Medical Assistant Requirements and Certification in Florida

Florida medical assistant requirements do not include a state license or registration, but they do include real rules: you must work under the direct supervision of a licensed physician, stay within the duties listed in Florida Statute 458.3485, and, in practice, hold a national certification because that is what employers hire on. The path in is a high school diploma, an accredited training program, and a certification exam.

Education and Training

You need a high school diploma or GED to begin. From there, the standard route is a postsecondary medical assisting program covering both clinical procedures and administrative work. Certificate and diploma programs run about a year; an Associate of Science degree takes roughly two.

Where you enroll matters. Only graduates of programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) qualify for the CMA (AAMA) exam, the credential most employers treat as the benchmark.1American Association of Medical Assistants. CAAHEP and ABHES Accredited Programs A non-accredited program closes that door and narrows your certification options. Florida has accredited programs across the state.

National Certification

Florida law does not require certification, but the job market effectively does. Three credentials dominate hiring, and each sets its own path to the exam.

CMA (AAMA)

The Certified Medical Assistant credential from the American Association of Medical Assistants has the strictest entry rule: you must be a student in, or graduate of, a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program.2American Association of Medical Assistants. Eligibility Requirements for the CMA (AAMA) Exam Work experience alone will not qualify you.

RMA (AMT)

The Registered Medical Assistant credential from American Medical Technologists offers more routes. You can qualify by finishing an accredited program with at least 720 hours of instruction (including 160 externship hours), through three years of full-time work experience within the past seven years, or through military medical training.3American Medical Technologists. CCMA (NHA)

The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant credential from the National Healthcareer Association is the most flexible. It requires a high school diploma or GED plus a medical assistant training program completed within the past five years, or one year of supervised work experience within the past three years.5National Healthcareer Association. Keeping the Credential Active

Certification is not one-and-done. The CMA (AAMA) recertifies every 60 months and requires 60 continuing education units over that period, with at least 30 from AAMA-approved sources spread across administrative, clinical, and general categories. If the credential lapses by more than three months, the continuing-education route closes and you have to retake the full exam.7American Association of Medical Assistants. Recertification

The RMA (AMT) is valid for three years, requires 30 certification continuation points from continuing education, employer training, or professional activities, and carries an annual fee to keep it active. The CCMA (NHA) also renews on a periodic cycle with continuing education.

Florida’s Supervision Rule

Florida recognizes medical assistants under Chapter 458 of the Florida Statutes but does not license or register them. Medical assistants do not appear on FL HealthSource alongside nurses and physicians. The statute instead defines the role and ties it to physician delegation.

Under Florida Statute 458.3485, a medical assistant is someone who assists in all aspects of medical practice under the “direct supervision and responsibility” of a physician.8Florida Senate. Florida Code 458.3485 – Medical Assistant The supervising MD or DO carries legal responsibility for what you do. Physician assistants can also supervise medical assistants under Florida Statute 459.022.9Online Sunshine. Florida Code 459.022 – Physician Assistants

Your scope is only as broad as what your supervising practitioner specifically delegates. A task appearing on the statutory list is not permission on its own; the physician has to determine you are competent to do it and assign it to you.

What You Can Do on the Job

Florida Statute 458.3485 lists the duties a medical assistant may perform under direct supervision, covering both clinical and administrative work:8Florida Senate. Florida Code 458.3485 – Medical Assistant

  • Taking vital signs, performing aseptic procedures, preparing patients for the physician’s care, performing venipunctures and nonintravenous injections, and observing and reporting patient signs or symptoms
  • Collecting routine laboratory specimens and performing basic laboratory procedures as directed by the physician
  • Administering medication as directed by the physician
  • Administering basic first aid, assisting with patient examinations or treatments, and operating office medical equipment
  • Performing dialysis procedures, including home dialysis
  • Performing general administrative duties required by the physician

The statute does not spell out prohibited tasks, but the delegation framework draws the line. Anything requiring independent clinical judgment sits outside the role. Diagnosing conditions, prescribing medications, and interpreting test results for patients are physician functions that cannot be handed off to an unlicensed staff member.

Background Screening Before Hire

Most Florida healthcare employers require a Level 2 background screening before you can start. Under Florida Statute Chapter 435, Level 2 screening uses electronic fingerprinting for both a statewide criminal history check through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and a national check through the FBI, plus a search of sexual predator and sexual offender registries in any state where you have lived in the preceding five years.10Online Sunshine. Florida Code Chapter 435 – Employment Screening

The statute lists a long series of disqualifying offenses. A conviction, guilty plea, or even an arrest awaiting final disposition for a listed offense can bar you from a screened healthcare position, and domestic violence offenses disqualify regardless of where they occurred.10Online Sunshine. Screening results have to be received and approved before your first day.

OSHA and HIPAA on the Job

Two federal rules shape daily practice. OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard requires training when you are first assigned to tasks with potential exposure to blood or infectious materials and at least once a year after that.11eCFR. 29 CFR 1910.1030 – Bloodborne Pathogens The annual training has to cover how bloodborne diseases spread, protective equipment, your employer’s exposure control plan, and how to report exposure incidents. Your employer provides the training and should offer the hepatitis B vaccine at no cost.

HIPAA governs the patient information you handle every shift. The Privacy Rule limits how protected health information can be used or disclosed, and the Security Rule requires safeguards for electronic records. In practice: keep patient information off casual conversations, secure files and lock screens, and access only records you need for the task in front of you. Penalties primarily fall on the employer, but an employee who knowingly violates HIPAA can face individual consequences. Most employers require annual HIPAA training.

Pay in Florida

The national median annual wage for medical assistants was $44,200 as of May 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,020 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $57,830.12Bureau of Labor Statistics.
