The passport process depends on how recently it was issued.
If your passport was issued less than one year ago and your legal name change also happened within that same year, submit Form DS-5504 by mail with the current passport, your certified marriage certificate, and a new passport photo. If more than a year has passed since either the passport was issued or your name changed, you need to renew. That’s Form DS-82 by mail if you’re eligible, or Form DS-11 in person otherwise. Financial Accounts, Taxes, and Credit
The IRS matches the name on your tax return against SSA records. A mismatch can delay processing or hold up a refund, so make sure the SSA change is done well before you file.8Internal Revenue Service. Contact your banks, credit card issuers, and investment or retirement account providers. Each has its own process, but most want a certified marriage certificate and an updated government-issued ID. Leaving accounts on your prior name can create problems with access and transaction approvals.

Employer, Benefits, and Professional Licenses
Give your employer your updated Social Security card so payroll and tax-withholding records match. Separately, contact any benefits providers tied to your employment: health, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement accounts, and flexible spending accounts. Health insurers in particular need current information so claims aren’t denied over a name discrepancy.
Professional licensees should notify the relevant board. Attorneys, for example, submit a name-change request to the State Bar of Michigan with supporting documentation such as a copy of the marriage certificate.10State Bar of Michigan. Travel, Property, and Estate Planning
The name on any airline reservation has to match the name on the government-issued ID you’ll show at TSA.11Transportation Security Administration. During the transition, when some IDs still show your old name, book flights using whichever name matches the ID you plan to bring. Update frequent flyer accounts and travel profiles so they don’t auto-fill the wrong name.
If you have TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, contact the enrollment provider you originally used. Estate planning documents reference you by name. Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives are not automatically invalidated by a name change, but outdated names can create confusion during probate or a medical emergency. Update them, or add a codicil or amendment reflecting the change. Do the same for property deeds and insurance policies. Old names on property records can create ambiguity about ownership when you later sell or refinance; your title company or county register of deeds can walk you through the process for real property.
