Louisiana Concealed Carry Reciprocity Map & Gun Laws

Louisiana concealed carry reciprocity extends to 37 states that recognize the Louisiana Concealed Handgun Permit, while 11 states and the District of Columbia refuse to honor it under any circumstance. Reciprocity gets you permission to carry across a state line. It does not carry Louisiana’s rules with you. Every honoring state applies its own restrictions on where you can carry, how you must behave during a police stop, what magazines are legal, and when deadly force is justified.

States That Honor the Louisiana Permit

The Louisiana State Police maintains the official reciprocity list. As of 2026, these 37 states recognize the Louisiana CHP:1Louisiana State Police. Reciprocity – Concealed Handgun Information

  • Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa
  • Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada
  • New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota
  • Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming

This list shifts. States revoke, add, and modify recognition in response to legislative changes, and a single amendment to a training requirement or background check standard can drop Louisiana from another state’s list quietly. Verify the current list on the Louisiana State Police reciprocity page before every interstate trip, not the last time you traveled.

States That Refuse the Louisiana Permit

Eleven states plus the District of Columbia do not recognize the Louisiana CHP:1Louisiana State Police. Reciprocity – Concealed Handgun Information

  • California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island

Carrying concealed in any of these states on only a Louisiana permit exposes you to serious criminal charges, and the penalties are far heavier than they are at home. In Louisiana, illegal carrying of a weapon is a misdemeanor with a maximum $500 fine or up to six months in jail.2Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code 14-95 – Illegal Carrying of Weapons Pennsylvania, by contrast, classifies unlicensed concealed carry as a third-degree felony for anyone who doesn’t otherwise qualify for a license.3Pennsylvania General Assembly. Pennsylvania Code 18 Section 6106 – Firearms Not to Be Carried Without a License Several non-reciprocal states impose mandatory minimum sentences. Not knowing the permit was invalid is not a defense.

The Resident-Permit Trap

Several states on the reciprocity list honor only permits issued to residents of the issuing state. If you’re a Louisiana resident holding a non-resident permit from Utah or Florida, those states will not treat it as valid on their soil. Colorado, for example, recognizes a Louisiana CHP only when the carrier is a Louisiana resident and can produce a matching Louisiana driver’s license or state ID.4Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Colorado, Florida, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina all restrict recognition to resident permits. Florida additionally requires nonresidents to either hold a valid permit from their home state or independently meet Florida’s eligibility rules.5Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Permitless Carry States

Reciprocity is not the only route to legal carry across state lines. As of 2026, 29 states allow some form of permitless concealed carry, and in these states no permit is required if you meet the state’s own eligibility rules:

  • Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas
  • Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio
  • Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming

Eligibility differs from state to state. Most set the minimum age at 21; Louisiana allows permitless carry at 18. Some states limit permitless carry to their own residents. Others require U.S. citizenship or lawful residency. Walking into a permitless carry state on the assumption that Louisiana’s version of the rule applies is how travelers end up charged. Confirm the destination state’s age threshold and residency terms before you rely on permitless carry instead of your permit.

Rules That Change at Every State Line

Once you cross into a state that honors your permit, that state’s rules govern how you carry. These are the areas where Louisiana permit holders most often get caught off guard.

Duty to Inform Law Enforcement

Some states require you to tell any officer during a stop that you are armed, without being asked. Among the reciprocal states, Alaska, Arkansas, Maine, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin impose that duty. Louisiana does too. In states without an explicit duty to inform, you must still answer truthfully if asked. Silence in a duty-to-inform state can produce a misdemeanor charge on top of an otherwise lawful stop.

Prohibited Locations

Every state publishes its own list of places off-limits to concealed carry even for permit holders. Courthouses, police stations, schools, and government buildings appear on most lists. Beyond those, the lists diverge. Some states ban carry in bars or in any establishment earning a threshold percentage of revenue from alcohol. Others prohibit carry in hospitals, amusement parks, polling places, or houses of worship. Louisiana’s list does not follow you across the border.

No-Weapons Signage

In some states a posted “No Firearms” sign on private property is legally binding, and ignoring it is a crime rather than a request to leave. Texas requires signs to meet exact specifications citing the relevant statute to carry legal force. Ohio treats any conspicuously posted sign as binding. Elsewhere, a sign has no independent force, but refusing to leave when asked is trespassing. Five minutes checking your destination’s rule can save you a criminal charge.

Magazine Capacity

Several reciprocal states cap magazine size. Colorado limits magazines to 15 rounds. Vermont sets a 15-round limit for handguns. Virginia caps handgun magazines at 20 rounds. A standard-capacity magazine that is perfectly legal in Louisiana can put you on the wrong side of the law once you cross into one of these states.

Alcohol

Rules on carrying while drinking vary widely. Some states prohibit carry in any establishment that serves alcohol. Others allow carry in a restaurant’s dining area but not at the bar. Several make it a crime to carry while intoxicated, with some setting a specific blood alcohol threshold and others leaving the call to the arresting officer. The conservative approach when traveling armed is not to drink at all.

Use of Force

This is where the exposure is largest. Louisiana has a stand-your-ground law with no duty to retreat before using force in self-defense. Not every reciprocal state follows that approach. Some require retreat where retreat is safely possible before deadly force becomes justified. Conduct that is lawful self-defense in Louisiana can be charged as manslaughter in a duty-to-retreat state. If you carry across state lines, learn the destination state’s use-of-force rule before you go.

Driving Through States That Don’t Honor Your Permit

If your route to a reciprocal state runs through a state that doesn’t recognize the Louisiana permit, federal law provides a narrow safe passage. The Firearm Owners Protection Act, 18 U.S.C. ยง 926A, lets you transport a firearm through any state as long as you can lawfully possess it at both your origin and your destination.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 926A – Interstate Transportation of Firearms

The conditions are strict. The firearm must be unloaded. Neither the firearm nor the ammunition can be readily accessible from the passenger compartment. In a vehicle with no separate trunk, both must be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or center console. Stops in the non-permissive state must be limited to fuel, food, or emergencies. A hotel stay, a visit to a friend, or any extended stop can void FOPA protection.

This matters most on drives from Louisiana toward the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. A route through Mississippi, Alabama, and other friendly states keeps you inside reciprocity the whole way. A route through Maryland or New Jersey does not, and both states have a history of aggressive enforcement against travelers who fall short of FOPA’s requirements.

Keeping the List Current

Reciprocity agreements are not permanent. States revoke, add, and modify recognition without much public notice, often in response to legislative changes on either side of the border.
