Start with the free lookup tool on the Secretary of State’s personalized plates page. It tells you instantly whether the combination you want is already assigned to another vehicle.2Michigan Department of State. Once your combination is clear, you have two ways to apply: through the Secretary of State’s online services portal, or in person at a branch office. After approval, the plate is manufactured and mailed to your registered address. Expect a few weeks, with actual timing tied to demand and the plate type you picked.
Character Limits and Which Designs Qualify
Michigan personalized plates allow up to six or seven characters, depending on the design.2Michigan Department of State. The Secretary of State offers personalization across several categories:
- Standard and commercial plates, including the common white base plate and the Mackinac Bridge design.
- Special cause fundraising plates supporting causes such as environmental conservation or organ donation.
- University fundraising plates representing Michigan’s public universities.
- Legacy plates, including the Water-Winter Wonderland design, which is limited to six characters including spaces.
- Veteran and military service plates, which are not available to order online and require a branch visit.

What You Can and Cannot Put on the Plate
State law requires every personalized plate to bear a unique combination that doesn’t duplicate any other registration plate in Michigan.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.803b – Personalized Registration Plate Beyond that, the Secretary of State reviews every submission and rejects combinations that are profane or obscene, reference illegal activity, could be read as offensive to specific groups, mimic emergency vehicle markings, or suggest a government affiliation.
Applications go through a volunteer review panel. According to the Secretary of State’s office, roughly 25 volunteers split into three groups: one screens submissions, one votes to approve or deny, and one contacts applicants whose combinations were denied to explain the decision and suggest alternatives. If your combination is rejected, you can appeal and argue for it.
What It Costs
The initial service fee is $8 for the first month of your registration period plus $2 for each additional month.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.803b – Personalized Registration Plate For a standard 12-month registration, that works out to $30 ($8 plus $2 times 11 additional months). Shorter registration periods cost less. This fee is on top of the regular registration fee, which is based on your vehicle’s value.

Each year at renewal, a flat $15 personalized plate service fee is added to your standard renewal costs.1Michigan Legislature. Renewing on Time Matters
This is where people lose combinations they’ve had for years. Michigan law lets the Secretary of State release your combination and assign it to someone else if you don’t renew before the expiration date.1Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.803b – Personalized Registration Plate The statute says your sequence “must not be given to a different person in a subsequent year unless the person to whom the plate was issued does not reapply before the expiration date.” Your combination is reserved only as long as you keep renewing on time.
There is no formal grace period in the statute. If your plate expires and someone else requests your combination before you renew, it’s gone. Set a calendar reminder or sign up for renewal notifications through the Secretary of State’s online services.
Transferring the Plate to Another Vehicle
If you sell your car or buy a new one, you can move your personalized plate to another vehicle you own. Transfers require an in-person visit to a Secretary of State office and can’t be done online or by mail.5Michigan Department of State. Plate Transfer
Bring your current registration or plate number, the title to the vehicle receiving the plate (or a copy of your title application if you recently applied), and your Michigan driver’s license or ID. The transfer fee runs between $10 and $15 depending on the registration fee for the vehicle receiving the plate. You can only transfer a plate to a vehicle you personally own. Michigan law does not allow transferring a personalized combination to a different person. If you want to give up a combination, you let the registration expire, and the sequence eventually becomes available again.
Replacing a Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Plate
A replacement personalized plate costs $5 at any Secretary of State office. Bring your vehicle registration or plate number and your driver’s license. Only the registered owner, a family member living at the same address, or someone you’ve designated through an Appointment of Agent form can request the replacement.3Michigan Department of State. If your plate was stolen, contact the police first. Law enforcement will enter an alert into the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) so officers know the plate is stolen if it turns up on another vehicle.3Michigan Department of State. Plate Order/Replacement After the police report is filed, visit a branch to get the replacement issued.
If the plate is peeling or otherwise defective rather than physically broken, take it to a branch office and ask a manager to inspect it. Manufacturing defects can qualify for a free replacement.
