To complete a Minnesota DMV change of address, update your record with Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) within 30 days of moving, either through your MyDVS online account, at any deputy registrar office, or by mailing a signed written request to DVS headquarters in Saint Paul.1Minnesota Office of the Revisor of Statutes. Before You Start
Have these ready no matter which method you use:
- Your Minnesota driver’s license or ID number
- Your Social Security number
- Your full new residential address, including county (county affects vehicle registration tax and determines your local deputy registrar)
- Your vehicle plate number and registration details if you also want the registration updated
If your current license is REAL ID-compliant, plan on going in person. A REAL ID address change triggers the same residency verification you went through when you first got the card, and that means bringing two physical proofs of your new address to a deputy registrar. A utility bill, bank statement, lease, or mortgage statement in your name at the new address will generally qualify.2Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Changing Your Address Online
The DVS website updates both your driver’s license or ID and your vehicle registration through a single MyDVS profile. If you don’t have an account yet, create one at the DVS site and verify your identity first. Once you’re in, enter the new residential address and confirm.2Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Online works for standard (noncompliant) and enhanced licenses. It generally will not work for REAL ID cards, because the residency documents have to be reviewed in person.
Changing Your Address at a Deputy Registrar
Deputy registrar offices operate in every Minnesota county. Walk in, provide your identifying information (and your residency documents if you hold a REAL ID), and the address is updated on the spot. Include your full name, driver’s license number, date of birth, old address, new address with county, and your signature. Mail is the slowest option and does not give you a temporary paper license, so it’s a poor choice if you need current proof of your address soon.
Vehicle Registration Is a Separate Record
Your driver’s license and vehicle registration are stored as separate records. Changing one does not change the other. You can update the registration address online through MyDVS or at any deputy registrar office.5Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Vehicle Registration The address change alone does not produce new tabs or a new title; the record is updated internally, and new documents come at your next renewal or on specific request.
Do both at once if you can. Insurers use the registration address to verify where a vehicle is garaged, and a mismatch between your policy and your registration can delay or complicate a claim.
Fees
DVS treats a license address change as a duplicate license request. The fee is $26 for any license class, and that amount covers both the state license fee and the deputy registrar’s filing fee.3Nicollet County. The $26 applies only when a new physical license or ID card is issued.
Your Temporary License and How Long the New Card Takes
An in-person change gets you a yellow paper receipt that’s valid for up to 120 days. That receipt is your legal proof of driving privileges while the permanent card is produced.
Production time depends on the type of card. As of early 2026, the DVS dashboard showed standard and enhanced cards being produced about five to nine days after the application date, with REAL ID cards running roughly two weeks behind that. What USPS Mail Forwarding Does and Doesn’t Do
Filing a change of address with the U.S. Postal Service redirects your mail. It does not notify DVS, your county election office, or any other government agency.8USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address The DVS change is a separate step.
Voter Registration Updates Automatically
Minnesota uses automatic voter registration. When you update your address with DVS, the new address is forwarded to your county election office, which updates your voter record and sends a postcard confirming your new polling place and precinct.9Minnesota Secretary of State. Commercial Driver’s License Holders
CDL holders should confirm at the time of the address change that their medical certification records are still linked correctly. Every CDL holder must keep a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate on file with DVS, which feeds the federal Commercial Driver’s License Information System.10Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. If you also need to change your medical self-certification category (interstate versus intrastate, exempt versus non-exempt), submit the Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License Medical Self-Certification Form along with the address change. If You Miss the 30-Day Deadline
Minnesota Statutes Section 171.11 requires you to apply for a duplicate license showing the new address within 30 days of the move.1Minnesota Office of the Revisor of Statutes. Minnesota Code 171.11 – Duplicate License; Change of Domicile or Name The bigger risk of missing it is what you won’t see. Notices about your driving privileges, including suspensions, hearings, and registration renewals, go to the address on file. If that address is stale you won’t get the notice, but the action still takes effect. Driving on a suspension you didn’t know about can lead to criminal charges. An outdated registration address can also give an insurer grounds to deny a claim or cancel coverage over a garaging-location mismatch.
