A Lewis County burn ban can be in effect countywide, on specific forestlands, or as an air-quality restriction, and the answer to whether you can burn today depends on where your property sits and which of three agencies has posted a restriction. Outdoor burning is permanently prohibited inside several city and urban growth areas year-round. Everywhere else in the county, burning is allowed with a permit only when the county, the Washington Department of Natural Resources, and the Southwest Clean Air Agency all allow it. The strictest rule always controls.
How to Check Today’s Burn Status
Never assume yesterday’s status still applies. Conditions change quickly, and a morning that starts open can be closed by afternoon. Lewis County requires permit holders to verify status every day they plan to light a fire.1Lewis County Burn Permits. Lewis County Burn Permit

Where Burning Is Permanently Banned
If your property is inside the city limits or urban growth area of Centralia, Chehalis, Morton, Mossyrock, Napavine, Pe Ell, Toledo, Vader, or Winlock, outdoor burning is prohibited year-round with no exceptions for yard debris or land clearing.3Lewis County Washington. A rural mailing address does not automatically put you outside an urban growth boundary. Check the burn area maps on the county permit site before you plan a fire.
Seasonal and Temporary Bans
Outside the urban growth areas, outdoor burning is allowed with a permit, but three separate agencies can shut it down.
Under Lewis County Code Title 15, the county Building Official acts as the local fire code official and can order all open burning stopped when conditions become hazardous. These restrictions usually appear in summer and early fall when vegetation dries out. A partial ban may halt land-clearing and larger debris fires while still allowing small recreational fires. A total ban shuts down all outdoor burning, campfires included. The Building Official and the Code Compliance Officer can also order any individual fire extinguished if smoke is affecting neighbors or creating a safety hazard.5Lewis County, Washington. The Washington Department of Natural Resources imposes its own burn restrictions during fire season, and a DNR restriction covers state, county, city, and private land under DNR fire protection.6Washington Department of Natural Resources. Outdoor Burning If you live on or near forested land, a DNR ban applies even when the county has not called one.
The Southwest Clean Air Agency enforces SWCAA Regulation 425, which mirrors WAC 173-425 locally, and can call air-quality burn bans independent of fire danger when smoke and stagnant air make the air unhealthy.7Southwest Clean Air Agency. SWCAA 425 Outdoor Burning
What You Can and Cannot Burn
Even when burning is allowed, only natural vegetation is legal fuel: tree limbs, brush, leaves, and similar yard waste. The following materials are always illegal to burn, ban or no ban:
- Garbage and household trash, including food waste and packaging3Lewis County Washington. Burn Permits – Lewis County Washington – Permit Application
- Plastics and rubber products
- Treated or painted wood, including construction or demolition lumber
- Petroleum products, asphalt, and paint
- Cardboard and paper beyond the small amount needed to start the fire
- Metal and dead animals
If it is not natural vegetation, do not burn it.8Washington State Legislature. WAC 173-425-050 General Standards and Requirements Burning prohibited materials can bring penalties even with a valid permit.
Small campfires using dry, seasoned firewood do not need a permit as long as the fuel area stays within three feet across and two feet high.7Southwest Clean Air Agency. SWCAA 425 Outdoor Burning Anything larger needs a permit, and even small recreational fires are prohibited during a total ban. Smoke from any fire cannot drift into neighboring properties in a way that affects them.9Washington State Department of Ecology. Outdoor and Residential Burning
Getting a Burn Permit

The permit binds you to several obligations. You must check the county burn status every day you plan to burn. You must stay with the fire until it is completely out. The Building Official, Code Compliance Officer, your fire district, and the Sheriff’s Office can enter your property to inspect for compliance with permit conditions.1Lewis County Burn Permits. Penalties and Cost Exposure
Burning without a permit or during an active ban can bring civil fines, criminal charges, or both. The Lewis County burn permit warns that noncompliance leads to civil enforcement through citations and fines, or to criminal action.1Lewis County Burn Permits. The exposure grows sharply if a fire escapes. Under the permit, you are personally responsible for damage or injury your fire causes, and the responding fire authority can bill you for the full cost of suppression.1Lewis County Burn Permits. Washington Revised Code 76.04.660 – Additional Fire Hazard Reduction Crews, aircraft, and specialized equipment can push those costs into tens of thousands of dollars.
