Michigan Unemployment Extension: Eligibility, Payment, and Appeals

A Michigan unemployment extension can add 13 to 20 weeks of benefits after your regular 26 weeks run out, but only when the state’s Extended Benefits program is triggered by high unemployment or Congress passes a federal emergency program. As of early 2026, neither is active, so no extension is currently available to Michigan claimants.1Michigan Legislature. Extended Unemployment Insurance Benefits House Bill 4668 – 4670

What Has to Happen Before an Extension Applies

You have to use up all 26 weeks of regular benefits first. The 26-week maximum was restored by a law that took effect in April 2025 and remains in force for 2026; before that, Michigan capped regular benefits at 20 weeks.2State of Michigan. Unemployment Weekly Benefit Rate Increases Jan 1, 2026

An extension doesn’t relax any of the underlying rules. You still need to be unemployed through no fault of your own, able and available to work, and actively job hunting. The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) requires you to report at least one work search activity for every week you claim, and it can ask you to verify those activities at any time. Keep a written log with employer names, addresses, phone numbers, and dates of contact.3State of Michigan. Completing Your Work Search

One rule worth flagging because it carries over into extension weeks: any week you collect even a partial benefit counts as a full week against your total. Part-time earnings reduce your check by 50 cents for every dollar earned, and your combined benefits and earnings can’t exceed 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount. Ten weeks of partial payments burn ten weeks of eligibility, not a fraction.4Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws Section 421-27

The Extended Benefits Program

The Extended Benefits (EB) program is a joint federal-state program that switches on automatically when Michigan’s unemployment numbers reach set thresholds. There are two possible triggers.

Under the standard trigger, the state’s insured unemployment rate over a 13-week period has to reach at least 5% and also be at least 120% of the rate during the same period in the prior two years. When that happens, eligible claimants get up to 13 additional weeks.1Michigan Legislature. Extended Unemployment Insurance Benefits House Bill 4668 – 4670

Michigan also adopted an alternate trigger based on the total unemployment rate (TUR). If the TUR exceeds 6.5% and is at least 110% of the rate in the same period over the prior two years, 13 weeks become available. If the TUR exceeds 8% under the same comparison, EB can provide up to 20 weeks total.1Michigan Legislature. Extended Unemployment Insurance Benefits House Bill 4668 – 4670

Michigan’s unemployment rates are below all of these thresholds in early 2026, so EB is off. The UIA monitors the indicators continuously and notifies claimants when the program turns on. You don’t apply separately for EB; the agency identifies eligible claimants from existing claim records.

Federal Emergency Extensions

Congress can create temporary federal extension programs during severe national downturns. The most recent large example was Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC08), enacted in June 2008. It started at 13 weeks and grew to as much as 20 weeks nationwide, with additional tiers added as the recession deepened.5U.S. Department of Labor. No federal emergency program is active in 2026. Because these programs require an act of Congress, there is no way to predict them in advance. If one passes, the UIA will publish instructions on how to apply.

What to Do as Your Regular Benefits Run Out

Keep certifying on your regular two-week schedule right through the end of your 26 weeks, and keep certifying after that if you have any reason to believe an extension may activate or if you are waiting on a determination. Stopping certifications creates gaps that can delay payment later, even if eligibility is eventually confirmed.

Certification runs through the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM), the UIA’s online portal. If you can’t get online, you can certify by phone through the Michigan Automated Voice Interactive Network (MARVIN). Either way, certification is not complete until you have reported your work search activities for the period. Payments usually arrive within two to three business days after a successful certification.7State of Michigan. How to Certify for Benefits3State of Michigan. Completing Your Work Search

You may also be required to register with Michigan Works! and take part in reemployment services such as job search workshops and resume help. The UIA partners with Michigan Works! agencies statewide to deliver these services, and skipping a required appointment can stop your payments.8State of Michigan. When your regular 26 weeks are exhausted, watch your MiWAM messages and your mail. If an extension program is available, the UIA sends notice with instructions on how the transition works. You do not need to file a new claim to move from regular benefits into EB.

How Much an Extension Pays

An extension pays the same weekly amount you were receiving on your regular claim. Your weekly benefit is calculated at 4.1% of the wages in your highest-earning base-period quarter, plus $19.33 for each dependent you claim up to five. For claims filed on or after January 1, 2026, the weekly maximum is $530.4Michigan Legislature. Michigan Compiled Laws Section 421-272State of Michigan. Extended weeks are taxable the same way regular weeks are. The IRS treats all unemployment compensation, including extended benefits, as taxable income, and Michigan includes it in state taxable income as well.9Internal Revenue Service. If the UIA Says You’re Not Eligible

You can protest any UIA determination in writing within 30 days of the mail date on the notice, most easily through MiWAM. The UIA then issues a redetermination. If that still goes against you, you can appeal to the Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules within 30 days of the redetermination’s mail date; a telephone hearing before an Administrative Law Judge follows. Further appeals go to the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Commission and then to circuit court, each with its own 30-day deadline.11State of Michigan.
