A driver’s license renewal in Philadelphia goes through PennDOT, and you have three options: online, by mail, or in person at a driver license center. The Three Ways to Renew
Online
The online portal is the fastest route. Enter your license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number, confirm your information, and pay by credit or debit card. You’ll get a printed receipt that acts as a temporary driving document. By Mail
Complete the DL-143, sign it in ink, and mail it to the Harrisburg address on the form with a check or money order made out to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Once PennDOT processes it, a camera card arrives by mail with instructions to visit a photo center.
In Person
Bring your completed DL-143 to a full-service driver license center in Philadelphia. A staff member processes the application on the spot, and you can pay by credit card, debit card, check, or money order. If the center is also a photo license center, you can have your picture taken during the same visit.
What You’ll Need
For a straightforward renewal with no changes to your name or address, the DL-143 asks for your driver’s license number, Social Security number, date of birth, current address, height, and eye color, plus questions about any other state licenses or pending violations. Renewing With a REAL ID
As of May 7, 2025, boarding a domestic flight or entering certain federal buildings requires a REAL ID-compliant license or another federally accepted document like a passport. Upgrading to REAL ID during renewal has to be done in person, and you’ll need to bring:
- Proof of identity and lawful status: an original birth certificate with a raised seal from a government agency (not a hospital), or a valid unexpired U.S. passport.
- Social Security verification: your Social Security card, a W-2, or an SSA-1099 showing all nine digits, with a name matching your identity document.
- Two proofs of Pennsylvania residency: for example a utility bill, vehicle registration, auto insurance card, lease, mortgage document, or pay stub with your name and address.

If Your License Has Already Expired
Pennsylvania has no grace period. Driving on an expired license is a summary offense under Title 75, Section 1501, with a $200 fine. If you had a valid license during the previous renewal period and it has been expired for a year or less, the fine drops to $25. You can avoid a conviction altogether by producing a valid license, or proof of licensure if the card was lost or destroyed, at a PennDOT office within 15 days of the violation.8Pennsylvania General Assembly. Wait too long and the consequences grow. If your license has been expired for more than two years, PennDOT will require you to retake both the written knowledge test and the driving skills exam before issuing a new one. That puts you back at the learner’s permit stage, so a stalled renewal can end up costing far more time than the renewal itself.

Change of Address

Veteran Designation
Veterans with an honorable or general discharge can add a veteran designation at no extra charge, using a DD-214 or equivalent. For non-commercial licenses, it can be added through the online driver services portal, and once added it carries forward on future renewals. Gender Designation
Pennsylvania offers male, female, or non-binary (“X”) markers. Changing the marker requires Form DL-32 completed in person at a driver license center. No medical documentation is required. Medical Questions on the Form
The DL-143 asks about changes in your medical status. Pennsylvania law requires healthcare providers to report any patient 15 or older with a condition that could impair safe driving.14Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Medical Reporting If PennDOT receives a report or you self-report, the agency may require a medical evaluation before approving the renewal. Answer honestly. A provider’s report can reach PennDOT independently, and the consequences of driving with an undisclosed condition are more serious than a delayed renewal.
Where to Go in Philadelphia
Philadelphia has several PennDOT facilities, and not every one handles every transaction. Full-service driver license centers can process renewals, REAL ID applications, and license restorations. Photo license centers are narrower: you visit them after receiving your camera card to have your picture taken and pick up the new card.
