A Massachusetts driver’s license renewal can be done online, at an RMV Service Center, or at a participating AAA branch, starting up to one year before your birthday expiration and up to two years after it. The fee is $50 for a Class D or Class M license and $65 for a combined Class D/M, and you can keep a Standard license or switch to a REAL ID at no extra cost.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License The catches are worth knowing before you start: certain holds will block the transaction, a REAL ID requires an in-person visit with documents, and letting the license lapse for more than two years wipes out the option to simply renew.
When You Can Renew
Your license expires on your birthday, and it is valid for five years. You can begin the renewal a full year before that date, and the RMV also gives you a two-year window afterward. Renewing early does not shorten the next five-year cycle, so there is no reason to wait.
The two-year window is a hard cutoff. Once your license has been expired for more than two years, you cannot renew it. You start over: retake the learner’s permit written exam and the road test as a new driver would.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License And during that two-year grace period, the license is still expired. You cannot legally drive on it until you complete the renewal.
Standard License or REAL ID
At renewal, you pick one of two credential types. Both allow you to drive in Massachusetts. The difference is what else the card is accepted for.
A Standard license works as a driver’s license and as general identification. It does not meet the federal REAL ID Act of 2005, so you cannot use it alone to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal buildings.2Transportation Security Administration. About REAL ID If you carry a valid U.S. passport, that limitation may not affect you.
A REAL ID requires more documentation and an in-person visit, even if you start the application online. Bring originals or certified copies of:
- One document proving lawful presence, such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card.
- One document proving your Social Security number, such as your Social Security card, a W-2, or a pay stub showing the full number.
- Two documents proving Massachusetts residency, such as a utility bill, bank statement, lease, or mortgage statement showing your current address.
These requirements come from the RMV’s identification standards, not from the renewal transaction itself.3Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Massachusetts Identification (ID) Requirements If you already hold a REAL ID and your name and address have not changed, you can typically renew online without re-presenting documents.
The fee is the same for either credential, and upgrading from a Standard license to a REAL ID at renewal costs nothing extra.4Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. REAL ID in Massachusetts
Renewing Online
Most Class D and Class M drivers can renew through the RMV’s Online Service Center. You will need your license number, date of birth, last name, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License The system takes payment by credit or debit card and issues a receipt when the transaction goes through.
Online renewal is not available if:
- Your license is suspended or revoked.
- You have unpaid parking tickets, excise taxes, or EZ-Pass violations.
- You hold a limited-term license tied to the duration of your lawful presence.
- The RMV does not have a Social Security number on file for you.
- You are upgrading a Standard license to a REAL ID for the first time. You can start online, but you must finish at a Service Center.
After a successful online renewal, the new license arrives by mail at the address on file within 10 to 14 business days.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License Hold on to your receipt as proof of renewal until it comes.
Renewing In Person
If you need to renew in person, you can go to an RMV Service Center or to a AAA branch that offers RMV services. AAA locations require an active AAA membership.5Mass.gov. RMV Services at AAA Either option requires an appointment for license transactions, booked through the RMV website or, for AAA, through aaa.com/reservations.
The one exception is REAL ID: the RMV currently accepts walk-ins for REAL ID transactions at all Service Centers, and if staff cannot help you right away they will find a same-day slot or schedule you within a few days.6Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Ask the RMV
Bring your current license, any documents needed for a REAL ID, and a completed application (available on the RMV website or at the counter). Service Centers accept credit cards, debit cards, checks, money orders, and cash.
Fees
Renewal fees run by license class:
- Class D (passenger vehicle): $50
- Class M (motorcycle only): $50
- Combined Class D and M: $65
The fees apply equally to Standard licenses and REAL IDs.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License Limited-term licenses issued for fewer than five years based on the duration of lawful presence are prorated at $10 per year. All RMV license fees are non-refundable, so confirm your address and personal details before you pay.7Mass.gov. Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Fees
Under the Massachusetts HERO Act, the renewal fee is waived for veterans with a 100% disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, or those the VA has deemed unemployable due to a service-connected disability. The waiver does not cover permit fees, road test fees, or reinstatement fees.8Mass.gov. Disabled Veteran Fee and Tax Exemptions
Holds That Will Block Your Renewal
Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90, Section 22, the Registrar can block issuance of a license for several reasons, and the online system will tell you immediately if any of them apply to your record.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License The most common:
- Unpaid parking tickets or excise taxes reported by a city or town. Even one unresolved ticket can trigger a non-renew flag.
- Unpaid EZ-Pass tolls.
- A Department of Revenue non-renew status, which the RMV cannot override.
- An active license suspension or revocation. That is handled through reinstatement, not renewal.
To clear a hold, resolve the underlying issue with the responsible agency, whether that is a city clerk, MassDOT, or the Department of Revenue. Allow a few business days for the release to reach the RMV system before trying the renewal again.
Drivers 75 and Older
If you are 75 or older, you cannot renew online. State law requires an in-person visit that includes a vision check. You can satisfy the vision requirement one of two ways: take the screening at your appointment, or bring a completed Vision Screening Certificate filled out in advance by your eye doctor on the RMV’s standard form.9Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Driving on an Expired License
Driving after your license expires is a serious offense under Chapter 90, Section 10, with penalties that mirror those for driving after suspension, including fines and possible criminal charges. If you notice the license has lapsed, stop driving and complete the renewal first. You still have the two-year window to renew normally; miss it, and the renewal path closes and the exam and road test become mandatory.1Mass.gov. Renew Your REAL or Standard Passenger (Class D) or Motorcycle (Class M) Driver’s License
Situations That Aren’t a Standard Renewal
A few situations look like renewals but follow their own rules. If your license is suspended or revoked, reinstatement is a separate process with its own fees before any renewal can happen.10Mass.gov. Reinstate Your Driver’s License Commercial Driver’s License holders follow a different track that includes medical self-certification, and a Hazardous Materials endorsement requires a separate TSA background check and knowledge exam that can add more than 60 days to the timeline.11Mass.gov. Renew Your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Active-duty military members, spouses, and dependents stationed out of state can request a one-time temporary extension of up to 60 days past expiration, mailed to an out-of-state address, provided the license is not in non-renew status.12Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
