Do You Need an Appointment

Documents To Bring

Standard License or ID
For a non-REAL ID card, bring documents proving identity, Social Security number, and Illinois residency. Acceptable identity documents include a U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, or consular identification document. REAL ID

- Group 1 (identity, date of birth, and lawful status): a certified birth certificate filed with a state vital statistics office, valid U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Permanent Resident Card.
- Group 2 (Social Security number): your Social Security card, a W-2 showing your full SSN, a recent pay stub with your full SSN, or an SSA-1099 form. This group only applies if you have never previously provided SSN documentation for an Illinois license or ID.
- Group 3 (residency, two documents required): a bank statement or canceled check dated within 90 days, a credit card statement within 90 days, an insurance policy, a mortgage or lease agreement, a pay stub, or official government mail showing your name and current address.

Federal enforcement of the REAL ID Act began on May 7, 2025.9Transportation Security Administration. What Happens After Your Visit
You will not walk out with your permanent card. Illinois uses central issuance: once your application is approved and any required tests are completed, you receive a temporary paper document valid for 90 days.11Illinois Secretary of State. The permanent card is printed at a secure central facility after a fraud check, then mailed to the address on file. Expect it within 15 business days. Make sure your address is accurate and your mailbox can receive standard mail. If the card has not arrived within that window, call the office at 312-793-1010.
What You Can Do Without Going In

- Driver’s license and ID renewal for eligible residents through the Safe Driver Renewal program, which waives the in-person vision screening.
- Replacement cards if your license or ID is lost or damaged.
- License plate sticker renewal and payment.

Online renewal is not available for REAL ID upgrades, first-time applicants, or anyone who needs to take a written or driving test. Those visits have to happen in person at Midlothian or another facility, and they need an appointment.
