The Louisiana vehicle sales tax is 5% at the state level, with parish and municipal taxes added on top based on where you live. Local rates run roughly 2% to 7%, so the combined bill on a car purchase typically lands somewhere between 7% and 12% of the taxable price. Because the rate follows the buyer’s home address rather than the dealer’s location, two people buying identical cars at the same lot can owe different amounts.1Louisiana Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Sales Tax
The tax applies to cars, motorcycles, trucks, trailers, semi-trailers, motor buses, and house trailers, whether new or used. Louisiana’s usual exemption for casual sales of personal property does not apply to vehicles, so buying from a neighbor is taxed the same as buying from a dealer.2Louisiana Department of Revenue. How the Taxable Amount Is Calculated
You pay tax on the total consideration for the vehicle: cash, credit, and the value of anything else exchanged. The biggest reduction most buyers get is the trade-in. Louisiana subtracts the market value of a vehicle you trade in before applying the tax rate.3Louisiana Department of Revenue. Louisiana Administrative Code 61-I-4301 – Definitions On a $35,000 truck with a $10,000 trade-in, you pay tax on $25,000.
Negative equity trips people up. If you owe more on your trade than it’s worth and roll the balance into the new loan, that extra loan amount doesn’t raise your taxable price. Only the trade-in allowance the dealer credits you counts.
Dealer discounts reduce the price you actually pay and therefore reduce the tax. Manufacturer rebates are handled differently in different states, sometimes treated as a third-party payment that leaves the pre-rebate price taxable. Ask your dealer how the rebate is applied on your paperwork, because it can shift the bill by a few hundred dollars.
Documentation fees, prep charges, and similar dealer add-ons generally get folded into the sales price and taxed with it. Separately stated transportation or delivery charges typically are not. If your invoice bundles delivery into the price, it’s more likely to be taxed than if it’s broken out on its own line.
Once you land on the taxable amount, multiply by your combined state and local rate. The state portion is 5%,4Louisiana Department of Revenue. General Sales and Use Tax and the Department of Revenue publishes a lookup tool for the local rate tied to your address.
How and When You Pay
If you buy from a dealership, the dealer handles it. They calculate the tax, collect it from you at closing, and remit it to the state by the 20th of the following month.5Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:306 – Returns and Payment of Tax Nothing further is required of you on the tax side.
If you buy from a private seller, the responsibility is yours. You pay the sales tax directly to the Office of Motor Vehicles when you register the vehicle,6Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code RS 47:501 – Owner to Secure Registration and OMV policy gives you 40 days from the sale date to do it without penalty or interest.7Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Office of Motor Vehicles Sales Tax Collection Policy Missing the window doesn’t cancel what you owe. It adds penalties on top, and driving an unregistered vehicle creates its own traffic-law exposure.
Buying a Vehicle Out of State
Bring a vehicle in from another state and Louisiana charges use tax when you first register it here. You get a credit against the state portion for sales or use tax you already paid to the other state, but only if two conditions are met: you actually paid tax on that vehicle elsewhere, and the other state gives a reciprocal credit for Louisiana taxes.8Legal Information Institute. Louisiana Administrative Code tit 61 I-4307 – Collection
The credit only offsets Louisiana’s state tax, not local parish taxes, and it doesn’t cover taxes paid to local governments in other states or to foreign countries. It’s calculated on the lesser of your original purchase price or the vehicle’s fair market value when it enters Louisiana, so a car that has depreciated gets the smaller figure.
Active-duty military enlisted for two years or more who buy a vehicle out of state while on duty get the credit whether or not the other state reciprocates.
Exemptions to Know About
Louisiana’s vehicle tax exemptions are narrower than buyers often assume. The main ones:
- Vehicles bought exclusively for lease or rental by a dealer qualified with the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission or the Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle and Parts Commission. Tax then attaches to the lease or rental payments as they’re collected.9Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:305.36 – Exclusions for Motor Vehicles for Lease or Rental
- Vehicles used by persons with orthopedic disabilities, under a separate rebate provision.10Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:305.72 – Rebates, Sales and Use Tax for Motor Vehicles Used by Persons with Orthopedic Disabilities
- Vehicles a licensed dealer buys for resale inventory.
Government entities and nonprofits do not automatically qualify for a vehicle sales tax exemption. If you’re buying on behalf of one, confirm eligibility with the Department of Revenue before assuming no tax is owed.
Penalties for Paying Late
Louisiana’s penalty on late vehicle tax is 5% of the amount owed for the first 30 days, plus another 5% for each additional 30-day period (or fraction of one) you remain delinquent. This applies whether you filed late, paid late, or both. Total penalties cap at 25% of the tax owed, and combined late-filing and late-payment penalties can’t stack for more than five 30-day periods on a single return.11Justia Law. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:1602 – Penalty for Failure to File or Pay Tax Interest runs separately from the original due date until the tax is fully paid.
If the delay came from something other than negligence, such as a natural disaster or serious illness, you can ask the Secretary of Revenue in writing to waive all or part of the penalty.12Louisiana State Legislature. Louisiana Code RS 47:1603 – Waiver of Penalties
Disputing an Assessment
If the Department of Revenue sends a notice saying you owe more than you think you should, you have 60 days from the notice date to appeal to the Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals. Miss that window and the assessment becomes final and collectible.13Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals. The 2025 Rate Change
The state rate rose from 4.45% to 5% on January 1, 2025 under Act 11 of the 2024 Third Extraordinary Session, and stays at 5% through December 31, 2029.15Louisiana Department of Revenue. Sales Tax Reform FAQs For a buyer, the practical difference is 0.55 percentage points on the state’s share. On $30,000 of taxable price, that’s about $165 more in state tax than under the old rate. Local rates were not changed directly by this legislation.
