Check the Jail Roster Before You Call

You can often answer your own question faster than Booking can. The Lucas County Court maintains an online jail roster at lucascountycourt.org that you can search by first and last name.3Lucas County Court. Jail Roster That matters most on weekends and overnight, when Booking staff are handling multiple arrests at once and the phones get backed up.

If the person you are looking for does not show up on the roster, they may still be in intake. Booking can take several hours. Waiting a few hours and then calling 419-213-4962 is a reasonable next step.

Talking to Someone Inside

You cannot call an inmate at the Lucas County Corrections Center. All calls are outgoing only, placed by the inmate to a number you have set up in advance. To receive those calls, you need an account with the facility’s phone service provider, ICSolutions, which the Sheriff’s Office identifies for phone services.2Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. Setup follows the usual pattern for prepaid inmate calling. Create an account on the provider’s site, register the phone number you want calls to reach, and fund the account with a debit or credit card. Have the inmate’s full legal name and booking number ready. Once the account has money in it, the inmate can dial your number from the housing unit, and each call draws down your balance.

When the call comes in, an automated message will identify it as coming from the Lucas County Corrections Center and prompt you to press a key to accept. If you miss the prompt, or if the system detects call-forwarding to another line, the call drops. Calls typically run 15 minutes, which is a standard limit meant to give everyone in the unit a turn.

Every call except an attorney call is recorded and monitored. Prosecutors regularly subpoena jail call recordings, and what gets said on them routinely ends up in court. Anyone with pending charges should assume every word is heard and keep legal matters off these lines.

Attorney Calls Are Not Recorded

Calls between an inmate and their attorney are protected under the Sixth Amendment, and the jail is not permitted to monitor or record them. The inmate needs to give the attorney’s number to jail administration to be placed on a special unmonitored list. If an attorney’s calls are being recorded or blocked, the attorney should contact the Director of Jail Security at 419-213-4980.2Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. Corrections Center Inmate Services

The protection covers calls with the licensed attorney representing the inmate. Calls to paralegals, legal aid organizations, or family members talking about the case do not qualify and are recorded like any other.

If Your Number Stops Receiving Calls

Blocks are common. The cause can be suspected fraud on the account, an unpaid balance, a phone carrier that lacks a billing agreement with the provider, or a number that was never added to the inmate’s approved list. An attempted three-way call can also trigger an automatic block, and the system does not always tell you it happened.

Start with the phone service provider’s customer service line. Ask directly whether your number is blocked and why. Many blocks clear once you verify your identity or settle a balance. If the provider shows no block on their end, the restriction may be on the facility’s side; in that case, call Inmate Services at 419-213-4985 to ask whether a restriction was placed on the inmate’s phone privileges.1Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. Scheduling a Visit

To book a visit, call 419-213-4863. Visits are by appointment only, held Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. You can book up to six days ahead.2Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. Corrections Center Inmate Services

Each visit runs 30 minutes and is limited to one adult visitor, unless both visitors are parents or grandparents of the inmate. Children may visit when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. You have to be on the inmate’s approved visitor list and arrive at least 10 minutes early to check in. Anyone with an active warrant will be turned away and may be arrested at the facility, so check your own legal status before you go.
