MassTaxConnect is the Massachusetts Department of Revenue’s online portal for filing state tax returns and paying what you owe electronically.1Mass.gov. About MassTaxConnect Individuals use it to file personal income tax, schedule payments, request extensions, and amend prior returns. Businesses use it for sales and use tax, withholding, corporate excise, room occupancy, and other DOR-administered taxes. Once you have an account, most routine dealings with DOR — filing, paying, checking balances, receiving notices — happen in one place.
Setting Up Your Account
Individuals register with a Social Security Number or ITIN plus one verification item from filing history: the “income tax after credits” amount or refund amount from one of your last three Massachusetts returns, or a Letter ID from DOR correspondence inviting you to register.2Mass.gov. Create Your MassTaxConnect Individual Account That verification step is where most people stall. Pull a prior return before you start.
From the MassTaxConnect homepage, click “Create my Logon,” select that you’re an individual who has previously filed in Massachusetts, and follow the prompts to set a username and password.2Mass.gov. Create Your MassTaxConnect Individual Account If you’ve never filed a Massachusetts return, the path is different and may require additional identity documentation.
Businesses register with their Federal Employer Identification Number. The system links your profile to existing DOR records and pulls in every tax type already assigned to that FEIN.1Mass.gov. About MassTaxConnect Any business taxpayer registered with DOR is eligible to make electronic payments through the portal.3Mass.gov. Making Payments in MassTaxConnect
What You Can File and Pay
The platform covers the major Massachusetts business taxes — corporate excise, sales and use tax, withholding, and room occupancy excise, which now includes short-term rentals such as Airbnb listings — along with specialized obligations like deeds excise, cigarette and tobacco excise, marijuana retail taxes, and motor fuel taxes.1Mass.gov. About MassTaxConnect
Personal income tax filing is available if you were a full-year Massachusetts resident and have filed a Massachusetts return before. Part-year residents and nonresidents can use the platform for tax years 2023 and later, provided they’ve previously filed a Massachusetts return for a prior year.4Mass.gov. E-file and Pay Your MA Personal Income Taxes If you don’t meet those conditions, you’ll need commercial tax software or a paper return.
Filing a Return
Log in, select “File a Return” from the dashboard, choose the tax type, and pick the period. The input screens mirror the official DOR form, and the platform calculates your liability as you enter figures. Before you submit, a summary page shows the calculated tax due. Review it carefully. Once you submit, corrections require an amended return.
Filing frequency depends on the tax type and your estimated annual liability. For sales and use tax, businesses with an estimated annual liability above $1,200 file monthly, with returns due by the 20th of the following month. Vendors between $100 and $1,200 file quarterly, and those at $100 or less file annually, with the return due January 20th of the following year.5Mass.gov. 830 CMR 62C.16.2 Sales and Use Tax Returns and Payments Meals tax returns are filed monthly regardless of volume.
Making a Payment
EFT debit is DOR’s preferred method. You authorize DOR’s bank to pull funds from your account through the Automated Clearing House system, using your bank’s routing number and your account number. MassTaxConnect saves the bank details for next time. You can schedule a payment for a future date; DOR holds the request and sends it to your bank the day before the effective date.3Mass.gov. Making Payments in MassTaxConnect
The portal also accepts credit and debit cards through a third-party vendor, with convenience fees of 2.39% for credit cards and 2.09% for debit cards.3Mass.gov. Making Payments in MassTaxConnect On a $10,000 payment, the credit card fee is $239. For most taxpayers, EFT debit is the cheaper choice.
Estimated Payments
If you earn income that isn’t subject to withholding and expect to owe more than $400, you must make quarterly estimated payments. You generally need to pay at least 80% of your annual income tax liability before filing, through withholding, estimated payments, or a combination. Farmers and fishermen have a two-thirds threshold. Corporations must make estimated payments if they reasonably expect their corporate excise to exceed $1,000 for the tax year.6Mass.gov. Massachusetts DOR Estimated Tax Payments All estimated payments can go through MassTaxConnect.
Extensions and Amended Returns
You can file an extension through the portal. For personal income tax returns with no tax due, Massachusetts grants an automatic extension until October 15, 2026.7Mass.gov. Massachusetts DOR Tax Due Dates and Extensions
Corporate excise extensions depend on how you file. Filers not part of a combined report get an automatic six-month extension, but only if they’ve paid the greater of 50% of the total tax due or the minimum corporate excise by the original due date. Most filers required to participate in a combined report receive an automatic seven-month extension.8Mass.gov. AP 604 Extensions of Time to File Tax Returns Miss the payment requirement and the extension is void. Late filing penalties then apply as if you never requested one.
Amended personal income tax returns can be filed through MassTaxConnect if you originally e-filed through the platform and it supports the schedules your amendment needs. Otherwise, you amend on paper.9Mass.gov. Amend a Massachusetts Individual or Business Tax Return When you amend to reduce your tax, attach supporting documentation. Business returns can also be amended through the portal, and the system issues a confirmation number as proof of timely filing.
Payment Agreements
If you can’t pay in full, MassTaxConnect lets you set up a payment agreement online for balances of $10,000 or less. Log in, select “More,” and choose “Request a Payment Plan” under Collection Notices.10Mass.gov. MA DOR Payment Agreement Frequently Asked Questions Balances above $10,000 require contacting DOR directly. Interest continues to accrue while the plan is in place, so paying off the balance faster keeps the total cost down.
Late Filing and Payment Penalties
Massachusetts imposes separate penalties for filing late and paying late, and they stack. Filing late adds 1% of the unpaid tax per month or partial month, capped at 25%.11General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 62C Section 33 Paying late adds another 1% per month of the unpaid tax, also capped at 25%.12Mass.gov. AP 612 Interest and Penalties Three months late on both means 6% of what you owe before interest.
Interest runs on top. For 2026, the underpayment rate is 8% in the first quarter and 7% in the second, compounded daily.13Mass.gov. TIR 26-2 Interest Rate on Overpayments and Underpayments DOR sets the rate at the federal short-term rate plus four percentage points and adjusts it every quarter. If you can’t file on time but can pay, pay by the due date. Both penalties apply to unpaid tax, so paying limits the damage even when the return is late.
Managing Your Account
Your MassTaxConnect account includes a secure mailbox where DOR delivers notices, assessment letters, and other correspondence. Electronic delivery counts the same as paper mail, so check it regularly. The Profile section lets you update your mailing address, business name, and contact details without paper forms. Filing History gives you copies of submitted returns and confirmations, and you can see your current balance for each tax type along with a full record of past payments.
You can also request a Certificate of Good Standing or a Corporate Tax Lien Waiver directly, and verify sales or meals tax certificates for vendors.1Mass.gov. About MassTaxConnect Tasks that once required a phone call or a mailed letter now sit inside the account.
