Michigan Historic Plates: Eligibility, Insurance, and Driving Rules

Michigan historic license plates are a special registration for collector vehicles that are at least 26 model years old, owned purely as collector’s items, and driven only for club events, shows, parades, and similar activities rather than everyday transportation. The registration costs $30, stays valid for ten years, and comes in two flavors: a standard historical plate issued by the Secretary of State, or an authentic year-of-manufacture plate that lets you display a genuine vintage Michigan plate from the car’s era.¹²

Which Vehicles Qualify

Michigan law defines a historic vehicle as one that is over 25 years old, owned solely as a collector’s item, and used only for club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and similar purposes rather than general transportation.³ The Secretary of State applies that rule by subtracting the model year from the current calendar year, so a vehicle needs to be at least 26 model years old to qualify. In 2026, that puts model year 2000 and older vehicles in eligible territory.¹

Cars, trucks, motorcycles, and trailers can all qualify. The ownership requirement is the part that trips people up. This isn’t a plate for a second car you drive on nice weekends. When you apply, you certify under your signature that the vehicle is owned and operated solely as a historic vehicle and that you’ve inspected it and found it safe to drive on Michigan highways.² There’s no state inspection. The certification is on you.

Historical Plates and Authentic Plates

Michigan offers two plate options, and the choice affects both cost and how you apply.¹

Standard Historical Plate

The standard plate is issued by the Secretary of State and reads “Historical Vehicle — Michigan” with a registration number. It costs $30 and can be ordered by mail or in person at a Secretary of State office. A personalized version with up to seven characters runs $150 and can only be ordered in person.²

Authentic Year-of-Manufacture Plate

If you own an original Michigan license plate from your vehicle’s model year, you can register it as an authentic plate and actually display it. The plate must be a same-year, general-use Michigan plate in the correct colors for that year. Reproductions and remanufactured plates aren’t allowed, and neither are government, law enforcement, dealer, disability, or other special-purpose plates. Authentic plates cost $35, cannot be personalized, and can only be applied for by mail.¹

One narrow point for owners of vehicles from 1984 through 2006: the blue plates with white letters from that period can be registered as authentic plates as long as the plate displays a Michigan tab matching the vehicle’s model year. The 1984 plate is the exception, since tabs weren’t issued until 1985.¹

How to Apply

Whichever plate you’re after, you complete the Application for the Michigan Historical License Plate (Form BDVR-96). Both plate types require the same core documents:¹

Proof of ownership. A copy of the Michigan title is preferred. If you don’t have the title, a previous registration works.
Proof of Michigan No-Fault insurance. Out-of-state policies are not accepted.
Fee payment: $30 for a standard historical plate, $150 for a personalized version, or $35 for an authentic plate. Checks are payable to the State of Michigan.

For authentic plates, you also include a color photograph, color scan, or color photocopy of the vintage plate. Don’t mail the plate itself, just the image. Authentic plate applications go by mail only, to the Michigan Department of State in Lansing. Standard historical plates can be applied for by mail or at any Secretary of State office. Personalized versions require an in-person visit.¹

When You Can Drive a Historic Vehicle

Most of the year, historic vehicles are limited to club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, car shows, and similar events. Commuting, errands, and general transportation are off-limits.³ Trips to and from a repair shop are considered consistent with preserving the vehicle and are allowed year-round.

Then there’s the summer window. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the use restrictions are suspended entirely. During that stretch you can drive a historic vehicle anytime, anywhere, for any reason.¹ Roughly three months of unrestricted driving, then back to events and maintenance for the rest of the year.

Insurance

Michigan requires No-Fault insurance on every vehicle driven on its highways, and historic vehicles are no exception. The Secretary of State will not process a plate application without proof of a Michigan No-Fault policy; out-of-state policies are specifically rejected.¹ The policy must include personal injury protection, property protection, and residual liability coverage.⁴

Many collector owners choose specialty policies that offer agreed-value coverage. A standard auto policy pays out a totaled vehicle at depreciated market value, which can fall well short of what a rare classic is actually worth. Agreed-value coverage locks in a specific dollar amount when the policy is written, so a total-loss payout is the agreed figure minus your deductible. Because historic vehicles are driven sparingly, these specialty policies often cost less than standard auto coverage as well.

Ten-Year Registration and Renewal

The historic registration lasts ten years and expires on April 15 of the tenth year after issuance. Standard Michigan registrations expire annually on the owner’s birthday, so paying $30 once for a full decade is a genuine benefit of the program. Renewal repeats the original process: submit the application, pay the $30 fee, and certify that the vehicle still meets the historic vehicle requirements.²

Selling the Car or Buying Another

The historic registration is tied to the owner, not the vehicle, but it can move between historic vehicles you own. If you sell one collector car and buy another, you can transfer the existing historic registration to the new vehicle by completing a transfer application and paying a fee.²

When you sell a historic vehicle to someone else, your registration stays with you. The buyer applies for their own historic plate from scratch, with a new application, documentation, and fee. As with any Michigan vehicle sale, you provide the buyer with a properly assigned title.

How the Registration Can Be Revoked

The Secretary of State can revoke a historic vehicle registration for three reasons: the owner fails to comply with the registration requirements, the vehicle is used outside the permitted categories, or the vehicle is no longer safe to operate on Michigan roads. Before revoking, the Secretary of State must show cause and give the owner an opportunity to be heard.²

Losing historic status means re-registering under standard rules, which brings higher annual fees and yearly renewal. Michigan law also allows the Secretary of State to cancel or suspend any vehicle registration when the owner has made unlawful use of the registration certificate or plate.⁵ Lending a historic plate to someone whose vehicle wouldn’t qualify, or putting it on a different vehicle than the one it was issued for, can trigger those broader penalties.
