To look up a professional license in Maine, start with the state’s free ALMS Online portal at pfr.maine.gov, run by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. A name or license number returns the person’s current status in seconds. That single search covers electricians, plumbers, nurses, accountants, real estate brokers, cosmetologists, funeral directors, and dozens of other regulated professions. Attorneys, drivers, some healthcare credentials, and financial professionals sit in different databases, so the tool you need depends on who you’re checking.
Searching the State Portal
The Department of Professional and Financial Regulation runs ALMS Online through the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation. From the main page, choose whether you’re searching for an individual, a company, or a specific piece of regulated equipment like a boiler or elevator. Then enter a name, or a license number if you have one.
A few things make the search faster. Partial spellings work, so the first few letters of a last name will return matches if you’re not sure of the exact form. Picking the profession from the menu strips out unrelated results. Adding a city separates people who share a name. The portal covers every board administered by the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, from massage therapists and foresters to barbers and pharmacists.
What the Status Actually Means
Click a name to open the detailed record. “Active” means the person is currently authorized to practice. “Expired” or “Lapsed” means the license wasn’t renewed on time or the professional didn’t complete required continuing education. You may also see probation, suspension, or revocation notations, which indicate the board took disciplinary action.
Treat those categories differently. An expired license often just means someone retired or missed a renewal. A suspension or revocation means the board found a violation serious enough to strip the person’s authorization. If you need a paper record for a hiring file or a contractor folder, you can print a verification document straight from the portal.
Practicing without a valid Maine license carries a civil fine of at least $1,000 and up to $5,000 for each violation under Title 10, and the same penalty applies to anyone practicing on an expired, suspended, or revoked license.1Maine Legislature. Looking Up an Attorney
Lawyers aren’t in the ALMS system. The Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar, an independent agency under the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, regulates attorneys and keeps its own Attorney Directory.2Board of Overseers of the Bar. Board of Overseers of the Bar You can search by name or bar number. Results show whether the attorney is active, inactive, or the subject of public discipline such as suspension. Attorneys who fall behind on registration face administrative suspension under the Maine Bar Rules.
Verifying a Healthcare Provider
Healthcare credentials cut across several databases, and one lookup usually isn’t enough.
- State license: Maine-licensed physicians, nurses, dentists, and other healthcare professionals appear in ALMS Online, the same portal used for other professions.
- NPI Registry: The National Provider Identifier registry from CMS is a free national directory showing a provider’s name, specialty, and practice address. Having an NPI does not mean the provider is licensed or credentialed. It’s an identifier, not a license check.3Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. NPPES NPI Registry
- Nursys: For nurses, Nursys is the national licensure and disciplinary database, with data fed directly from participating state boards. The QuickConfirm feature returns RN and LPN/VN license and discipline status for free.4Nursys. Nursys
- OIG Exclusion List: The Office of Inspector General publishes a list of individuals and entities excluded from Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal health programs. An excluded provider cannot furnish, order, or prescribe items or services those programs pay for. Healthcare employers should treat this check as mandatory.5Office of Inspector General. Checking a Financial Professional
Mortgage loan originators, consumer finance companies, and money services businesses are licensed through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System. NMLS Consumer Access is the free public portal for looking up an individual or company’s licensing status. Records update nightly on business days and reflect information self-reported to regulators.6NMLS Consumer Access. Home Pending applications and inactive federal registrations won’t show up.
Investment advisors, brokers, and brokerage firms are on a different system. FINRA’s BrokerCheck shows whether a person or firm is registered to sell securities or provide investment advice, along with employment history, regulatory actions, arbitrations, and complaints.7FINRA. BrokerCheck BrokerCheck does not display civil litigation unrelated to investments or most misdemeanors, but it does include investment-related felonies and theft offenses. Someone selling you an investment product who doesn’t appear on BrokerCheck is a serious warning sign.
Driver and Trucking Records
Driving credentials sit entirely outside the professional licensing system. The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles, part of the Secretary of State’s office, handles driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations under Title 29-A.
To request a driving record, you need the driver’s full name, date of birth, and license number. Fees run $5 for a three-year record and $10 for a ten-year record, with an additional $1 for a certified copy and $2 for a faxed record.8Maine Secretary of State. Get a Driving Record Records show convictions, accident reports, and suspension or revocation notices.
Commercial drivers carry a federal verification layer. Under the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse rules, employers must query the database before letting any driver operate a commercial motor vehicle, and again annually for every current driver.9Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse Violations remain in the Clearinghouse for five years or until the driver finishes the return-to-duty process, whichever is longer.
To check a trucking company’s operating authority and safety record, FMCSA’s SAFER Company Snapshot searches by DOT Number, MC/MX Number, or company name at no cost.10Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. SAFER Web – Company Snapshot The snapshot shows company size, commodity information, safety rating, out-of-service inspections, and crash data. Before hiring a moving company or shipping freight, this tells you whether they’re authorized to run and whether the safety record is a problem.
Contractors and Business Entities
Maine’s licensing thresholds for residential building catch people off guard. Residential building contractors need a state license when the project cost exceeds $75,000. Home improvement contractors working on projects over $7,500 but no more than $75,000 must register with the Board, though contractors who already hold a valid residential or commercial license are exempt from that registration. Homeowners supervising work on their own residence are excepted, as long as they don’t build more than one residence per year.
Plumbers, electricians, and other specialized trades have their own boards and are searchable through ALMS Online. Below the state thresholds, Maine doesn’t require general contractor licensing, so the license lookup won’t help. In those situations your protection comes from checking business entity registration, requiring proof of insurance, and getting a written contract with detailed scope and payment terms. The FTC advises never signing over an insurance check to a contractor, never paying the full amount upfront, and walking away from anyone asking for payment by wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency.11Federal Trade Commission. The Maine Secretary of State’s Division of Corporations offers a free Corporate Name Search to confirm a business entity is legally registered and in good standing. If a contractor or service provider says they’re an LLC or corporation, that’s where you verify the entity exists and is current on its filings. Certified documents pulled from the site can be authenticated using the document authentication number they include.
Insurance Agents
Insurance agents and producers have their own search under the Maine Bureau of Insurance, which sits inside the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. You can search by name, license number, or ID number. One quirk worth knowing: if the agency name starts with “The,” search by the second word instead. The Bureau refreshes its active non-resident producer database quarterly.
Filing a Complaint
If your lookup turns up a problem, or you’ve had a bad experience with someone claiming to be licensed, the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation takes complaints through an online form. A complaint starts a review, and depending on the findings the board can respond with anything from a warning to license revocation. You don’t need a lawyer to file, and the complaint process runs separately from any civil suit you might bring for damages. Complaints about attorneys go to the Board of Overseers of the Bar rather than the general professional licensing office.
