To get a Maryland court transcript, submit a written request to the court where your case was heard, using that court’s official form or the eScribers portal if the county uses one. Rates are capped statewide: $3.00 per page for a standard paper original, more if you need it fast. If the transcript is for an appeal, you have ten days from filing your notice of appeal to place the order, and missing that deadline can sink the appeal.
What You Need Before You Order
Every request asks for the same core details: the case number, the date or dates of the hearing, and the name of the judge or magistrate who presided. How to Submit the Request
Circuit Court
Circuit court transcript requests must be in writing. Most counties want their official Transcript Request Form, submitted to the court reporter assigned to the judge who heard your case.2Maryland Courts. After you submit, the court reporter or vendor sends back a cost estimate and deposit amount, usually within about a week. Work doesn’t start until you pay the deposit.3Maryland Courts. Howard County Circuit Court – Transcripts and Courtroom Audio Recordings
District Court
For District Court cases, send a letter or the official form (DCA-119) to the District Court location where the hearing was held.4Maryland Courts. District Court of Maryland – Transcripts and Recordings Note the boundary here: District Court transcripts are only prepared when you have appealed a civil judgment where the claim exceeds $5,000 (excluding interest, costs, and attorney’s fees). The transcript then goes to the circuit court hearing the appeal. A $75 deposit is due when you file the request, and you’ll be billed for the balance. What It Costs
All Maryland state court transcript rates are capped by a September 2021 Administrative Order from the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, issued under Maryland Rule 16-505.6Maryland Courts. Standard delivery, with no specific deadline:
- Paper original: $3.00 per page
- Paper original plus electronic copy: $3.75 per page
- First additional paper copy: $0.50 per page
- Second additional paper copy: $0.25 per page
A full day of proceedings can produce 100 to 300 pages, so even standard rates add up to several hundred dollars quickly.
Expedited Rates
Six rush tiers apply to the paper original. The first copy stays capped at $0.50 per page regardless of speed.
- 21-day delivery: $3.75 per page
- 15-day delivery: $4.50 per page
- 10-day delivery: $5.00 per page
- 5-day delivery: $6.00 per page
- Next business day by 9 AM: $7.00 per page
- Same day by 10 PM: $8.00 per page
One built-in protection: if you pay for a rush tier and the vendor delivers late, you’re only charged the rate matching the actual delivery time. Pay for 5-day service, get it in 10 days, and the 10-day rate applies.6Maryland Courts. Audio Recordings as a Cheaper Alternative
If you don’t need a formal typed transcript, a copy of the courtroom audio is far cheaper and faster. In District Court, a CD costs $15 per case and an electronic copy through Citrix ShareFile costs $10 per case.4Maryland Courts. Important boundary: audio does not substitute for a transcript on appeal. If your District Court civil case exceeds $5,000 and you’re appealing to the circuit court, the typed transcript is required.4Maryland Courts. Appeal Deadlines Under Rule 8-411
This is where self-represented appellants lose cases. Maryland Rule 8-411 sets strict deadlines for ordering the transcript once an appeal is in motion:
- Most appeals: order within ten days after the first notice of appeal is filed.
- Civil actions under Rule 8-205(a): within ten days after the court enters an order under Rule 8-206(c).
- Certiorari petitions under Courts Article ยง 12-305: within ten days after the petition is granted.
The court enforces these deadlines, not the reporter.7New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. Help Paying: The Transcript Assistance Fund
Maryland runs a Transcript Assistance Fund for appellants who can’t cover the cost, but the program is narrow. It applies only to appeals before the Appellate Court of Maryland that involve child custody or visitation.9Maryland Courts. Transcript Assistance Fund
To qualify, you must be self-represented or working with an attorney through a legal services program listed by the Maryland Legal Services Corporation, and your household income must fall within current MLSC guidelines. Through June 30, 2026, the limits are $40,070 per year for a single person, $77,059 for a family of four, and $110,964 for a household of ten.10Maryland Legal Services Corporation. To apply, get a cost estimate from the court reporter liaison in the circuit court where your case was decided, then submit the application form with copies of the order being appealed and the estimate. Restricted and Confidential Records
Some proceedings aren’t open to the public, and a transcript from one requires a court order first. Expunged, shielded, and sealed records are off-limits without judicial approval.11Maryland Courts. Access to Court Records Certain case types are restricted by default:
- Juvenile delinquency cases, which are confidential and disclosed only by court order on a showing of good cause12Maryland General Assembly. Maryland Code Courts and Judicial Proceedings 3-8A-27
- Child in Need of Assistance (CINA) cases
- Adoption and guardianship cases terminating parental rights
- Financial statements filed in spousal or child support proceedings
