A McAllen parking ticket is cheap if you handle it quickly and expensive if you don’t. A meter overtime citation is $4.00 when paid by 6:00 p.m. the next business day, and a standard improper parking citation is $15.00 when paid within 10 business days.1City of McAllen. Tickets Notice Miss those windows and the fine goes up, and ignoring the ticket long enough can mean an impounded vehicle, a Municipal Court warrant, or a block on your next registration renewal.
What You Owe and By When
McAllen’s parking fines are low, but the clock is tight.
- Overtime at an expired meter: $4.00 if paid by 6:00 p.m. the next business day; $7.00 after that.
- Improper parking: $15.00 if paid within 10 business days; $20.00 after that.
Partial payments aren’t accepted, so you pay the full amount in one transaction, and each citation is paid separately.1City of McAllen. Tickets Notice Downtown metered spaces run $0.50 an hour with a ten-hour maximum, which is why the overtime fine exists in the first place.
How to Pay
The quickest option is the city’s online payment portal, which accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. You’ll need the citation number from your ticket and your license plate. A service charge applies to each card payment, so the total runs slightly above the fine.2McAllen, TX – Municipal Online Services. McAllen, TX – Municipal Online Services

How to Appeal
If you think the citation was issued in error, file an appeal online within 15 business days of the issue date. Late appeals aren’t accepted. You can upload supporting evidence such as photos or diagrams, and the city asks that appeals be filed only when there’s a legitimate basis for disputing the ticket.1City of McAllen. Tickets Notice
Don’t pay the ticket first if you plan to appeal. Payment closes the case in the city’s system, and you lose the right to challenge it. If the appeal is denied, the city notifies you and you pay then.
For citations handled by Municipal Court rather than Downtown Services, a not-guilty plea has to be entered in person at the court. The online system doesn’t process not-guilty pleas.2McAllen, TX – Municipal Online Services. McAllen, TX – Municipal Online Services
If You Parked in a Disabled Space
This is a separate category and a much more serious one. Parking in a space reserved for people with disabilities without a valid placard or plate is a criminal misdemeanor under Texas law, not a regular parking ticket. First-offense fines run from $500 to $750, and penalties climb with each repeat:4State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 681.011 – Offenses
- Second offense: $550 to $800, plus 10 hours of community service.
- Third offense: $550 to $800, plus 20 to 30 hours of community service.
- Fourth offense: $800 to $1,100, plus 50 hours of community service.
- Fifth or later offense: $1,250, plus 50 hours of community service.
These citations are handled only through McAllen Municipal Court at (956) 681-2900. You cannot pay or appeal a disabled parking citation through the Downtown Services online portal.1City of McAllen. Tickets Notice
What Happens If You Ignore the Ticket
Letting a McAllen parking ticket sit sets off a predictable chain. The city can impound your vehicle for unpaid citations, adding towing and storage fees to what you already owe.1City of McAllen. Tickets Notice Municipal Court also issues warrants for unresolved citations, which means an active warrant can turn a routine traffic stop into an arrest.
After 60 days without payment, the city can send your fine to a third-party collection agency, which typically adds collection fees and brings letters, calls, and potential legal action to recover the debt.1City of McAllen. Tickets Notice
At the state level, Texas runs a Scofflaw program that lets county tax offices and the Department of Motor Vehicles refuse to renew your vehicle registration when you owe past-due fines. A fine counts as past due once 90 days have passed without payment.5State of Texas.
