Michigan’s rifle hunting laws divide the state into two zones with different caliber and cartridge rules, and layer statewide requirements on top: hunter orange during firearm season, a six-round cap on semi-automatics, a 150-yard safety buffer around occupied buildings, and a flat ban on suppressors and machine guns without the specific federal license. The regular firearm deer season runs November 15–30, with early and late antlerless seasons and special hunts for youth and hunters with disabilities.1Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The Limited Firearms Zone: Southern Michigan
The Limited Firearms Zone covers roughly the southern two-thirds of the Lower Peninsula. Its boundary follows a jagged line of state highways running from the Lake Michigan shoreline eastward along M-46, then through US-131, M-57, M-66, M-52, M-47, US-10, and I-75/US-23 before reaching Saginaw Bay.2Michigan Department of Natural Resources. 2025 Deer Hunting Regulations Summary Everything south of that line falls under tighter equipment rules designed to limit bullet travel in more populated country.
In this zone during any firearm deer season, a rifle must be .35 caliber or larger and loaded with straight-walled cartridges measuring between 1.16 and 1.80 inches in case length. Necked (bottleneck) cartridges are not legal here. Other legal options include shotguns with smooth or rifled barrels, muzzleloaders, .35-caliber-or-larger pistols loaded with straight-walled cartridges (nine rounds maximum combined), and .35-caliber-or-larger air rifles powered by an external high-compression source.3Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Common straight-walled cartridges that meet the spec include the .350 Legend, .400 Legend, .450 Bushmaster, and .45-70 Government. Conservation officers routinely check cartridge dimensions in the field, so carrying the wrong ammunition is a mistake that gets caught.
North of the Zone: Northern Lower Peninsula and the U.P.
North of the boundary line, including the entire Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula, any centerfire rifle is legal for deer regardless of caliber or cartridge design. Bottleneck cartridges like the .30-06, .308 Winchester, and .270 Winchester are all in play. The same alternative firearms permitted in the south — shotguns, muzzleloaders, pistols, and air rifles — remain legal in the north.
Rimfire rifles (.22 LR, .17 HMR, and similar) are illegal for deer statewide, north or south. Whatever you carry, the rifle must be unloaded and enclosed in a case or stored in the trunk while you’re transporting it in a vehicle.4Michigan Legislature. Magazine Capacity, Suppressors, and Machine Guns
Semi-automatic rifles and semi-automatic shotguns used for deer hunting cannot hold more than six shells in the barrel and magazine combined.2Michigan Department of Natural Resources. 2025 Deer Hunting Regulations Summary If your factory magazine exceeds that, you need a reduced-capacity magazine or a plug to be legal in the field.
Michigan prohibits possessing a machine gun or a suppressor without the federal license named in the statute. A violation is a felony carrying up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $2,500, or both.5Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 750.224 – Weapons Manufacture Sale or Possession as Felony A federal NFA tax stamp alone does not satisfy the state statute, which is why hunters who legally own a suppressor under federal rules still cannot use one while hunting in Michigan.
Hunter Orange
From August 15 through April 30, any hunter taking game with a firearm during daylight shooting hours must wear hunter orange as an outer layer, visible from all sides. A cap, hat, vest, jacket, or rain gear all qualify. Camouflage patterns count if at least 50 percent of the garment is hunter orange.6Michigan Legislature. The law carves out exceptions for archery-only deer season, turkey hunting, migratory bird hunting (except woodcock), falconry, and stationary hunters targeting bobcat, coyote, or fox. During the November firearm deer season, no exception applies. Orange is one of the most commonly cited violations conservation officers write, and it’s also the easiest one to avoid.
Shooting Hours and Safety Zones
Legal shooting hours for deer run from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. The DNR publishes zone-specific sunrise and sunset tables each year in its hunting digest, and those times shift as the season moves through November.2Michigan Department of Natural Resources. 2025 Deer Hunting Regulations Summary Taking a deer outside those windows can lead to seizure of the animal and criminal charges.
Michigan’s safety zone law prohibits hunting with a firearm within 150 yards of any occupied building, house, cabin, or farm structure without written permission from the owner, renter, or occupant.7Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 324.40111 – Taking Animal From in or Upon Vehicle; Hunting Near Occupied Buildings A separate statute makes it illegal to discharge a firearm within the right-of-way of a public highway that borders posted, fenced, or farm property without the landowner’s consent. Those distance rules apply everywhere in the state, not only in the Limited Firearms Zone.
Licenses and Hunter Safety
Every hunter needs a base license before buying any deer kill tags. Deer license choices include a single deer license, a deer combo (one regular and one restricted tag), antlerless-only licenses, and extended late-season antlerless licenses.2Michigan Department of Natural Resources. 2025 Deer Hunting Regulations Summary Tags purchased online arrive by mail in seven to ten business days, and you can’t hunt until they’re in your possession.
Anyone born after January 1, 1960 must complete a hunter safety course before buying a license.8Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Rules Beyond the Rifle Itself
Two other bodies of rule catch out-of-state and first-time Michigan hunters even when their rifle is compliant. Baiting deer is banned throughout the Lower Peninsula and is allowed in the Upper Peninsula only under tight volume and dispersal limits between September 15 and January 1.10Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Penalties and the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact
Deer-specific violations, including using illegal equipment, hunting out of season, and exceeding bag limits, carry up to 90 days in jail and a mandatory fine of $200 to $1,000, plus prosecution costs. Each illegally taken deer adds a $1,000 restitution payment, and the court will revoke all hunting privileges for the rest of the year plus three more calendar years. For a general hunting violation not specific to deer, the default penalty is up to 90 days in jail or a fine of $50 to $500.12Michigan Legislature. That revocation doesn’t stop at Michigan’s border. Michigan joined the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact in 2004, and all 48 member states, including every state that borders Michigan, recognize each other’s license suspensions.13Council of State Governments.
