Madera County CCW Permit: Eligibility, Training, and Application

A Madera County CCW permit is issued by the Madera County Sheriff’s Office through an online portal called Permitium, and because California is a “shall issue” state the sheriff must grant your license once you meet every statutory requirement. Plan on a two-year license, roughly 16 hours of training, a Live Scan background check, and an in-person interview. Out-of-pocket costs run several hundred dollars once you add the application fee, training, and fingerprinting together.

Who Qualifies

California Penal Code Section 26150 sets five requirements, and all five must be met.1California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 26150 – License to Carry a Pistol, Revolver, or Other Firearm Capable of Being Concealed Upon the Person

That last point trips people up. A spouse’s or family member’s firearm cannot ride on your license. If you recently bought or transferred a gun, confirm the DOJ Automated Firearms System reflects the transaction before you apply.

The sheriff may also refer you for a psychological evaluation. Under Penal Code Section 26190 the cost of that evaluation is capped at $150 when required.

The Training You Need First

Finish your course before you start the application, because you will upload the certificate. New applicants must complete at least 16 hours of instruction from a DOJ-certified firearms instructor.4California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 26165 – License to Carry a Pistol, Revolver, or Other Firearm Capable of Being Concealed Upon the Person The curriculum has to cover firearm safety and handling; safe storage and legal transport, including securing a gun in a vehicle; where permit holders can and cannot carry; the lawful use of a firearm and of lethal force in self-defense; a mental health component of at least one hour; a written exam; and live-fire exercises demonstrating safe handling and proficiency with each firearm you want on your license.

Local courses typically run $100 to $350 depending on the instructor and whether ammunition is included. Renewals require eight hours instead of 16, but the content and the live-fire qualification are the same.5California Legislative Information. How To Apply Through Permitium

Madera County processes CCW applications entirely online. Create an account on the Permitium portal, complete the application, and upload your training certificate, proof of residency, and identification.6Madera County. Fees are split in two. You pay $105 up front when you submit the application. If the application is approved, you pay a $44 issuance fee before the license is released.2Madera County Sheriff’s Office. Live Scan Fingerprints

You must submit Live Scan fingerprints through an authorized vendor. The digital prints go to both the California DOJ and the FBI. Vendors charge their own rolling fee, typically $20 to $30, on top of the state and federal processing fees set by the DOJ. Keep the receipt for your file.

The Interview

Once your digital file is complete, you’ll schedule an in-person interview with a Sheriff’s Office investigator who reviews your application in detail and assesses whether anything in your background raises concerns. After the interview, the department finishes its background review and posts the decision through Permitium.

What the License Covers, and Where It Doesn’t

Your license lists every firearm you are authorized to carry concealed. Carrying an unlisted gun violates state law even if you own it legally. Adding or removing a firearm requires an amendment through Permitium.

California’s list of off-limits places is longer than most new permit holders expect. Penal Code Section 26230 bars CCW holders from more than two dozen categories of locations,7California Legislative Information. California Code PEN 26230 including school zones, preschools and childcare facilities, courthouses, state and local government buildings, jails and prisons, college and university campuses, airports, police and sheriff stations, and polling places.

A 2025 California Department of Justice bulletin confirmed that further locations became enforceable after a Ninth Circuit ruling reversed an earlier injunction.8California Department of Justice. Additional Restrictions on CCW License Holders Carrying Concealed Firearms in Certain Sensitive Places Are Now in Effect Those include hospitals, medical offices, urgent care, and mental health facilities; public transit and transit authority property; bars, restaurants, and other venues serving alcohol for on-site consumption; public gatherings and permitted events; playgrounds and youth centers; parks, athletic areas, and public athletic facilities; state parks and Fish and Wildlife land outside designated hunting areas; casinos; stadiums and arenas; public libraries; and amusement parks, zoos, and museums.

Walking through downtown Madera or Oakhurst, that means watching for nearby government buildings, parks, and anywhere alcohol is served. A violation can mean criminal charges and revocation of your license.

One further restriction is still moving: SB 2 would require private businesses open to the public to post signage affirmatively allowing firearms before you could carry inside, reversing the usual default. Federal court challenges have shifted the enforceability of that provision more than once, so check the California DOJ website for current status before relying on it.

Keeping and Renewing Your License

A standard Madera County CCW license is valid for up to two years.9State of California – Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Carry Concealed Weapons (CCW) Licenses Notify the Sheriff’s Office in writing if you move within the county. If you move out of Madera County, the permit no longer covers you where you live, and you’ll need to apply with the sheriff in your new county. False or incomplete information on any application or amendment is grounds for denial or revocation.

Start renewal well before the expiration date. You’ll take the eight-hour refresher, submit a renewal through Permitium, and pay the renewal fee. If you let the license lapse, you’re back to the full 16-hour course and the new-applicant process.

If Your Application Is Denied

You can challenge a denial. Under Penal Code Section 26206 you have 30 days from the denial notice to request a hearing in the superior court of your county of residence.9State of California – Department of Justice – Office of the Attorney General. Carry Concealed Weapons (CCW) Licenses Some licensing authorities require an internal appeal first, so read the denial notice carefully for Madera County’s specific instructions.

If the denial rests on a record you believe is inaccurate, gather your supporting documentation before you file. Court filings have their own fees and timelines, and that 30-day window is strict.

Carrying Outside California

Your Madera County license is valid throughout California, but its reach ends at the state line. California does not recognize permits from any other state, and only a limited number of states recognize California permits. Several of those are permitless-carry states where any resident can carry regardless.

Before traveling with a firearm, check the laws of every state you’ll pass through. The federal Firearms Owners’ Protection Act allows interstate transport of a legally owned firearm when it’s unloaded and locked in a container separate from the ammunition, but that covers transport only, not concealed carry in a state that doesn’t honor your license.
