Maine ATV registration runs through the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW), costs $71 a year for residents and $101 for a 7-day or $116 for a full-season nonresident pass, and is required for any ATV ridden anywhere other than land you own or lease.1Maine Dept of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Who Has to Register
The rule is broad. If you ride on any land you don’t own or lease, whether that’s a public trail, a friend’s woodlot you have permission to cross, or a frozen lake, the machine has to be registered with the state.2Maine State Legislature. Maine Code Title 12 13155 – Registration The only people who can skip it entirely are those who ride exclusively on their own property.
Maine’s definition of “ATV” reaches further than the standard four-wheeler. The statute covers any motor-driven, off-road recreational vehicle capable of cross-country travel on land, snow, ice, marsh, or swampland, which sweeps in side-by-sides, three-wheelers, amphibious machines, and some two-wheel off-road motorcycles.3Maine State Legislature. Out-of-state riders should know that Maine does not honor ATV registrations from other states or Canadian provinces for general trail use. A machine legally registered back home still needs a Maine registration to ride here.2Maine State Legislature. Maine Code Title 12 13155 – Registration The IFW commissioner may designate one 3-consecutive-day reciprocity window each year, and organized special events can request a waiver at least 60 days ahead, but outside those narrow openings, visitors need a Maine registration.
What It Costs and How the Year Works
Registration follows a July 1 through June 30 cycle. Register on or before April 30 and your sticker expires that June 30. Register on or after May 1 and it runs through June 30 of the following year, which is the longest coverage you can get from a single fee.4Maine.gov. IFW ATV and Snowmobile Registration

How to Register
Where you register depends on your residency and whether this is a new registration or a renewal. Maine residents registering an ATV for the first time have to do it in person at a town clerk’s office or the IFW main office in Augusta. Resident renewals can be done online. Nonresidents can complete both new registrations and renewals through the state’s online portal.4Maine.gov. IFW ATV and Snowmobile Registration
Before you go or log on, have the vehicle identification number (the serial number stamped on the frame) along with the make, model, and year. For a private sale or new purchase, bring a bill of sale showing the date, seller’s name and address, and purchase price.
Maine requires sales or use tax to be paid before an ATV can be registered. The agent collects any tax due at registration unless the dealer already collected it and gave you a dealer’s certificate, or the sale qualifies for an exemption under Title 36.5Maine Legislature. Town offices generally take cash, checks, or cards, though cards may carry a processing fee. Once you’re done, you get a temporary document you can print and use right away. Stickers and Carrying Your Certificate
Every registered ATV sold in Maine has to have a space six inches wide by three and a half inches tall on the front and rear, mounted as high above the tires as possible, for vertical display of the registration stickers. Operating without those stickers in place is a violation.7Maine Dept of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Laws and Rules – All-Terrain Vehicles If you registered online and the stickers haven’t arrived yet, you have a 30-day grace period to ride without them, or until your certificate shows up, whichever comes first.

Oversized ATVs Can’t Be Registered
If your machine is wider than 65 inches or heavier than 2,000 pounds by the manufacturer’s specs, Maine classifies it as oversized and it cannot be registered in the state. The only exception is for Maine residents whose oversized ATV was already registered before January 1, 2022. Those owners can keep renewing and can transfer that specific machine to another Maine resident.7Maine Dept of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Laws and Rules – All-Terrain Vehicles Even grandfathered oversized ATVs are limited to land where the owner has written permission from the landowner, frozen state waters, or trail segments that don’t prohibit oversized machines.
Age Rules for Riders
Registration is separate from who can legally operate the machine. Children under 10 cannot ride an ATV in Maine at all. Riders 10 to 15 must complete a department-approved ATV safety course and ride with an accompanying adult, and proof of the course has to be available if a warden asks.8Maine State Legislature. Penalties for Riding Unregistered
Wardens and other officers patrol Maine’s trail system, and the fines are not token amounts:
- Operating an unregistered ATV: civil violation, $200 to $500.
- Failing to display registration stickers: civil violation, $100 to $500.
- Failing to present your registration certificate on demand: civil violation, $100 to $500.
Any of these becomes a Class E crime, a misdemeanor that can carry jail time, if you’ve been found liable for three or more civil violations under Maine’s ATV laws in the previous five years.2Maine State Legislature. Maine Code Title 12 13155 – Registration
