What PATH Actually Covers
PATH provides employment-related support services to participants receiving Family Independence Program (FIP) cash assistance who are working toward self-sufficiency. Vehicle repair and maintenance is one of those support services, available for a car the participant uses to get to program activities or maintain employment.2GST Michigan Works!. PATH FAE&T Support Services Policy The repair has to be necessary to keep you in your work activities, job search, or approved training. Cosmetic fixes and convenience upgrades do not qualify.
PATH is run through local Michigan Works! agencies in partnership with MDHHS. Payments go directly to the mechanic or vendor, not to you, and the repair must be authorized before work starts. Paying for the repair yourself and asking for reimbursement afterward generally does not work. Dollar limits vary by local Michigan Works! agency and available funding, so confirm the cap and whether your shop is an approved vendor before you commit. Major repairs may require prior approval from MDHHS before your service provider can authorize them.
Who Qualifies
Because PATH vehicle assistance is tied to FIP, you have to meet FIP eligibility first. Across MDHHS assistance programs, countable cash assets generally cannot exceed $15,000 for households of one through six people. - A current Michigan driver’s license in your name.
- Vehicle registered in your name or the name of someone in your immediate household.
- Valid, current license plates on the vehicle.
- Proof of current no-fault insurance meeting Michigan’s minimum requirements.
- A repair that is genuinely needed to keep the vehicle safe and operable for getting to work or program activities.
How to Request the Help
If you are already enrolled in PATH, go straight to your Michigan Works! service provider. They handle the vehicle repair authorization directly and can tell you what your local office will cover.
If you are not yet in the system, the starting point is the MDHHS-1171 Assistance Application, a single form that covers cash assistance, food assistance, SER, and other programs.4Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. MI Bridges You can also submit a paper application at a local MDHHS county office. A specialist may call you to schedule a phone interview.
Get your paperwork together before you start. For a vehicle repair request, bring a detailed written estimate from a mechanic describing what needs to be fixed and why, plus your driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of current insurance, and verification of your employment or training schedule. Missing documents are the most common reason files stall.
If You Are Denied
You have 90 calendar days from the date on the written denial notice to request an administrative hearing.6Michigan Department of Health & Human Services. Read the denial notice closely first: it names the specific policy reason for the decision, which tells you what to prepare for at the hearing.7Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The 10-day rule matters if you are already receiving benefits and MDHHS issues a negative action notice. File your hearing request within 10 calendar days and your benefits continue at the previous level until the hearing decision. File between day 11 and day 90 and you still get your hearing, but benefits stop in the meantime. For a first-time application denial, benefits do not continue pending the hearing no matter how fast you file.
