Louisiana REAL ID Cost: Fees, Documents, and Requirements

A REAL ID compliant driver’s license in Louisiana costs $32.25, and a REAL ID state identification card costs $27.00. Louisiana charges no extra fee for choosing the compliant version over a standard credential.¹ Those base amounts can climb by up to $8 in built-in service fees, and by up to another $23 if you use a public tag agent instead of an Office of Motor Vehicles location.²

Full Fee Schedule

The OMV publishes prices as ranges because a variable service fee (up to $8) is baked into every transaction. Your age and the card’s duration also change the price.³

Class E personal driver’s license, 6-year, under age 70: $32.25 to $40.25
Class E personal driver’s license, 6-year, age 70 and older: $18.75 to $26.75
Class I state identification card, 6-year: $27.00 to $35.00
Class I state identification card, 2-year, age 15 and younger: $15.00 to $23.00

The REAL ID version costs exactly the same as the non-compliant version. If your license is up for renewal, you just ask for the REAL ID at your normal renewal price. If it is not yet due, you can still upgrade, but you will pay the standard duplicate or replacement fee for your credential type.

When You’ll Pay More

Public tag agents are private businesses licensed to handle OMV transactions. They can charge a convenience fee of up to $23 per transaction on top of the standard OMV fees. State law requires the agent to disclose the fee before starting your transaction and to tell you that the same service is available at an OMV office without the extra charge.²

Payment method matters too. OMV offices accept cash, money orders, and credit or debit cards. Card payments carry a processing surcharge calculated as a percentage of the transaction, which is what pushes the total toward the top of each range above. To pay the lowest possible amount, bring cash or a money order to an OMV office rather than a tag agent.

Check Your Current Card First

Before paying anything, look at the card in your wallet. A REAL ID compliant Louisiana license or ID has a white star with a gold outline on the upper portion of the card.¹ If the star is there, you are already compliant and do not need to do anything until your next renewal. If it is missing, your card will not be accepted at TSA checkpoints or federal facilities that require ID.

Documents You Need to Bring

A first-time REAL ID requires original documents in five categories: identity, lawful status, date of birth, Social Security information, and Louisiana residency. Photocopies are not accepted for any of them.⁴

Identity and Date of Birth

One primary document covers both. The most common choices are an original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate or an unexpired U.S. passport or passport card. Certificates of naturalization and certificates of birth abroad issued by the U.S. Department of State also work.⁴

Social Security Number

You do not need the physical card. Louisiana’s OMV verifies your number directly with the Social Security Administration, so you can provide it verbally.¹ If verification fails, having your Social Security card, a W-2, or a printed pay stub as backup saves a second trip.

Louisiana Residency

First-time applicants need two documents showing a Louisiana home address, such as utility bills, bank statements, or a vehicle registration in your name.⁴ If you already hold a Louisiana license or ID and are not changing your address, your existing card counts as one, so you only need one additional residency document.⁵

Name Change Paperwork

If your current legal name does not match the name on your identity document, you need paperwork that connects the two. A certified marriage certificate is the usual example. For non-marriage name changes, the OMV requires all supporting documents to already reflect the updated name, which may mean updating your Social Security card and other records first.⁶ A middle initial versus a full middle name does not count as a mismatch.

Non-U.S. Citizens

Lawful permanent residents and other non-citizens can get a REAL ID, but the identity documents differ. In place of a birth certificate, you would present a Permanent Resident Card (I-551), a DHS refugee travel document (I-571), or a DHS permit to reenter the United States (I-327). If you do not have and are ineligible for a Social Security number, bring a letter from the Social Security Administration stating that.⁴ Applicants on temporary status may receive a credential that expires with their authorized stay rather than on the standard six-year cycle.

How to Apply

A first-time REAL ID requires an in-person visit. You cannot apply online, by mail, or by phone. Any Louisiana OMV office or authorized public tag agent can process the application.¹ The OMV offers online appointments, and booking one is worth the effort. Walk-in wait times at busy locations can run into hours. The clerk reviews your original documents, takes your photograph, and collects the fee. You leave with a temporary paper ID that works until your permanent card arrives by mail.

Do You Even Need One?

Full enforcement of the REAL ID Act began on May 7, 2025. Since that date, TSA will not accept a non-compliant state license or ID at airport security checkpoints.⁷ The same rule applies to most federal facilities that check ID at entry.⁸

A REAL ID is not the only option. TSA also accepts a U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. military ID, a permanent resident card, DHS trusted traveler cards like Global Entry or NEXUS, and a transportation worker identification credential, among others.⁹ Children under 18 do not need any identification for domestic flights.¹⁰ If you already carry a valid passport and use it when you fly, you can skip the REAL ID entirely.
