Massachusetts Form 355-7004 is the corporate excise extension payment voucher that business and manufacturing corporations file to get more time on their annual return. The extension is automatic: if you pay enough tax by the original due date and file the form electronically through MassTaxConnect, the Department of Revenue grants the extra time without reviewing a request. The payment is what makes the extension valid, and underpaying is the single most common way companies lose it.
Who Files Form 355-7004
Form 355-7004 covers corporations filing the standard excise returns: Form 355 (C-corporations), Form 355S (S-corporations), Form 355U (combined reports), Form 355SC, and SBC returns.1Massachusetts Department of Revenue. 2025 Massachusetts Corporate Excise Tax Forms and Instructions
Financial institutions, insurance companies, and urban redevelopment corporations use a different voucher, Form 355-7004-MISC, which applies to entities filing Forms 63FI, 63-20P, 63-23P, 121A, or 63-29A. The two forms do the same job but route differently inside the DOR’s system, so filing the wrong one causes processing problems.
How Much You Have to Pay
An extension is only valid if your payment by the original due date meets the greater of two amounts: 50 percent of the total tax ultimately due for the year, or the minimum corporate excise.2Massachusetts Department of Revenue. AP 604 – Extensions of Time to File Tax Returns Fall short of both and the DOR treats the extension as if it never existed, with penalties running retroactively from the original due date.
Two points trip people up here. First, the 50 percent is measured against your actual final liability, not your estimate at the time of filing. If you guess low and the real number comes in higher, the extension can be invalidated after the fact. Second, zero-dollar extensions are not allowed. Even a small estimated liability requires a payment.3Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Massachusetts DOR Tax Due Dates and Extensions
A federal extension does not extend your Massachusetts return. You have to file Form 355-7004 separately with the DOR even if the IRS has already granted you more time.3Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Massachusetts DOR Tax Due Dates and Extensions
Deadlines and How Long the Extension Runs
The original due date depends on your entity type, and the extension length depends on whether you file as part of a combined group.
- S-corporations filing Form 355S on a calendar year are due March 16, 2026. A valid extension moves the deadline to September 15, 2026.3Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Massachusetts DOR Tax Due Dates and Extensions
- C-corporations filing Form 355 on a calendar year are due April 15, 2026. A valid extension moves the deadline to October 15, 2026.3Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Massachusetts DOR Tax Due Dates and Extensions
- Most corporate excise taxpayers required to file a combined report get a seven-month extension rather than six.2Massachusetts Department of Revenue. AP 604 – Extensions of Time to File Tax Returns
Fiscal-year filers follow the same math: six months (or seven for combined report filers) from the original due date. The extension applies only to the filing deadline. The payment obligation stays tied to the original due date, and interest accrues from that date on anything unpaid.
The S-corporation deadline falls a full month before the C-corporation deadline. Confusing the two is an easy way to miss the window and void the extension before it starts.
Filing Through MassTaxConnect
Form 355-7004 must be filed electronically. There is no paper option.4Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Mailing Addresses for Massachusetts Tax Forms Filing happens through MassTaxConnect, the DOR’s online portal, or through approved commercial tax software. The e-file mandate is written into TIR 16-9, which also catches any corporation making an extension payment of $5,000 or more regardless of revenue.5Massachusetts Department of Revenue. TIR 16-9 – Expansion and Restatement of Electronic Filing and Payment Requirements
If your business does not already have a MassTaxConnect account, register before the deadline approaches. Setup requires your EIN, business start date, legal and mailing addresses, and contact information for owners or officers including their Social Security numbers.6Mass.gov. Register Your Business with MassTaxConnect Verification can take several business days, so this is not something to leave to the last afternoon.
Have the following ready when you log in:
- Your Federal Employer Identification Number.
- The taxable year end date for the return you are extending.
- Your estimated total excise liability for the year, which drives the 50 percent calculation.
- Any credits and estimated payments already applied during the year.
The worksheet moves through three fields: Tax Due (your estimated total excise), Credits (payments and credits already applied), and Balance Due (the net you owe with the extension). Balance Due has to be large enough to bring total payments up to 50 percent of the full liability or the minimum excise, whichever is higher. After submission, MassTaxConnect generates a confirmation number. Save it. That number is your proof the extension was filed on time. Payment follows as an ACH debit from your business bank account or a credit card charge through the portal.
What a Shortfall Costs You
If your payment is below both the 50 percent threshold and the minimum excise, the DOR voids the extension and two penalties apply from the original due date:
- A late-filing penalty of 1 percent of the tax due per month or partial month, capped at 25 percent.7Cornell Law Institute. Massachusetts Code 830 CMR 62C.33.1 – Interest, Penalties, and Application of Payments
- A late-payment penalty of 1 percent of unpaid tax per month, also capped at 25 percent.8Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Massachusetts Penalties and Interest Assessed by DOR
They stack. A C-corporation that was due April 15 and does not file until October faces six months of both.
Interest is separate and applies even when the extension is valid. The rate is the federal short-term rate set quarterly by the IRS plus four percentage points, compounded daily on any tax unpaid after the original due date.9General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 62C Section 32 Current rates are posted on the DOR site.10Massachusetts Department of Revenue. Interest on Your Massachusetts Tax Underpayment or Overpayment The practical move is to pay as much as you reasonably can with the extension rather than stopping at 50 percent. If your final liability might come in higher than your estimate, a small overpayment and a refund costs less than months of interest on an underpayment.
Mistakes That Void the Extension
A few errors come up again and again:
- Treating a federal extension as covering Massachusetts. It does not.
- Underpaying because the estimate was too low. The 50 percent is measured against actual final liability.
- Missing the S-corporation deadline by assuming it tracks the C-corporation date.
- Submitting a zero-dollar extension when any excise is owed.
- Using Form 355-7004-MISC when your return is Form 355 or 355S, or vice versa.
The mechanics of the form itself are simple. The expensive problems come from underestimating the liability or missing the original due date, not from anything the worksheet asks you to fill in.
