Training You Have to Certify

What Happens After You File
You get a receipt when you file, and it has legal force, not just confirmation value. If your current license expires while the renewal is processing, carrying that receipt together with your expired CPL card gives you the same authority to carry concealed as the license itself, until the new license arrives or the application is denied.1Michigan Legislature. If your license was already expired when you filed, the receipt works differently. It does not act as a license right away. What Can Block a Renewal
The background check on renewal looks at the same disqualifying conditions as an initial application. Any of the following results in a denial:
- A felony conviction or pending felony charge, in Michigan or any other state.
- Certain misdemeanor convictions involving firearms, assault, or controlled substances, if they occurred within the past three or eight years depending on the offense.
- Court-ordered commitment or adjudication under the Mental Health Code or the Estates and Protected Individuals Code.
- An active personal protection order under Michigan’s Revised Judicature Act.
- An active order under Michigan’s extreme risk protection order act.
- A dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces.
- A federal firearms prohibition under Michigan Penal Code Section 750.224f.

If Your Renewal Is Denied
A denial arrives as a notice of statutory disqualification from your county clerk. If you believe it’s wrong, you have 21 days from the date of the decision to file an appeal in the circuit court of the county where you live. The appeal can challenge the disqualification itself, a failure by the clerk to provide a receipt, or a failure to issue the license within the required timeframe. Serve a copy of your claim of appeal on all parties and the county clerk by first-class mail.
