The Maury County, TN sales tax rate is 9.75%. That total combines Tennessee’s 7% state sales tax with Maury County’s 2.75% local option tax, and it applies to most retail purchases anywhere in the county, including Columbia, Mount Pleasant, and the Maury County side of Spring Hill. Groceries are taxed at a lower combined rate of 6.75%, and large single-item purchases benefit from a cap that limits how much local tax you pay.
How the Rate Is Built
Tennessee sets a statewide sales tax of 7% that applies in every county.1Justia. How the Cap Works on Expensive Items
Maury County’s 2.75% local tax only applies to the first $1,600 of a single item’s price. Anything above that is free of local tax. On a $20,000 piece of equipment, the local tax tops out at $44 ($1,600 × 2.75%).2Justia. Tennessee Code 67-6-702 – Tax Authorized – Rates – Termination of Services Tax
Tennessee adds a separate state single article tax of 2.75% on the slice of the price between $1,600.01 and $3,200, which also caps at $44. Nothing above $3,200 carries that surcharge. The base 7% state tax, though, applies to the full purchase price with no cap.7Tennessee Department of Revenue. Single Article and Special Tax Rates
Put together, the full tax on a $20,000 single item in Maury County looks like this:
- State tax at 7% on $20,000: $1,400
- Local tax at 2.75% on the first $1,600: $44
- State single article tax at 2.75% on $1,600.01–$3,200: $44
- Total: $1,488
Without the caps, local plus single article tax on that purchase would run $1,100 instead of $88. The cap matters most for vehicles, farm equipment, and industrial machinery.
Does the Rate Change Between Columbia, Mount Pleasant, and Spring Hill?
No. The rate is 9.75% whether you shop in downtown Columbia, in Mount Pleasant, or in unincorporated rural parts of the county. None of the cities layer their own additional sales tax on top. Columbia’s city-level sales tax rate is 0%, and the combined rate in Mount Pleasant’s ZIP code (38474) is the same 9.75%.3Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. Maury County
Spring Hill is the one place to watch. The city straddles the Maury-Williamson county line. The Maury County portion charges the standard 9.75%, but Williamson County sets its own local rate, so a store on the Williamson side can ring up a different total. The store’s physical address is what determines the rate.
Online Orders and the Sales Tax Holiday
Buying online does not avoid the rate. Since October 2020, marketplace facilitators like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy have been required to collect Tennessee state and local sales tax on behalf of third-party sellers once the platform exceeds $100,000 in Tennessee sales over a 12-month period.8Tennessee Department of Revenue. Out-of-State Dealers and Marketplace Facilitators The tax is based on the shipping address, so deliveries to Maury County are taxed at 9.75%.
If you buy from a smaller out-of-state seller that doesn’t collect Tennessee tax, you technically owe consumer use tax at the same 9.75% rate on the purchase.9Tennessee Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Marketplace collection has made this situation much rarer than it used to be.
Tennessee also runs an annual back-to-school sales tax holiday that suspends both state and local sales tax on qualifying purchases, so purchases that would otherwise be taxed at 9.75% in Maury County are tax-free during that weekend. For 2026, the holiday runs July 24–26, and these items qualify:
- Clothing and school supplies priced at $100 or less per item
- Computers, laptops, and tablets priced at $1,500 or less
The caps apply per item, not per transaction. A $90 pair of shoes qualifies even in a $500 cart, but a $110 jacket is taxed in full. Every retailer in Maury County is required to honor the exemption during the holiday.
