Have This Ready Before You Call
The help desk staff can move faster when you have identifiers in front of you. Pull together what you have that fits your situation:

- Your National Provider Identifier, the 10-digit number issued through the federal NPPES system. Most provider types need one; certain individual direct care workers are exempt.4State of Michigan. Provider Enrollment

- Your current, unrestricted Michigan professional license number if you are a clinical provider.

Checking Application Status
A complete CHAMPS application takes roughly one to two weeks to process.7State of Michigan. Medicaid Provider Manual – General Information for Providers Your Domain Administrator (the person who submitted the application) can log in and monitor progress using the Application ID, which usually answers the question without a phone call.8State of Michigan. SIGMA and CHAMPS Coordination
Organizational providers must register with SIGMA Vendor Self-Service at michigan.gov/sigmavss before starting the CHAMPS application. Wait three to five business days after finishing SIGMA registration before you try to enroll in CHAMPS. Trying sooner often triggers a validation error, and that is one of the most frequent reasons people end up on the phone.2State of Michigan. Retroactive Effective Dates
If you have been providing services and need enrollment to cover past dates, ask about a retroactive effective date. Michigan allows backdating up to one year from the date the request is received, provided your license or certification was active for the whole retroactive period.7State of Michigan. The request goes in during the application itself, so raise it before you submit if possible.
Application Fee Questions
Institutional providers pay a $750 application fee for calendar year 2026 at initial enrollment, revalidation, and when adding a new practice location.9Federal Register. If you are unsure whether the fee applies to your provider type, that is a reasonable question for the help desk.
Denials and Appeals
The enrollment help desk does not handle appeals. If your application has been denied or your enrollment terminated and you want to challenge that decision, you have 30 calendar days from the notice date to submit a written hearing request. Missing the 30-day window generally forfeits your right to a hearing on that denial, so treat it as a hard deadline.
One Boundary Worth Knowing
Calling the provider enrollment line will not help with beneficiary eligibility, MCO contracting, or claim payment disputes. The help desk works on screening and enrollment in CHAMPS. Enrolling in CHAMPS does not by itself put you into a Managed Care Organization’s network; if you serve only MCO patients, your CHAMPS enrollment is used for federal screening and does not change your MCO relationship.12Department of Health & Human Services. Providers Must Enroll in the Michigan Medicaid Program MDHHS will not pay claims for services delivered by unenrolled providers, though, so keeping your CHAMPS record active matters even when you bill only through an MCO. Before submitting claims, use the Provider Verification tool in CHAMPS to confirm that every billing, rendering, ordering, and referring provider on the claim is enrolled and active on the date of service.
