Merced County Self-Help Center: Booking, Location, and Fees

The Merced County Self-Help Center is a free court program that helps people without a lawyer prepare and file paperwork for common civil cases. A team of paralegals and an attorney staff the center, which operates by appointment only, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to noon.1Superior Court of California. What the Center Helps With

  • Divorce, legal separation, and annulment, including related custody and support issues
  • Domestic violence, civil harassment, and elder abuse restraining orders1Superior Court of California. Self-Help Center

  • Conservatorship of an adult who can no longer manage their own affairs
  • Small claims disputes up to $12,500 for individuals or $6,250 for businesses4California Courts. Small Claims in California
  • Landlord-tenant matters, including unlawful detainer (eviction) cases for either side
  • Fee waiver applications for court filing fees

How to Book an Appointment

There are no walk-ins. Every visit starts with an email or a phone call, not a trip to the courthouse.1Superior Court of California. Self-Help Center The process runs in three steps:

  1. Contact the center and describe your legal issue. Staff decide whether your case type is one they handle.
  2. If it is, they email you the forms and packets you’ll need, often with highlighted fields to guide you, along with a scheduling link.
  3. At your appointment, a staff member reviews your completed documents for accuracy and procedural completeness before you take them to the clerk’s office to file.

Where the Center Is Located

The main office is in Room 1400 of the Ogletree Jr. Courthouse at 2260 N Street, Merced, CA 95340. A second location operates inside the Robert M. What to Bring

Coming prepared is the difference between one appointment and several. Have the following ready:

  • Full legal names and current mailing addresses for everyone involved in the case
  • The case number and copies of any existing court orders, if your case is already open

  • Supporting documents specific to your case, such as pay stubs for child support or a lease for an eviction

Keep names, dates, and addresses consistent across every form. Small mismatches are a common reason the clerk’s office rejects filings. The person starting the case is the Petitioner; the other party is the Respondent.

Filing Fees and Waivers

The center’s help is free, but the court charges to file the case. A divorce petition runs $435 to $450.6California Courts. If you can’t afford the fee, form FW-001 asks the court to waive it. You qualify automatically if you receive Medi-Cal, food stamps, SSI, or certain other public benefits.   • 1 person: $2,660
  • 2 people: $3,606.67
  • 3 people: $4,553.33
  • 4 people: $5,500
  • 5 people: $6,446.67
  • 6 people: $7,393.33

Add $946.67 for each additional person past six. Even if your income is higher, you can still apply by showing that paying court fees would keep you from covering rent, food, and utilities. The Self-Help Center helps with the waiver paperwork as part of a regular appointment.

What the Center Can’t Do

The distinction between legal information and legal advice matters here. Staff can explain what a form asks for, walk you through the procedural steps, and lay out your options. They will not tell you which option to choose or build a strategy for winning your case.9California Courts. Court-Based Self-Help Services

Staff work for the court, so they stay neutral and can help both sides of the same case. That neutrality has two practical consequences. Nothing you tell them is confidential; there’s no attorney-client privilege.9California Courts. Court-Based Self-Help Services And staff cannot appear in court with you, speak to the judge on your behalf, or represent you. If a private attorney is already on record in your case, the center will usually decline to assist, since the program exists for people without representation.

For straightforward matters like an uncontested divorce, a small claims case, or a fee waiver request, the procedural guidance alone can save weeks of delays caused by rejected filings.

Before You Enter the Courthouse

Everyone entering either courthouse goes through security screening. Weapons of any kind, pepper spray, cameras and recording devices, glass containers, scissors, and several other items are prohibited, and the court and sheriff’s office will not hold them for you.10Superior Court of California.
