To complete a Michigan change of address for your driver’s license, use the Secretary of State’s online portal, mail in Form ED-109W, or visit any branch office. There is no fee, and state law requires you to do it immediately after moving. Your voter registration updates automatically with the change; your vehicle registration does not.
Changing It Online
The online portal is the fastest route and takes a few minutes. Log in through your Michigan online account and enter the new address. You’ll need your Michigan license or ID number and the last four digits of your Social Security number. If you want to update your vehicle registration in the same session, have your license plate number ready too; the system prompts you for it and lets you print updated vehicle paperwork from your browser immediately.1Michigan Department of State. Changing It by Mail
Download Form ED-109W, “Michigan Change of Address and Voter Registration,” from the Secretary of State’s website. The form asks for your name, date of birth, current and new residence addresses with county, and a separate mailing address if you use one. Getting the county right matters because it determines your voting precinct.2Michigan Secretary of State. Michigan Change of Address and Voter Registration Mail the completed form to:

Changing It at a Branch Office
Any Secretary of State branch office can process the change in person. The state estimates the visit takes about 20 minutes on average.1Michigan Department of State. Address Change This is the fallback when the online system won’t work for your account.
What You Get Back
No fee applies to the address change itself.1Michigan Department of State. Address Change What arrives in the mail depends on which credential you hold:
- Standard license or ID: a sticker with the new address, which you place on the back of your current card. The existing card remains valid with the sticker attached.
- Enhanced license or ID: a completely new card with the updated address printed on it.
MCL 257.315 confirms the state provides “a new license or a label or some other mechanism containing the new residence address” after processing.3Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.315 – Operators and Chauffeurs License Change of Address If you have a standard license and want the address printed on a fresh card rather than carrying a sticker, you can request a replacement for $9. The replacement fee for an enhanced license is $24.4Michigan Department of State. License, ID or Permit Replacement
Deadline and Penalties
The statute says you must notify the Secretary of State “immediately” after changing your residence.3Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.315 – Operators and Chauffeurs License Change of Address There’s no generous grace period written in; handling it within a few days of your move is the safe approach.
Being late is treated as a civil infraction. Reporting a false address is much more serious. A fraudulent address change is a misdemeanor carrying up to 93 days in jail, a fine of up to $1,000 for a first offense, and possible license suspension. A second offense raises the fine ceiling to $5,000 and can bring license revocation.3Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.315 – Operators and Chauffeurs License Change of Address
Don’t Forget Your Vehicle Registration
Updating your license address does not update your vehicle registration. Michigan law requires separate notification for every vehicle registered in your name, and the deadline is 10 days after moving. Missing that window is a civil infraction.5Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.228 – Notification of Old and New Addresses
The online portal is the easiest way to handle both at once. If you change your license address by mail or in person, go back and update the vehicle registration as a separate step.
Your Voter Registration Follows Along
Michigan ties voter registration to your license address. When the Secretary of State processes your license address change, your voter registration updates to match automatically, and the clerk in your new jurisdiction mails you a new voter registration card showing your polling location.6Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.307 – Application for Operators or Chauffeurs License The flip side: once your license carries the new address, your old voter registration is no longer valid.
Timing matters near an election. If you update more than 15 days before Election Day, the sync works normally. Inside the 14-day window, the online or mail method won’t update your voter registration in time; you’ll need to visit your local clerk’s office in person with proof of residency to vote using the new address.7Michigan Department of State.
