What Appears on the Front
Every compliant Michigan license carries the same core data required by the REAL ID Act: full legal name, date of birth, gender, license number, digital photograph, principal residence address, and signature.2Department of Homeland Security. Driving restrictions appear as coded notations. Commercial drivers see additional codes: a vehicle group letter (A, B, or C) indicating the weight class the driver is authorized to operate, along with endorsements for passengers, hazardous materials, or other specialties.4Michigan Department of State. The redesigned cards Michigan began issuing in 2024 use a two-line name format that accommodates longer names, display the Michigan Coat of Arms, and print the names of the five Great Lakes in multicolored text that appears when the card is tilted.5Michigan Department of State. How to Read Your License Number
Michigan encodes the license number using a modified Soundex system, a phonetic coding method originally developed in the early 1900s for census work. The number runs 11 or 13 characters, always a single letter followed by digits.
The first character is the first letter of your last name. The next three digits are a Soundex code built from the remaining consonants of that surname. The mapping works this way:
- B, F, P, V → 1
- C, G, J, K, Q, S, X, Z → 2
- D, T → 3
- L → 4
- M, N → 5
- R → 6
Vowels and the letters H, W, and Y are dropped. If the surname runs out of consonants before three digits are filled, zeros pad the rest. Double letters and adjacent consonants that produce the same code collapse into a single digit.
The digits after the surname code encode your first name, middle initial, and birth year through additional formulas. The final digits act as a tiebreaker for people with similar names and birth dates. That structure is why an officer running your number at a traffic stop pulls up your record almost instantly.
Standard, REAL ID, and Enhanced Markings
Michigan issues three license types, and a small graphic in the upper right tells you which you’re holding. A REAL ID-compliant license shows a gold star set inside a Michigan-shaped silhouette. An Enhanced Driver’s License carries a waving American flag graphic on the front. The enhanced card can be used in place of a U.S. passport when re-entering the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean.7Michigan Department of State. Veteran and Organ Donor Symbols
Eligible veterans can add the word “VETERAN” in red lettering to the card. Qualifying requires discharge documentation such as a DD214 showing honorable or general discharge, and the designation can be added at any Secretary of State office or by mail.9Michigan Department of State. A red heart symbol identifies a registered organ donor. When you enroll during issuance or renewal, the heart prints directly on the card. When you enroll between renewals, the Secretary of State mails a heart-shaped sticker for your current card, and the printed symbol appears on the next renewal.10Michigan Department of State. Security Features That Prove the Card Is Real
The current Michigan card layers several anti-counterfeiting features. A laser-engraved ghost image, a smaller semitransparent copy of the holder’s photograph, sits on the front.
