Louisiana State Police Pay Scale: Ranks, Steps, and Raises

The Louisiana State Police pay scale starts cadets at $56,000 a year and reaches $159,556 at the top of the highest published pay grade. Salaries are set on a grid of six pay grades and up to 23 steps, adopted by the State Police Commission rather than the Legislature, with automatic annual step increases rewarding longevity.1State Police Commission. Salary Ranges by Rank

The schedule effective January 8, 2024 sets the following annual pay ranges:

  • Cadet entrance rate: $56,000
  • Trooper after academy and field training: about $59,410, rising to $107,301 at the top of the P1 range
  • Sergeant (P2): $61,880 to $118,568
  • Lieutenant (P3): $68,377 to $131,018
  • Captain (P5): $77,823 to $149,118
  • P6 (highest published grade): $83,271 to $159,556

The P1 grade covers Cadets, Troopers, Senior Troopers, and Master Troopers. P2 covers Sergeants and Emergency Services Technicians. P3 covers Lieutenants, Polygraphists, State Police Pilots, and several supervisory technical roles. P5 covers Captains, Emergency Services Deputy Command Technicians, and Master Pilots.2Louisiana State Police. Louisiana State Police Pay Rank/Schedule

How the Grade and Step Grid Works

Pay is fixed by two things: the pay grade tied to your rank, and the step tied to where you are in your career. The first three steps of any grade are milestone-based rather than time-based. Step one is the entrance rate. Step two applies after graduating from the State Police Training Academy. Step three applies after completing the Field Training Officer program.2Louisiana State Police. Louisiana State Police Pay Rank/Schedule

After those three, the schedule allows for 20 additional longevity steps, giving a trooper up to 23 salary levels within a single grade. Each step is roughly a 3% increase over the previous one, which is why the gap between a new P1 trooper and one at step 20 works out to about $48,000.

Longevity Steps and Promotions

Longevity increases are automatic, not merit-based. Under State Police Commission Rule 6.14, any employee holding the rank of Trooper or higher who remains in active status receives one step increase per year, moving them to the next designated rate within their pay grade.3State Police Commission. A promotion resets the employee into the new grade’s range, typically at a rate above their previous salary. So a Trooper promoted to Sergeant enters the P2 grid rather than staying on P1. That structure means two paths to higher pay: stay at the same rank and collect annual longevity steps, or promote up and take the higher grade’s ceiling.

Pay Beyond Base Salary

Base salary is only part of total compensation. The agency also provides a take-home state vehicle, overtime opportunities, and what it describes as a strong retirement package.4Louisiana State Police. Apply Now for LSP Cadet Class 109

Overtime rules for law enforcement differ from ordinary workers. Under 29 U.S.C. ยง 207(k), public agencies can use extended work periods of up to 28 consecutive days instead of the standard 40-hour workweek. For law enforcement officers on a 28-day cycle, overtime kicks in only after 171 hours, and hours beyond that threshold must be paid at one and a half times the regular rate.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 29 USC 207 – Maximum Hours

The State Police Commission can also approve premium pay for positions with unusual working conditions, and it can approve individual pay adjustments when an appointing authority justifies one at a public hearing. Those tools cover specialized roles like SWAT operators, forensic analysts, and pilots when the standard schedule doesn’t reflect market conditions.6State Police Commission. Retirement Benefits

Troopers participate in the Louisiana State Police Retirement System (LSPRS), a standalone pension plan separate from the state’s general employee retirement system. LSPRS is qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Because the pension is tied to a dedicated system rather than the broader state employee pool, benefit calculations depend on factors specific to state police demographics and investment returns.

Troopers can also contribute to a 457(b) deferred compensation plan. For 2026, the maximum elective deferral is $24,500, with an additional $8,000 catch-up contribution available at age 50 or older, for a potential total of $32,500.7Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Limit Increases to $24,500 for 2026, IRA Limit Increases to $7,500

One recent federal change matters for career planning. The Social Security Fairness Act, signed into law on January 5, 2025, eliminated both the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset. Those provisions had previously reduced Social Security benefits for workers who also received a pension from employment not covered by Social Security. December 2023 was the last month either provision applied, so eligible officers see higher Social Security payments going forward.8Social Security Administration. How the Pay Scale Gets Changed

The pay scale doesn’t move through ordinary legislation the way most state employee salaries do. The State Police Commission has independent authority to adopt and amend the pay plan. The Commission’s Director consults with the appointing authority and the state fiscal officer, conducts market research, and prepares a proposed plan or amendment. That proposal goes to the full Commission at a public hearing. If adopted, it still requires the Governor’s approval before taking effect. The Director is required to recommend a pay structure adjustment at least once a year.6State Police Commission. State Police Commission Rule Chapter 6 – Uniform Pay and Classification Plan

The factors the Commission weighs are spelled out in its rules: applicant availability, quality of the applicant pool, turnover rates, federal law, market competition, pay practices of competitors, and available funding. When the Commission adopted the current schedule through Transmittal Sheet No. 82, it cited “nationwide market demands of law enforcement agencies” and the need to both retain existing troopers and recruit new cadets.1State Police Commission. How Louisiana Compares Regionally

Louisiana’s $56,000 cadet starting rate is competitive in the region but trails some larger neighbors at entry. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers with less than four years of service earn roughly $62,700, rising to about $93,400 after 20 years. Louisiana’s schedule catches up at the senior end, with a step-20 trooper earning over $107,000. Nationally, entry-level state trooper salaries run roughly $40,000 to over $80,000, with the top of that range concentrated in high-cost states and larger budgets. Louisiana sits in the middle.

Raw base pay misses part of the picture. The take-home vehicle, the dedicated retirement system, and the 171-hour overtime threshold all affect what a trooper actually earns. Anyone weighing offers from neighboring states should compare the full package rather than just the starting figure.
