Michigan CLE Requirements: Who Must Comply and Where to Enroll

Michigan does not have general continuing legal education requirements. An attorney admitted to the State Bar of Michigan can keep a license in good standing without completing any CLE hours, which puts Michigan in a small minority of states.1American Bar Association. The One Group That Does Have Mandatory CLE

Attorneys who accept assigned criminal cases for people who cannot afford counsel fall under the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission’s minimum standards. MIDC Standard 1 requires at least twelve hours of continuing legal education each calendar year, measured from January 1 to December 31.2Michigan Indigent Defense Commission. The hours must be relevant to criminal defense. Attorneys with fewer than two years of criminal defense experience in Michigan also have to complete a basic skills acquisition class of at least sixteen hours spread over multiple days; those hours count toward the annual twelve.3Michigan Indigent Defense Commission. Why Most Michigan Attorneys Still Take CLE

No tracking from the state does not mean no consequences for falling behind. Several pressures continue to push Michigan lawyers toward regular training:

  • The Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct require competent representation. An attorney who stops keeping up in a changing practice area can face a disciplinary complaint on competence grounds whether or not CLE hours are tracked.
  • Malpractice insurers consider an attorney’s education and training history, and a thin record can weaken the defense of a claim.
  • Attorneys licensed in Michigan and in another state still have to meet that other state’s mandatory CLE rules. Michigan’s silence does not excuse the obligation elsewhere.
  • Firms, government offices, and courts in Michigan often expect regular training, and some employers set internal CLE benchmarks as a condition of continued employment.

Where to Find CLE in Michigan

The Institute of Continuing Legal Education, affiliated with the University of Michigan Law School, is the state’s primary CLE provider. ICLE runs live seminars, maintains an on-demand audio and video library, and publishes practice-area guides across most areas of Michigan law.

The State Bar of Michigan’s Practice Management Resource Center offers seminars on both substantive law and practical skills such as fee-setting and legal technology. Local and specialty bar associations around the state host their own programs as well, and these are often a good source of lower-cost or free hours for attorneys who want to stay current without a mandate telling them to.

The Short Version

If you handle indigent defense work in Michigan, plan on twelve hours of criminal-defense CLE every calendar year, with an added sixteen-hour basic skills class in your first two years.2Michigan Indigent Defense Commission.
