Massachusetts Pharmacist License Renewal Requirements

To renew a Massachusetts pharmacist license, you need to complete 20 contact hours of continuing education for each calendar year of the cycle, pay the $150 biennial fee, and submit your renewal through the state’s ePLACE Portal before your registration expires on December 31 of the even-numbered year. Those are the core Massachusetts pharmacist license renewal requirements, and the rest is detail: what counts as CE, what extra hours apply if you compound or immunize, and what happens if the deadline slips past you.¹

When and How to Renew

Every pharmacist registration in Massachusetts runs on a two-year cycle that ends December 31 of each even-numbered year. To keep practicing without interruption, submit your renewal and the $150 biennial fee before that date.¹ The fee is set by the Commissioner of Administration under 801 CMR 4.00.²

Renewals go through the ePLACE Portal, which handles applications, payments, and license changes for the Division of Occupational Licensure.³ You’ll update your contact and employment information and confirm that your CE hours are complete. Incomplete or inaccurate entries can delay the renewal, so review before submitting.

The Board mails a written renewal notice with the application form on November 1 of the expiration year. That gives you roughly two months, which is not much room if you still owe CE hours. Treat CE as a year-round obligation, not a November project.

Continuing Education Hours

Every renewing pharmacist must complete at least 20 contact hours of CE each calendar year — 40 hours across the two-year cycle. At least 2 of the annual hours must cover pharmacy law, and the law hour doesn’t have to be Massachusetts-specific or taken live.¹⁴

The Board accepts credit from several sources: programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE), AMA PRA Category 1 Credit, and programs approved by any U.S. state board of pharmacy.⁴

Keep documentation of your completed CE hours for the most recent two full calendar years. The Board randomly audits renewed licenses, and if you’re picked, you have 7 days to produce your records. Missing that window, or coming up short on hours, can bring a fine of up to $1,000.¹

Extra CE for Specific Practice Areas

Some practice areas carry additional CE obligations. In most cases, the specialized hours are carved out of the standard 20, not added on top. The exception is CDTM.

Pharmacists who oversee or perform sterile compounding, or who practice in a pharmacy licensed under Section 39G or 39I, must devote at least 5 of their 20 annual contact hours to sterile compounding topics.¹
Pharmacists who oversee or perform complex non-sterile compounding, or who practice in a Section 39H pharmacy, must devote at least 3 of their 20 annual hours to that area.¹
Pharmacists with an active Collaborative Drug Therapy Management (CDTM) agreement must complete 25 contact hours per calendar year — the standard 20 plus 5 additional hours tied to the specific collaborative practice area. CDTM pharmacists with prescriptive authority also need at least 1 hour of pain management training every two years, which can count toward the extra 5.⁴
Pharmacists who physically administer immunizations or directly supervise immunizing activities must complete at least 2 contact hours of ACPE-approved, immunization-related CE every two years.⁴

Missing the December 31 Deadline

If the Board doesn’t have your completed renewal and fee by December 31 of the expiration year, your name is removed from the register.¹ From that moment, any practice of pharmacy is unlicensed practice and carries the penalties that go with it.⁵ The statute provides no grace period.

Reinstating a Lapsed License

A lapsed license can be reinstated, but the process costs more than staying current. To get back on the register, you have to provide proof of your fitness to practice and pay all accrued biennial renewal fees for the period the license was expired, plus a separate reinstatement fee.¹ Letting the license lapse does not save money; you owe the renewal fees you would have paid anyway, and more.

The statute doesn’t fix a dollar amount for the reinstatement fee; like the renewal fee, it’s set by the Commissioner of Administration. The longer the license has been expired, the more accrued biennial fees pile up. You’ll also need to show that you completed the CE credits you would have owed during the expired period, so paying back in isn’t enough on its own.

Active-Duty Military Exception

If you’re serving on active duty in the armed forces, your registration stays valid until 90 days after your release from active duty. The CE requirement also does not apply for the renewal cycle immediately before December 31 of an even-numbered year, provided you’re on active service after October 1 of that year.⁵
