Ludington Secretary of State: Services, Appointments & Fees

The Ludington Secretary of State office is Mason County’s branch for driver’s licenses, state IDs, vehicle titles and plates, watercraft and recreational vehicle registration, disability parking placards, notary filings, and voter registration. It sits on West US Highway 10 in Ludington and runs primarily by appointment, though walk-ins can request the next open slot. Before you make the drive, check whether a self-service kiosk or the online portal can handle what you need.

Location and Contact

The branch is on West US Highway 10 in Ludington. Michigan SOS offices occasionally relocate or shift their hours, so confirm the exact address and current schedule by calling the statewide line at 888-767-6424 or using the office locator at michigan.gov/sos. Most Michigan branches operate Monday through Friday, with some locations keeping one evening of extended hours.

Can You Skip the Branch?

Many of the reasons people come to a Secretary of State office no longer require a counter visit.

The Meijer Kiosk

A Michigan self-service station sits inside the Ludington Meijer at 3900 W. US-10. It renews vehicle registrations for cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, and watercraft and prints the plate tab on the spot for automobiles and motorcycles. It also handles non-commercial driver’s license and ID renewals when no new photo is required, voter registration, and signing up for the organ donor registry.1Michigan SELF-SERVICE STATION. Ludington Meijer

Each transaction carries a $4.25 service fee, plus a 2.3% processing fee for credit or debit cards. You can renew a vehicle registration up to six months early and up to ten months after it expires, and renew a license or ID up to a year before expiration.2Michigan SELF-SERVICE STATION. Registration Renewal and More The kiosk cannot process commercial driver’s licenses, replace lost or stolen registrations, or update your vehicle address.

Online

Through the Secretary of State’s online portal, you can renew vehicle and watercraft registrations, replace a lost license or ID, submit a change of address, order a duplicate title, and register to vote.3Michigan Department of State. Online Services

Online driver’s license renewal has limits. Michigan will not let you renew online if you have already renewed through alternative methods for your last two cycles, if the photo on file is more than 12 years old, if you are not a U.S. citizen, or if your license has been expired more than four years. In any of those cases, you need to go in person.3Michigan Department of State. Online Services Upgrading to a REAL ID or Enhanced license also requires an in-person visit, because staff need to verify original citizenship documents.

Services Handled at the Branch

The Ludington office provides the full range of Secretary of State services. Clerks process original and renewal driver’s licenses, state identification cards, vehicle title transfers, and license plate transactions. You can register a boat, jet ski, or snowmobile here as well; watercraft registrations run from $9 for a non-motorized sailboat to $448 for a motorboat 50 feet or longer, and most registrations cover three years.4Michigan Department of State. Recreational Vehicles and Watercraft

Beyond vehicles, the branch handles disability parking placard applications, notary public filings, and voter registration. Michigan automatically registers eligible citizens to vote when they apply for or renew a driver’s license or state ID, unless they opt out.5Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 168.493a

A first disability parking placard is free, and so are renewals. Replacing a lost or stolen placard costs $10. You need a completed application signed by a licensed physician, physician assistant, or optometrist certifying that you meet one of Michigan’s qualifying conditions, such as the inability to walk more than 200 feet without resting or reliance on a wheelchair, walker, or similar device.6Michigan Department of State. REAL ID and Enhanced Licenses

Federal REAL ID enforcement began in May 2025, and travelers who show up at an airport without acceptable identification now face a $45 fee.7Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A standard Michigan driver’s license without the star marking is not sufficient for boarding a domestic flight or entering certain federal buildings.

Michigan offers two compliant options. A REAL ID license carries a gold star. An Enhanced Driver’s License works for domestic air travel and also serves as a passport alternative for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean nations. All Michigan enhanced licenses are automatically REAL ID-compliant, even those issued before the star was added.8Michigan Department of State. Enhanced License and ID

To upgrade a standard Michigan license to REAL ID, visit the Ludington office with your current license and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence. Accepted citizenship documents include a valid U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate with a raised seal from the issuing government office, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship.9Michigan Department of State. REAL ID If your name has changed since the document was issued, bring the legal name-change documentation too.

Documents to Bring

The biggest reason people waste a trip is showing up without the right paperwork. For any license or ID application, Michigan requires documents in four categories.

  • Social Security number: your Social Security card, a W-2, an SSA-1099 or non-SSA-1099 form, or a pay stub showing your name and full SSN.
  • U.S. citizenship or legal presence: a valid U.S. passport, certified birth certificate with a raised seal, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Citizenship. Non-citizens need a valid Permanent Resident Card, a foreign passport with a U.S. visa and I-94, or an Employment Authorization Document.
  • Proof of identity (first-time applicants without a prior Michigan photo ID): a valid U.S. passport, an out-of-state license or ID expired less than one year, a government employee photo ID, a U.S. military photo ID, or a federally recognized tribal photo ID.
  • Michigan residency (two documents required): a utility or credit card bill issued within the last 90 days, a bank statement from the last 90 days, a mortgage or lease agreement, a pay stub with your name and address, an insurance policy, or a government document. Electronic versions of bills and statements are accepted.8Michigan Department of State. Enhanced License and ID

For a vehicle title transfer, bring the completed TR-11L form (Application for Michigan Vehicle Title), including the Vehicle Identification Number and odometer reading.10Michigan Secretary of State. Application for Michigan Vehicle Title For a first-time license or ID, the SOS-428 form lists everything to gather before your visit.11Michigan Secretary of State. Applying for a License or ID Card Filling forms out completely before you arrive is the single easiest way to avoid getting sent home.

Fees for Common Transactions

Michigan sets its license and title fees by statute, so these are the same at every branch:

  • Original operator’s license: $25
  • Operator’s license renewal before expiration: $18
  • Operator’s license renewal after expiration: $25, the same as the original fee
  • Chauffeur’s license: $3512Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.811

A basic vehicle title transfer costs $15. Enhanced licenses and enhanced IDs carry higher fees than standard versions; a late renewal on an enhanced license runs $45 instead of $25.13Michigan Department of State. License or ID Renewal

You can renew a license up to four years after it expires. Past that window, you have to start over with a new application.13Michigan Department of State. License or ID Renewal

Booking an Appointment and Arriving

Michigan Secretary of State offices run primarily by appointment. Book a time slot through the scheduling tool at michigan.gov/sos or by calling 888-767-6424. If you walk in, staff will try to fit you in, but the next available slot may be later that day or the following business day.14Michigan Department of State. Scheduling an Office Visit A smaller office like Ludington usually has better walk-in odds than a metro branch, but an appointment still beats sitting in the lobby.

When you arrive, check in at the self-service kiosk near the entrance. It notifies staff and puts you in the queue. Once a clerk finishes your paperwork for a license or ID, you receive a temporary paper document that’s valid for driving while your permanent card is printed and mailed. Most people get the card within two to three weeks. For vehicle transactions, clerks typically hand you the plate and registration tab at the counter.
