The Mammoth Lakes sales tax rate is 7.75 percent as of January 1, 2026.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California City and County Sales and Use Tax Rates It applies to most retail purchases of physical goods inside town limits, along with restaurant meals and other prepared food. Groceries for home use are generally exempt, and lodging is taxed separately under a different local tax.
How the 7.75 Percent Is Built
Every California sales tax rate starts at the same statewide floor of 7.25 percent, which combines a 6 percent state rate with a 1.25 percent mandatory local allocation.2California Legislative Information. California Code Revenue and Taxation Code 6051 – Imposition of Tax Unincorporated parts of Mono County sit right at that 7.25 percent floor with no district add-ons.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. The extra half percent in town comes from Measure R, a voter-approved transactions and use tax that adds 0.50 percent dedicated to recreation, trails, and parks.3Town of Mammoth Lakes. Special Uses Taxes
You may also see Measure U mentioned in local tax discussions. That one is a utility users tax funding mobility, recreation, and arts and culture programs, and it appears on utility bills rather than retail receipts.3Town of Mammoth Lakes. What Gets Taxed
The 7.75 percent rate applies to sales of tangible personal property: ski gear, snowboards, outdoor apparel, souvenirs, and the ordinary retail merchandise you find in local shops. Restaurant meals and hot prepared food to go are also taxable at the full rate.4California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Regulation 1603 – Taxable Sales of Food Products
Groceries and the Prepared-Food Line
Most food bought at a grocery store for home consumption is exempt. That covers meat, produce, dairy, eggs, bread, cereal, canned goods, and non-carbonated beverages including bottled water.5California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California Revenue and Taxation Code 6359 – Food Products Candy, gum, and fruit juices qualify too. Carbonated beverages, alcoholic drinks, and dietary supplements such as protein powders and vitamins are taxable.
Preparation is the dividing line. Cold sandwiches from a deli counter sold to go are generally exempt; hot food and anything served for on-premises consumption is taxed.4California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Regulation 1603 – Taxable Sales of Food Products Stocking a rental cabin from the local market produces a very different receipt than a night out at a restaurant.
Digital Products
Under current California law, sales tax applies only to prewritten software delivered on a physical disc or other tangible media. Downloaded software, streaming services, and cloud subscriptions are not subject to sales tax.6Legislative Analysts Office. Lodging Is a Different Tax
Booking a room or short-term rental in Mammoth Lakes does not involve the 7.75 percent sales tax. Lodging is covered by the Transient Occupancy Tax, or “bed tax,” charged at 15 percent of the room rate.7Town of Mammoth Lakes. Transient Occupancy Tax Information The two taxes are independent and won’t appear stacked on the same charge.
Use Tax on Out-of-State Purchases
Buy something from an out-of-state retailer that doesn’t collect California tax, and you owe use tax at the same 7.75 percent rate. Use tax exists so shoppers can’t dodge state and local taxes by ordering from out of state.8California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California Use Tax Most large online retailers already collect California tax, so this mainly comes up with smaller out-of-state vendors and private-party purchases.
Individuals can report use tax on their California income tax return using the Franchise Tax Board’s worksheet or lookup table. If your taxable out-of-state purchases exceed $10,000 in a calendar year (excluding vehicles, vessels, and aircraft), you’re a “qualified purchaser” who must register separately with the CDTFA and file a use tax return by April 15.8California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California Use Tax Vehicles, vessels, and aircraft have their own reporting process and can’t be reported on an income tax return.
Selling in Mammoth Lakes: Permits and Filing
Any business selling physical goods in town needs a seller’s permit from the CDTFA before its first sale.9California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Your California Sellers Permit The permit is free, but the CDTFA may require a security deposit based on your projected sales volume. Registration runs through the CDTFA online portal and asks for your business structure, bank account details, and estimated income.10California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Do You Need a California Sellers Permit Realistic sales estimates matter because the CDTFA uses them to set your filing frequency.
Once your permit is active, the CDTFA assigns a filing schedule: monthly, quarterly, quarterly with prepayment, yearly, or fiscal yearly.11California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Filing Dates for Sales and Use Tax Returns Higher-volume sellers file more often. You report gross sales, subtract exempt transactions, and pay through the CDTFA portal. Electronic bank withdrawals are free; credit card payments carry a 2.3 percent processing surcharge.12California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Online Services – Make a Payment
Late Penalties
The CDTFA charges a 10 percent penalty for late filing and a separate 10 percent penalty for late payment, capped so the combined penalty won’t exceed 10 percent of the tax due for that period.13California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Interest, Penalties, and Collection Cost Recovery Fee Interest starts running immediately on any unpaid balance. Filing a zero-tax return in a period with no taxable sales costs nothing and avoids the late-filing penalty.
Records
Keep sales and use tax records for at least four years, including sales receipts, purchase invoices, resale certificates, bank statements, and point-of-sale data. If your POS system overwrites data before then, export and store it separately. Hold everything tied to an active audit or dispute until it is resolved, even beyond four years.14California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Sales and Use Tax Records If you accept resale certificates from buyers, verify the buyer’s seller’s permit at the time of sale and keep the certificate on file. Missing or expired resale certificates are a common trigger for audit assessments.
Out-of-State Sellers
Online sellers based outside California must register and collect California tax once their sales into the state exceed $500,000 in the current or prior calendar year, whether or not they have any physical presence here.15California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Use Tax Collection Requirements Based on Sales into California The rate collected is the rate at the buyer’s location, so shipments to Mammoth Lakes addresses are taxed at 7.75 percent.
