Look Up a Moving Violation Through the RMV
If your ticket is a civil motor vehicle infraction — speeding, a stop sign, a marked lanes violation — the RMV’s online payment portal is where you find it. Once the citation loads, the screen shows the fine amount, the deadline to respond, and any late fees that have already been added. Those numbers matter, because your window is short.
What the Lookup Tells You About Your Deadline
You have 20 days from the date on the citation to either pay the fine or request a hearing. Paying closes the case but counts as an admission of responsibility, so the violation goes on your driving record. Do nothing for 20 days and you lose the right to a hearing. The RMV will send a notice for the full fine plus late and administrative fees, and continued nonpayment can suspend your license or right to operate.2General Court of Massachusetts. Look Up a Parking or Municipal Ticket
There is no statewide database for parking tickets. Each city and town handles its own, so the lookup starts by identifying the municipality that issued the ticket and going to its website — usually the Treasurer’s office or Police Department page.
Most municipalities use third-party payment processors. You search by ticket number or by license plate, which is useful if you never had the paper ticket in hand or already lost it. Expect a convenience fee on top of the fine if you pay by credit card.
Parking Tickets and the Non-Renewal Program
Massachusetts municipalities can report unpaid parking tickets to the RMV, which places a “mark” on the vehicle’s registration record. Look Up a Court Case on MassCourts
If a citation has moved into the judicial system as a formal court case, you use MassCourts at masscourts.org, the public access portal for the Massachusetts Trial Court. It covers pending cases, dockets, and hearing schedules.7Massachusetts Trial Court. Welcome Page
You can search four ways: by name, case type, case number, or ticket/citation number. Every search also asks you to pick the court department and court division. For a name search you enter last name and first name. For a case number search, capitalization, spacing, and leading zeros all have to match exactly.8Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MassCourts information is for reference only and is not the official court record. If you need a certified copy of a docket or filing, request it from the clerk’s office at the court handling the case.
Criminal Citations Aren’t Looked Up the Same Way
If your ticket is for a criminal motor vehicle offense — reckless driving, operating under the influence, leaving the scene — it doesn’t sit in the RMV portal waiting to be paid. You cannot pay a criminal citation online, by mail, or by phone. You must sign the citation and return it to the clerk-magistrate at the court listed on the front within four days of the violation. If a single citation includes both criminal charges and civil infractions, do not try to pay the civil portions separately. If You Can’t Find the Ticket Anywhere
Three explanations cover most empty searches. First, timing: the RMV takes at least 10 days to load a new civil citation, and searching before then returns nothing. Second, system: a parking ticket will never appear in the RMV portal, and a moving violation won’t appear on a city’s parking website. Third, status: once a matter has progressed into court, it moves off the RMV payment portal and onto MassCourts.
Match the ticket in your hand to the right system, wait out the processing window if the ticket is fresh, and if a search still comes up empty, call the agency named on the citation directly. The 20-day response clock on a civil infraction runs from the date on the ticket, not from the date the record shows up online, so a delay in the lookup does not extend your deadline.
