What You Need to Order a Replacement
The requirements depend on which route you take.
Online
To replace your license or ID online, you need your driver’s license or ID number, and your license must be in active status with a photo on file no more than five years old.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. In Person

How to Place the Order
The fastest option is the NCDMV’s MyDMV portal at edmv.ncdot.gov.5North Carolina Department of Transportation. If your records are current and your photo is recent enough, the whole process takes a few minutes.

For an in-person visit, schedule an appointment through skiptheline.ncdot.gov to avoid long waits.6NCDMV Online Appointment Scheduler. NCDMV Driver Service Appointment Scheduler You’ll get a text or email confirmation. At the office, staff verify your documents, process the request, and collect the fee. You’ll receive a confirmation number to track your replacement.
Who Cannot Replace Online
The NCDMV blocks online replacement in several situations:
- Your license is suspended or you have outstanding NCDMV debt.
- You hold a commercial license with a P or S endorsement.
- Your record has legal presence documents on file, such as a Permanent Resident Card or Employment Authorization Document.
- You want to upgrade a standard license to a REAL ID.

What the Temporary Paper Receipt Won’t Do
The paper receipt is proof of a valid license or ID while you wait, but it has limits. The TSA does not accept temporary paper driver’s licenses at airport security checkpoints.7Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have a flight before the permanent card arrives, use a valid passport or another federally accepted ID. Banks and other businesses that require photo ID may also decline the receipt. If the permanent card hasn’t arrived within 20 business days, contact NCDMV customer service to check the status.
Whether to Upgrade to REAL ID
Federal REAL ID enforcement began in May 2025. You now need a REAL ID-compliant license, a passport, or another approved federal document to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.8Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A standard replacement license will not work at TSA checkpoints even after the permanent card arrives.
If your lost card was already a REAL ID, the duplicate you order online will also be a REAL ID. If your lost card was a standard license and you want to upgrade, you cannot do it online. That takes an in-person visit with proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport), your Social Security card, and two documents proving your current North Carolina address.4North Carolina Department of Transportation. Driving Without Your License While You Wait
North Carolina law requires you to carry your license while driving.9North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes 20-7 If you’re stopped without one, failing to have a valid license on your person is an infraction, less serious than a misdemeanor but still subject to potential fines.10North Carolina General Assembly. There is a defense built into the statute. If you produce in court a valid license that was current at the time of the stop, you cannot be found responsible for the infraction.10North Carolina General Assembly. The temporary paper receipt may help you explain the situation to an officer, but under the statute it is not a substitute for the license itself. Order the replacement immediately, and keep the receipt with you until the hard card arrives.
Protecting Yourself from Identity Theft
A lost ID card carries your full legal name, date of birth, address, and often enough information for someone to open accounts in your name. The NCDMV does not require a police report to issue a duplicate, but filing one with local law enforcement creates a dated record that helps if fraud surfaces later. North Carolina’s identity theft statute makes it a felony to use another person’s identifying information to make financial transactions, obtain anything of value, or evade legal consequences.11North Carolina General Assembly.
