Louisiana’s disabled veteran property tax exemption amounts come in three tiers, added on top of the standard $7,500 homestead exemption every homeowner already receives. Veterans with a service-connected VA disability rating of 50% to 69% get an additional $2,500 of assessed value exempted. Veterans rated 70% to 99% get an additional $4,500. Veterans rated 100%, including those with total disability based on individual unemployability, pay no ad valorem property taxes on their primary residence at all.1Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs. Why the Dollar Figures Look Small
Louisiana assesses residential property at 10% of fair market value. A home worth $200,000 has an assessed value of $20,000, and every exemption in state law is written against that assessed figure rather than the market price.2Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Constitution Article VII Section 18 – Ad Valorem Taxes
The standard homestead exemption shelters the first $7,500 of assessed value, which is $75,000 of market value. The disabled veteran exemption stacks directly on top of that baseline.3FindLaw. Louisiana Constitution Article VII Section 21 – Other Property Exemptions
The Three Exemption Tiers
50% to Less Than 70% Disability
An additional $2,500 of assessed value is exempt. Combined with the homestead exemption, the first $10,000 of assessed value, or $100,000 in market value, is sheltered from property taxes. You pay taxes only on assessed value above that threshold.3FindLaw. Louisiana Constitution Article VII Section 21 – Other Property Exemptions
70% to Less Than 100% Disability
An additional $4,500 of assessed value is exempt. Combined with the homestead exemption, the first $12,000 of assessed value, or $120,000 in market value, pays no property taxes.3FindLaw. Louisiana Constitution Article VII Section 21 – Other Property Exemptions
100% Disability
The entire assessed value of the property is exempt from ad valorem property taxes. This tier includes veterans rated 100% based on individual unemployability. Certain municipal assessments may still apply.1Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs. State Benefits
What the Exemptions Look Like on a Real Home
Take a home with a fair market value of $180,000. The assessed value is $18,000.
A veteran rated at 60% starts with the $7,500 homestead exemption and adds the $2,500 veteran exemption, leaving $8,000 of assessed value subject to tax.
The same home for a veteran rated at 80% carries a total exemption of $12,000, leaving only $6,000 taxable.
At a 100% rating, the entire $18,000 assessed value is exempt, and the veteran owes nothing in ad valorem property taxes on that property.
Who Qualifies
Three conditions have to be met. You need a service-connected disability rating of at least 50% from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. You must own the property. And you must occupy it as your primary residence, with the standard homestead exemption already in place on it.1Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs. State Benefits
Service-connected means the VA has determined the disability resulted from or was aggravated by military service. A medical disability unrelated to service does not qualify, and you’ll need VA documentation showing both the rating percentage and the service connection.
Surviving Spouse Amounts
Louisiana extends the exemption to the surviving spouse of a qualifying veteran, and the spouse can claim it even if it was not in effect on the property before the veteran’s death. The spouse must continue to own and occupy the home as their primary residence.3FindLaw. Louisiana Constitution Article VII Section 21 – Other Property Exemptions
The tier passes through at the veteran’s disability rating at the time of death. A surviving spouse of a 100%-rated veteran receives full exemption from ad valorem taxes. At 70% to 99%, the spouse receives the $4,500 additional exemption. At 50% to 69%, the spouse receives the $2,500 exemption.4Louisiana State Legislature. SB 180, 2026 Regular Session
How to Claim the Exemption
You apply through your local parish assessor’s office. The key document is a Disabled Veterans Property Tax Benefits Certification letter from the VA, available by calling 1-800-827-1000 or through the VA’s online portal at VA.gov. If you cannot get that letter, the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs can issue an income verification letter with a memo showing your service-connected disability percentage; call 1-318-487-5743.5Morehouse Parish Assessor. To download the VA Benefit Summary Letter online, sign in at VA.gov with a verified Login.gov or ID.me account and confirm the address the VA has on file, since that address prints on the letter.6Veterans Affairs. Download VA Benefit Letters
Local filing procedures vary by parish, so call your assessor’s office before going in. Bring your VA letter, government-issued ID, and proof that the property is your primary residence.
