Michigan Real ID vs Enhanced License: Costs, Uses, and Who Qualifies

The short answer on Michigan Real ID vs. Enhanced License: both cards satisfy the federal requirement to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building, but only the Enhanced License also gets you back across the U.S. border by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean. The Real ID is cheaper and easier to obtain; the Enhanced License costs more and is available only to U.S. citizens, but it can replace a passport for driving or boating trips into Canada.¹

What Each Card Actually Does

A Real ID-compliant Michigan license or state ID meets the minimum federal standard set by 6 CFR Part 37. That means you can use it to board a domestic flight, enter a federal facility, or access a nuclear power plant without carrying a passport.² It is not a travel document. Drive to Windsor for the day with only a Real ID in your wallet and you will not get back into the United States without a passport or passport card.

An Enhanced License does everything a Real ID does, and it also functions as a border-crossing document under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. You can use it to re-enter the United States at any land or sea port of entry when returning from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean.¹ Michigan is one of only a handful of states that issues one.

One limit surprises people: the Enhanced License does not work for international air travel. If you fly to Toronto or Cancún, you still need a passport. The border-crossing feature applies only at land and sea ports.³

Enhanced Licenses are automatically Real ID-compliant whether or not the card shows a gold star. If you carry an Enhanced License, you do not need a separate Real ID.⁴

How to Tell Which One You Already Have

A Real ID-compliant license or state ID shows a gold star in the upper-right corner of the card, either inside a circle or inside a silhouette of Michigan. No star means it is a standard credential that does not meet federal ID requirements.⁴ An Enhanced License has its own distinct design and is treated as Real ID-compliant regardless of whether a star appears on it.

What Each One Costs

The price gap is the practical decider for most people.

Adding Real ID compliance is essentially free if you time it with a renewal or replacement. Outside a renewal, converting a standard license to Real ID costs a $9 correction fee for a driver’s license or $10 for a state ID.⁴

Enhanced credentials carry their own fee schedule:

First Enhanced Driver’s License: $45
Enhanced Chauffeur License: $50
Enhanced State ID Card: $30 ($20 for residents who are blind or age 65 and older)
Enhanced License renewal: $38 (late renewal returns to $45)
Replacement: $24 for a driver’s license, $30 for a state ID

By comparison, a new adult passport book runs $145. If you cross the Canadian border regularly by car, the Enhanced License pays for itself quickly against that number.

Who Qualifies and What You Bring

Both applications require an in-person visit to a Michigan Secretary of State office. Neither can be completed entirely online.⁶

Real ID

To convert a Michigan license or ID to a Real ID, you generally bring:

Your current Michigan license or ID
Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence: a valid U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, certificate of naturalization, or, for non-citizens, a valid permanent resident card or other qualifying immigration document
A name-change document (marriage certificate, court order) only if your current legal name differs from the name on your citizenship or legal presence document

Michigan continues to issue standard, non-compliant licenses, so upgrading to Real ID is optional. Without it, you will need a passport or another accepted federal ID whenever you fly.⁴

Enhanced License

The Enhanced application is more involved because the card itself proves citizenship at the border. Under Michigan’s Enhanced Driver License Act, applicants must provide proof of full legal name, U.S. citizenship, identity, date of birth, Social Security number, and residential address.⁷

The citizenship rule is the key eligibility difference. A Real ID accepts proof of legal presence, so lawful permanent residents can obtain one. An Enhanced License is available only to U.S. citizens.⁸

For applicants under 18, a parent or legal guardian must be present and provide their own valid or recently expired driver’s license or ID as part of the identity check.⁵

If your name has changed through marriage, divorce, or a court order, update your Social Security record first. A mismatch between your birth certificate, your Social Security record, and the name you want on your license will stall either application.⁹ Bring the connecting documents that create a paper trail from your birth name to your current legal name.

Which One You Should Get

For most Michigan residents, the Real ID is the practical pick. It costs little to add, it satisfies the federal flight requirement, and the paperwork is light. If you already keep a passport for the occasional international trip, there is no strong reason to pay the Enhanced premium.

The Enhanced License earns its higher price if you regularly drive or boat across the Canadian border. At $45 for a first issuance and $38 for renewal, it is far cheaper than a passport and lives in your wallet next to your other cards. Residents of border communities like Detroit, Port Huron, or Sault Ste. Marie tend to get the most out of it. If you fly to Canada or Mexico rather than drive, the Enhanced card will not help you at the airport gate, and a passport is still the right document.

Do Not Wait If You Fly

Federal Real ID enforcement took effect on May 7, 2025. A standard Michigan license without the gold star no longer clears TSA on its own, and the same rule governs entry to federal facilities and nuclear power plants.¹⁰² Michigan licenses are valid for four years, and the Secretary of State advises allowing up to 45 days after your in-person visit for the new card to arrive by mail.¹¹³ Build that lead time into any upcoming flight.
