Michigan REAL ID Driver’s License: Documents, Fees, and Alternatives

Michigan REAL ID requirements kicked in at TSA checkpoints and federal buildings on May 7, 2025. If you want to fly domestically or enter a federal facility using your Michigan driver’s license or state ID, the card has to carry a REAL ID star. Getting one means an in-person visit to a Secretary of State office with proof of citizenship or legal presence, and if you time it with your normal renewal there’s no added cost.

Check Your Card Before You Do Anything Else

You may already be set. Michigan has used two REAL ID markings. Older blue-and-green cards show a star inside a gold circle, usually in the upper right. Newer cards show a star inside a gold outline of the state of Michigan.1Michigan Secretary of State. NEWS RELEASE: If Your License or ID Has a Star, You Are REAL ID Ready Either star means you’re compliant.

No star means a standard card, which TSA won’t accept and federal facilities won’t honor. That’s the card you need to convert.

When You Actually Need One

The REAL ID Act applies to “official purposes”: boarding federally regulated commercial flights, entering federal facilities, and entering nuclear power plants.2Department of Homeland Security. REAL ID Act In day-to-day terms, you need one to fly domestically or to visit places like a military base or federal courthouse. It applies to anyone 18 or older.3Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint

You do not need a REAL ID to drive, to vote or register to vote, or to apply for federal benefits like Social Security or veterans’ programs. A standard Michigan license still covers everyday driving.4Department of Homeland Security. ID Requirements for Federal Facilities If you don’t fly and don’t visit federal buildings, converting is optional.

If you do show up at a TSA checkpoint without a compliant ID, you won’t automatically be turned away. TSA runs an alternative verification called ConfirmID that costs $45 per use, plus expect extra screening time.5Transportation Security Administration. About TSA ConfirmID

What to Bring to the Secretary of State

If you’re converting an existing Michigan license or ID, bring three things in original form. Photocopies and faxes are not accepted.6Michigan Department of State. REAL ID

  • Your current Michigan driver’s license or state ID.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence. A valid U.S. passport or passport card works. So does a certified birth certificate from the vital records office of your birth state (it must carry a certification statement, the registrar’s signature, and a seal or stamp). A Certificate of Naturalization, a Certificate of Citizenship, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad also qualifies.
  • Name-change records if the name on your citizenship document doesn’t match your current legal name. A marriage certificate or court order typically bridges the gap.

The branch verifies your documents with the issuing agencies, and that verification can sometimes stretch past one day.6Michigan Department of State. REAL ID

If You’re Not a U.S. Citizen

Non-citizens show proof of legal presence instead of citizenship. Accepted options include a valid Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), a valid foreign passport paired with a U.S. visa and Form I-94 entry evidence, or a valid Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766).6Michigan Department of State. REAL ID F-visa students also need Form I-20; J-visa holders need Form DS-2019. If your authorized stay is temporary, you’ll get a limited-term card that expires with your immigration status.

First-Time Applicants

If you’ve never held a Michigan license or ID, you’ll also need proof of your Social Security number (a Social Security card or W-2 works) and two documents showing your Michigan address, such as utility bills, bank statements, or mortgage documents dated within the last 90 days. The Secretary of State website has a document selector that confirms exactly what you need before you go.

Booking the Visit, Fees, and How Long It Takes

Conversion has to happen in person at a Secretary of State branch. Appointments can be booked through the Secretary of State website or by calling 888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424), up to six months out. Walk-ins get fit into the next opening, sometimes same-day, sometimes the next business day. A scheduled visit usually runs about 20 minutes.7Michigan Department of State. Scheduling an Office Visit

Costs are modest. There is no extra charge to add REAL ID compliance when you renew on your normal cycle: a standard driver’s license renewal is $18. Converting outside your renewal window is a $9 correction fee for a license, or $10 for a state ID card.6Michigan Department of State. REAL ID8Michigan Department of State. You’ll get a new photo at the counter and leave with a temporary paper document. One important catch: that paper is not accepted at TSA checkpoints. Your permanent card arrives by mail and can take up to 30 days, so convert well before any planned travel. If 30 days pass and nothing arrives, contact the Secretary of State.

Ways to Skip the Conversion

REAL ID is one option, not the only one. TSA accepts several other IDs for domestic flights, so if you already carry one of these, you don’t have to convert your license:3Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint

  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. military ID, including dependent IDs
  • Permanent resident card
  • Foreign passport
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential
  • Federally recognized tribal ID
  • Veteran Health Identification Card

Michigan also issues an Enhanced Driver’s License, marked with “Enhanced” at the top and a U.S. flag icon. It contains an RFID chip storing a reference number (no personal information) that Customs and Border Protection uses at crossings. The enhanced license satisfies REAL ID at TSA checkpoints and also works in place of a passport for land and sea re-entry from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. It doesn’t substitute for a passport on international flights. A first-time enhanced license is $45, renewal is $38, and replacement is $24.9Michigan Department of State. Enhanced License and ID

What About Kids

TSA does not require travelers under 18 to show identification for domestic flights when they’re with an adult.3Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint You don’t need to get your child a REAL ID for family travel inside the United States. For unaccompanied minors, airline policies vary, so check with the carrier.
