Little Rock Drivers Test: Road, Written, and Vision Steps

The Little Rock driver’s test is given by the Arkansas State Police and has three parts: a vision screening, a written knowledge exam, and a behind-the-wheel road test. The main testing site for Little Rock is Troop A headquarters at One State Police Plaza Drive.¹ You schedule both the knowledge and skills portions through the Arkansas State Police online scheduling portal on the Department of Public Safety website.² Show up at least 15 minutes early with your paperwork, a licensed companion, and a vehicle that will pass inspection.

What to Bring

If you have never held a license in any state, Arkansas law requires you to have a valid instruction permit on you before the road test.³ You also need a licensed driver age 21 or older to come with you to the site, and that person has to hand the examiner a valid, unexpired license.⁴ Driving yourself to the test without that person in the car is an automatic failure.

For identity, bring proof of legal presence (a U.S. birth certificate or passport works) and your Social Security card. Residency takes two supporting documents, which can be a utility bill, bank statement, paycheck stub, tax return, or insurance policy.⁵

Vehicle Requirements

You supply your own vehicle, and the examiner will inspect it before anything else happens. Arkansas law requires every vehicle on the road to be in safe mechanical condition, and the examiner applies that standard strictly.⁶ Your test does not start if any of these fail:

Headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals all working
Windshield clean, with no crack blocking the driver’s view
Horn and speedometer functional
Tires not badly worn, with no temporary spare (donut) in use
Muffler and exhaust system operating properly
Window tint no darker than 25% on front sides, 10% on rear windows, none on the windshield
Current proof of liability insurance (paper or electronic) and a valid registration in hand

Examiners will also refuse the test for serious mechanical defects like bad brakes, an excessively dirty interior, or a driver who appears unfamiliar with the controls.⁴ That last one matters. If you are borrowing a car, spend real time with the pedals, mirrors, and signal stalks first.

Vision Screening

Every applicant passes an eyesight test before licensing. An unrestricted license requires uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/40. If you fall short uncorrected but reach at least 20/70 with glasses or contacts, you qualify for a restricted license that requires you to wear them while driving.³

Field of vision has to be at least 140 degrees with both eyes, or 105 degrees with a single functional eye. If you cannot meet the standards during the screening, the examiner gives you a Vision Referral Form to take to an eye care professional.³

The Written Knowledge Test

The written exam is multiple choice and costs $5 per attempt.⁷ It draws directly from the Arkansas Driver License Study Guide and covers Arkansas-specific rules (seat belts, child passenger law, move-over law, school bus rules), traffic control devices, general driving mechanics, safe-driving practices, and impaired driving. What the Road Test Covers

The skills test evaluates you in controlled maneuvers and in live traffic. Expect parallel parking, where you have to fit the car within a marked space without hitting the curb or the boundary markers. Backing in a straight line for a set distance is also on the test, and it catches people who haven’t practiced it.

Out in traffic, examiners score everyday driving: yielding at intersections and crosswalks, obeying posted speed limits and traffic signals, and making smooth lane changes. Arkansas law requires turn signals to run continuously for at least the last 100 feet before a turn or lane change, and examiners watch for it.⁸ Mirror and blind-spot checks, following distance, and hand position all factor in.

Automatic Failures and the 30-Day Rule

Certain actions end the test instantly and trigger a mandatory 30-day wait before you can retest. These are not judgment calls:

Passing a stopped school bus with lights flashing
Failing to yield to an emergency vehicle using flashing lights
Improperly passing a stopped law enforcement vehicle on the highway with lights flashing
Parking in a handicapped space
Driving to the testing site without a licensed driver in the vehicle
Using a cell phone while operating the vehicle
Causing an at-fault accident

Any of these puts you 30 days out from the date of the failed test, and you can return on the 31st day.⁹ Beyond the automatic offenses, an examiner can still fail you for accumulating too many minor errors like rolling stops, lane drift, or missed mirror checks.

Weather Cancellations

Rain by itself does not cancel your test. The Arkansas State Police will run the skills exam in rainy conditions. Severe thunderstorms, fog, sleet, or snow will get it postponed. If weather cancels your test, your instruction permit cannot be extended for any reason, so do not wait until the final weeks of your permit to schedule.¹⁰

If You Fail

Failing for general scoring reasons also carries the 30-day waiting period, counted from the failed attempt, with retesting available on the 31st day.¹⁰ An applicant with good cause can request a waiver of the wait through the Office of Driver Services.¹¹

Ask the examiner where you lost points. If parallel parking or backing was the problem, an empty parking lot with cones fixes it faster than road practice does. If traffic navigation was the issue, drive different parts of Little Rock with your licensed companion until the habits are automatic.

Fees After You Pass

Once you pass, you go to a Department of Finance and Administration revenue office to receive the license. The fee depends on age and class:

Class D or Class M, age 18 and older: $24 for eight years
Intermediate Class D or M, ages 16–17: $12 for up to two years
Learner’s license, ages 14–15: $12 for up to two years

Applicants 70 and older with an expired license can pick either a four-year license for $12 or an eight-year license for $24. The $5 written exam fee is separate and applies to every attempt at the knowledge test.⁷

Extra Rules for Drivers Under 18

Arkansas runs a three-stage graduated licensing system, and drivers under 18 face restrictions adult applicants do not.

Learner’s License, Ages 14–15

A learner’s license allows supervised driving only, with a licensed adult age 21 or older in the front passenger seat, and every passenger in seatbelts. No unsupervised driving at any time.¹²

Intermediate License, Ages 16–17

At 16, a driver holding an instruction permit or learner’s license can apply for an intermediate license if they have been free of serious accidents and serious traffic violations for the previous six months.¹³ The restrictions:

No more than one unrelated minor passenger unless a licensed driver age 21 or older is in the front seat. Siblings, stepsiblings, and children in the same household don’t count.
No driving between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. unless traveling to or from school, church, or work, or in an emergency.
No use of a cell phone or wireless device while driving, except in emergencies.
Every passenger in a seatbelt at all times.

These stay in place until the driver turns 18 and qualifies for an unrestricted Class D license, which requires being free of serious accidents and traffic convictions for the previous 12 months.³
