Los Osos Sales Tax Rate: Use Tax, Nearby Cities, and Rate Changes

The Los Osos sales tax rate is 7.25%, which matches California’s statewide minimum and is among the lowest rates in San Luis Obispo County. Because Los Osos is unincorporated and no county district tax currently applies, there’s nothing added on top of the state floor.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. What You Pay the Tax On

The 7.25% applies to most physical goods sold at retail: electronics, furniture, clothing, appliances, building materials, and the like. It also applies to prepared food, meaning restaurant meals, hot deli items, and anything sold ready to eat.

Several everyday categories are exempt. Groceries bought for home consumption carry no sales tax, so raw ingredients, packaged snacks, and canned goods ring up tax-free at the grocery store. The exemption ends the moment food is sold in ready-to-eat form; hot prepared meals, restaurant orders, deli items for on-site consumption, and vending machine food are all fully taxable.2California Legislative Information. Prescription medicine and certain medical devices are also exempt. Over-the-counter supplements and vitamins are not.3California Tax Service Center. What Is Taxable?

Most professional services are not subject to sales tax in California. Hiring a plumber, accountant, or attorney doesn’t trigger the tax. When a service involves delivering a physical product, though, the product portion is generally taxable. A landscaper’s labor might not be taxed, but the plants and materials they install usually are.

Online Orders and Use Tax

If an online retailer collects California tax at checkout, you’ve already paid. When an out-of-state seller ships a physical item to Los Osos without collecting the tax, you owe California “use tax” at the same 7.25% rate.4California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Most large online retailers now collect automatically. Since October 2019, California law has treated marketplace facilitators like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy as the seller for tax purposes, making the platform responsible for collecting and remitting on behalf of third-party sellers.5California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Use tax still catches people on private-party purchases, items from small foreign sellers, and goods bought while traveling out of state and carried home. How Los Osos Compares to Nearby Cities

Many incorporated cities in San Luis Obispo County have passed local measures adding 0.50% to 1.50% on top of the state base. Los Osos has no city government to put such a measure on a ballot, so the base rate stands.7California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. The difference shows up at the register. Morro Bay’s combined rate is 8.750%, and the city of San Luis Obispo added a 1.5% local revenue measure on top of the base.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. On an appliance or a piece of furniture, that gap is one reason some county residents make a point of shopping in unincorporated areas.

Could the Rate Go Up?

The San Luis Obispo County board of supervisors has legal authority to impose a transaction and use tax on unincorporated areas, but no such countywide measure currently applies.7California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. District tax rates across California range from 0.10% to 2.00% where they exist, so any future measure could narrow or close the gap with nearby cities.8California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.
