Who Can Renew Online

The online portal is built for existing cardholders. You can use it to renew a current card, order a replacement for one that’s lost or damaged, and update your mailing address or physical descriptors like height, weight, and hair color.3Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles.   • You’ve legally changed your name since your last renewal.
  • You are not a U.S. citizen.
  • You want a REAL ID-compliant card and don’t already have one.
  • You’ve never provided proof of legal presence to the BMV. (In some cases this can be resolved by calling 624-9000 x 52114 rather than coming in.)

If you already hold a REAL ID-compliant card, you can renew it online as long as you’re a U.S. citizen, you’re not changing information on the card, and your current photo hasn’t exceeded federal age guidelines.3Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles. What to Have Ready

  • Your Social Security number.
  • A Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card.
  • A printer, since you’ll print a temporary receipt at the end.

The system matches the information you enter against existing BMV records to confirm you’re the authorized cardholder. If something doesn’t line up, the transaction won’t go through.

Fees

Payment runs at the end of the transaction. If your card is declined, you may need to re-enter your information from the beginning.

Walking Through the Portal

Start at maine.gov/online/bmv/dlr. The portal first asks for your personal identifying information and Social Security number and checks them against the BMV database before moving you on to payment.

On the payment screen, enter your Visa or Mastercard, including the billing address and the three-digit security code on the back. The billing address needs to match what your card issuer has on file, or the charge may be rejected. Once payment goes through, the system generates a confirmation page.

When the New Card Arrives

Your new card comes through the U.S. Postal Service. No official source gives an exact delivery window, so plan on at least a few weeks and avoid cutting it close to travel or any deadline where you’ll need the hard card in hand.

A printed confirmation receipt isn’t guaranteed to work for age-restricted purchases or other situations where a plastic card is expected. Private businesses set their own policies on temporary documents, so carry an alternative form of ID when you can.

If You Need Your First REAL ID

Online renewal doesn’t cover a first-time REAL ID. Maine has been issuing REAL ID-compliant cards since July 2019, and the initial application has to be done in person at a BMV branch.4Maine Secretary of State.
