Massachusetts Permit Test: Eligibility, Documents, and Fees

The Massachusetts permit test is a 25-question multiple-choice knowledge exam you must pass to get a Class D learner’s permit. You need at least 18 correct answers within 25 minutes, and each attempt costs $30.1Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Apply for a Passenger (Class D) Learner’s Permit Questions come from the Massachusetts Driver’s Manual and lean heavily on state-specific rules, so general driving knowledge from elsewhere won’t carry you.

Who Can Take It

You have to be at least 16. Applicants under 18 need a parent, legal guardian, foster parent, or social worker to sign the application.2General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Code Chapter 90 – Section 8B Learner’s Permits

Before you can sit for the knowledge test, you have to pass a vision screening at the RMV. The baseline is 20/40 distant visual acuity in at least one eye (corrective lenses allowed), at least 120 degrees of combined horizontal peripheral vision, and the ability to tell red, green, and amber apart. Acuity between 20/50 and 20/70 can still qualify you, but with a daylight-only driving restriction.3Mass.gov. Medical Standards for Passenger (Class D) and Motorcycle (Class M) Drivers Licenses

Documents and Application

You cannot walk in and test on the spot. The application has to be submitted online first, and your identity documents verified in person at an RMV Service Center or an AAA location if you’re a AAA member.1Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. How many documents you bring depends on whether you want a REAL ID or a standard permit. A REAL ID-compliant permit requires four original documents: one proving lawful U.S. presence (valid passport or birth certificate), one verifying your Social Security number (Social Security card or W-2), and two proving Massachusetts residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease, or mortgage statement). Photocopies and digital images are rejected.5Mass.gov. What the Test Covers

Every question is drawn from the Massachusetts Driver’s Manual, which the RMV publishes for free download.8Mass.gov. First Time Driver? Start Here… The emphasis sits on three areas: alcohol and impaired driving laws, junior operator rules and their penalties, and general traffic rules including right-of-way, speed limits, and road sign identification.1Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. The alcohol and junior operator questions are where first-time test-takers tend to lose points. These rules are specific to Massachusetts, so if you’re relying on experience from another state or on general road sense, those sections are the ones to read closely. Pay particular attention to the penalty tables for junior operator violations.

The exam is offered in more than 35 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin (simplified and traditional), Haitian Creole, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Korean. American Sign Language is also available.1Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Apply for a Passenger (Class D) Learner’s Permit

Taking the Test Online or In Person

Once your documents are verified, you choose where to test.

In Person

Schedule an appointment through the RMV’s online reservation system. Bring your completed application, your original identity documents, and the $30 fee. The vision screening and knowledge test happen during the same visit, and the system scores your exam the moment you finish or time runs out.

Online

After the RMV processes your documents at a Service Center, you’ll get login credentials to take the exam from a home computer. The proctoring rules are strict:

  • Your webcam must stay on, and the system takes photos of you at random during the session.
  • No other adults, children, or pets can be in the room.
  • The Driver’s Manual, other browser windows, phones, and smartwatches have to be out of the room entirely.
  • You must use a desktop or laptop. Smartphones and tablets are not permitted.

If a photo doesn’t match the applicant on file, or the system detects another person in the room, the RMV can invalidate your results.1Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Apply for a Passenger (Class D) Learner’s Permit

Fees, Payment, and Retakes

The $30 fee applies to every attempt.9Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Fees At a Service Center you can pay with credit card, debit card, personal check, or money order. Online applicants have to use a credit or debit card.

If you fail, you pay the $30 again for each retake. The system tells you right away whether you passed or failed, but it won’t show you which specific questions you missed. There’s no diagnostic to study from, so broader review of the manual is the right response to a failed attempt, not guesswork about where you went wrong.

After You Pass

Passing the knowledge test gets you a learner’s permit, not a license, and the permit comes with hard limits. You cannot drive alone at any time. A licensed driver who is at least 21 and has at least a year of driving experience must be in the passenger seat whenever you’re behind the wheel.2General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Code Chapter 90 – Section 8B Learner’s Permits If you’re under 18, you also cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m. unless a parent or legal guardian with a valid license and at least a year of experience is in the car with you.10Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. Junior Operator License (JOL) Requirements

The permit itself is valid for two years from the date of issue, or until you receive your full license, whichever comes first. If it expires before you get your license, you’ll have to take the knowledge test and pay the fee all over again.2General Court of Massachusetts.
