Massachusetts State Police recruitment runs through a Civil Service examination, a physical fitness test, medical and psychological screening, a background investigation, and a 25-week residential academy. You need to meet the department’s age, citizenship, residency, education, and criminal-history standards before you can even sit for the exam, and each stage after that can end your candidacy. Plan on roughly a year from application to swearing-in if you clear every gate on the first attempt.
Who Can Apply
Massachusetts law requires every initial enlistment to the state police to come from an eligible list produced by a competitive examination.1General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 22C Section 11 Before you register, confirm you meet the baseline qualifications the department publishes.
- You must be at least 19 by the exam date and 21 by appointment to the academy, and no older than 34 on the last day of the application filing period.
- You must be a United States citizen by appointment.
- You must be a Massachusetts resident by appointment.
- You must hold a high school diploma or GED.
- You must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license by appointment.
- You must satisfy the department’s medical and psychological standards.
The age and residency deadlines attach to appointment rather than the exam date, so you have some lead time to establish Massachusetts residency or finish naturalization if those pieces aren’t in place yet.2Mass.gov. Eligibility to Become a State Trooper
What Disqualifies You
Criminal history is where most candidacies end. A felony conviction in any state or federal court is a permanent bar. So is a conviction for any controlled substance offense, a misdemeanor that resulted in jail time of any length, or a conviction for a crime punishable by more than one year of imprisonment.3Mass.gov. Disqualifications for State Police Recruit Candidates
Convictions for violent crimes, weapons offenses, and misdemeanor domestic violence disqualify you permanently. A conviction for operating under the influence disqualifies you if it happened twice at any point in your adult life, or once within seven years of your appointment date. Youthful offender and juvenile delinquency adjudications count under these rules too, which trips up applicants who assume a sealed juvenile record is invisible to the department.3Mass.gov. The Civil Service Exam
The state announces exam cycles periodically, and candidates register through the state’s online civil service portal. Timing for the state police exam varies year to year, so check the published schedule regularly; missing the application window means waiting for the next cycle.4Mass.gov. Civil Service Examination Schedule
The written exam tests cognitive ability, reading comprehension, and problem-solving relevant to police work. Your score sets your rank on the eligible list, and appointments are drawn from the top. Veterans get two points added to their exam score for placement purposes. Children of uniformed members killed in the line of duty are also placed on the eligible list if they pass.1General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 22C Section 11
There is a separate route for graduates of the state police cadet program. The colonel can appoint cadet graduates directly, but no more than one-third of any single recruit training class can come through this pathway.1General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 22C Section 11
What Comes After the Exam
Passing puts you on the eligible list. From there the department works candidates through fitness, medical, and background screening over several months.
Physical Fitness
The fitness assessment covers a 1.5-mile run, push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups, with run times adjusted by age and gender. A male candidate aged 20 to 29 must complete the run in 12:38. A female candidate in the same bracket gets 14:50. For ages 30 to 39 the required times are 13:04 for men and 15:38 for women.5Mass.gov. Becoming a State Trooper
Medical and Vision
Every candidate clears a medical examination. Vision standards require minimum corrected distant acuity of 20/30 in each eye, with uncorrected acuity of at least 20/200 in each eye. You need color perception for red, green, and amber. Corrective surgery such as radial keratotomy is accepted for distance vision. A psychological evaluation runs alongside the medical stage.5Mass.gov. Becoming a State Trooper
Background Investigation
Investigators verify your criminal history, education, employment, and military service, and they interview former supervisors, coworkers, neighbors, and family members. Inconsistencies between what you reported and what they find will end your candidacy. If a former employer gives dates that don’t match yours, that’s a credibility issue that is hard to recover from.5Mass.gov. Becoming a State Trooper
Documents to Have Ready
Gather paperwork well before the application window opens:
- Certified birth certificate to confirm age and citizenship.
- DD-214 if you served in the military, so investigators can verify discharge status and dates.
- Official college transcripts from every institution you attended.
- Names, addresses, and dates for all prior employers.
- Contact information for professional and personal references.
The 25-Week Academy
Candidates who clear every step receive an appointment to the Massachusetts State Police Academy for a 25-week program covering more than 90 courses.6Mass.gov. Recruit Training at the State Police Academy The academy is residential. Normal hours run Sunday 11:00 PM through Friday 5:00 PM, and recruits go home on weekends.7Mass.gov. State Police Academy
Classroom instruction covers criminal law, motor vehicle law, court procedures, ethics, evidence, constitutional topics including civil rights and First Amendment law, de-escalation, fair and impartial policing, diversity awareness, and community policing. The physical side includes firearms, self-defense, defensive driving, patrol procedures, and military drills.6Mass.gov. Recruit Training at the State Police Academy The department describes the training as mentally and physically challenging by design, and not everyone who starts the academy finishes it.5Mass.gov. Becoming a State Trooper Graduation is a formal ceremony where recruits are sworn in and receive their first assignment.
Pay, Pension, and Appearance Rules
The starting salary for a Massachusetts State Trooper is $80,212.60. That base figure does not include overtime, detail pay, or shift differentials. The department also provides health insurance, life insurance, tuition remission at participating colleges and universities, uniforms and equipment, and a deferred compensation plan.8Mass.gov. Life as a State Trooper
Retirement for troopers falls under Chapter 32. After at least 20 years of service you can elect to retire, even before age 55. The standard pension equals 60 percent of average annual compensation. Mandatory retirement is at age 65.9General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 32 Section 26
One rule catches candidates by surprise: tattoos, body art, and brands visible while wearing the summer Class B duty uniform must be removed before appointment. Covering them with sleeves or makeup does not satisfy the requirement. You can attend processing events with visible tattoos, but removal must be confirmed before you enter the academy. Factor the cost and timeline of removal into your plans early.
