The Justice of the Peace Court in Your Ward
Each ward elects a justice of the peace who runs a court with limited but practical jurisdiction. Evictions are where these courts do their heaviest work. A justice of the peace court can hear residential eviction suits regardless of the rent amount. For commercial leases and farmland, the court has jurisdiction as long as the monthly rent does not exceed $5,000.4FindLaw. Justices of the peace are elected during congressional elections and serve six-year terms. They must live in the ward, be registered to vote there, and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. The Ward Constable
Every justice of the peace court has a constable who serves as its executive officer. The constable serves legal papers, carries out evictions, and enforces judgments (including property seizures) inside the ward. When a justice of the peace court enters a judgment and the losing party does not pay, the constable is the person who shows up. That local enforcement means you are dealing with someone who works within the ward rather than a parish-wide sheriff’s office handling much larger caseloads.

Wards are the larger political unit from which voting precincts are carved. Wards in New Orleans
Orleans Parish works differently from the rest of the state. New Orleans is divided into 17 wards, and unlike rural parishes where lines shift through redistricting, these boundaries are embedded in the city’s identity. New Orleans wards are not the city’s property tax boundaries. They are distinct from municipal districts, assessment districts, and council districts.
